Nice work. By the way I don't completely agree with your synopsis of the Pitbull as I used to breed them. You are almost spot on except for the fact the pitbulls are some of the most loyal dogs in the world. That being the case they are indeed very protective. They WILL bite someone for their owner if the sense the owner truly is in danger. However they can tell the difference between maliscious intentions and someone just being a douche or sketchy. The only other reason I disagree is pitbulls have an almost nuerotic need to please their owners. It is a compulsion for your pitbull to make you happy. So if you glorify violent behavior and offer up rewards they are easily TRAINED to become aggressive however the intent is not aggression but to please the owner.
Pit bulls are some of the best dogs in the word. If you want a TRUE Pit Bull you need to get an AKC registered American Staffordshire Terrier. It is the direct and unadulterated breed of Pitbull. When pits were fighting legally and it was a governed business the breeding was very strict. ANY pit that showed human aggression was either put to sleep or castrated so as to not pass the human aggressive gene down to the following generations. The handlers had to be able to stick there hands in between the dogs while they were locked in battle without getting bit. Thedogs had to instincually know that the human hand was off limits and not to be attacked when this happened. So human aggression was bred out of the true pit bulls. Like you said most "Pits" nowadays are mixed breeds or have been bred Mother to son, or sister to brother. All of these things bringing out recessive traits which in Pits means human aggression since it was bred not to have human aggression originally.
Funny how no one remembers Petey from Our Gang or Little Rascals. He was 100% pitbull and excellent with kids even with all the distraction of filming going on. The RCA records dog is a Pitbull too. However the media has to have a dog to attack every decade. It was Dobies, then Rottwiellers now it is Pitbulls and anything that resembles one.
I disagree about the Staffordshire Terrier. LOL... Im sorry but the AKC version is a thick boned show dog. Nothing more, nothing less. Their drive is not that of a real pitbull, the GAME has been taken out of them and its all about aesthetics. Much like a lot of the UKC dogs who are cross bred. UKC dogs are CLOSER (with the exceptions of the cross bred obvious dogs who need to be registered with the American Bully Kennel CLub - ABKC )
Line breeding was and is a common practice and when those recessive traits are brought out, a responsible breeder will cull the litter. If you bred APBTs, then you would know this. Not trying to come off like an ******* but everyone can say they bred APBTs... The real breed standard is and will be with the ADBA, with over 80% of the dogs today not meeting the qualifications, but paper hanging and cross breeding and MONEY have been the culprit of that.
There really is not a true american pitbull terrier other then the ones who are bred and fought in underground rings. The original purpose of these dogs was to breed for the game, so that they would not tolerate other dogs, could bring down large game, or tough game like boars, they were never meant for the show ring. Again if you bred REAL pitbulls you would know that. ADBA is the only standard that holds true. Unfortunately UKC and ADBA are both tainted with sloppy, oversized dogs, both from breeding REAL dogs who are outside of the standard and cross breeding. The line breeding is not so much a problem as long as its line bred, and not INbred. There is still a difference. A generation must be skipped in order for the dog to be line bred. ANd the only REAL dogs that you can call game bred have to have fighting dogs in their fourth generation pedigree, as far back as the 7th and it could have anything mixed in there. I don't advocate dog fighting, nor do i participate or think it's right, but it was the only time when the real deal was being produced. You're right about a handler breeding for a dog that was not human aggressive, but only curs will show fear to a human. Protective is one thing, to bark and to enclose a trespasser is one thing, but to actually bite a human is an ill bred dog, no matter how much you think was brought on by training. A really sound dog wont break no matter how much its beaten and abused. That's where I don't agree with you. A true pitbull will not bite a person. If you do that with an AKC dog, thats fine, whatever, but youre playing with fire and youre not talking about a real american pitbull terrier.
