Texting while driving....wtf?

Why the hell do people who cannot even walk without tripping over their own feet think that they can text and drive at the same time?

This is by far one of the worse possible multi-task mistakes a person can make.

I was forced off the road by some female whom appeared to be no older than 19-20 yrs old. I caught a glance as she was jerking the wheel trying to get out of my lane and I spotted her cell phone flying to the right ... I came to a stop, went back, and she was off of the road and scrambling for her phone which had been cracked from hitting the passenger door...i asked what the hell and she says "my bad, I was on the phone".

I guess that's what she would say if she killed someone, "oops, my bad"

So I says "is that phone so important that you are willing to risk a life or both of our lives for the 30 seconds that it takes to pull into a lot or off of the road and text"?
I say "pretty screwed up that the person you are texting will only be able to view you at the wake!" She was dumbfounded.

Do people not realize that they are not super human? Is everyone out there a doctor, lawyer, MT, policeman or a CEO and they must check email/text/web every second of every day?

Sadly it is usually younger people doing it...to young to lose your life on senseless actions.

Unfortunately I've witnessed similar results over the years in my job. There have been quite a few that were the direct result of texting and driving; and yes there were fatalities that could have been avoided.

It's simple: DON'T DO IT.

It's also a fact that some cannot:

eat
talk
listen to the radio
hands-free on the phone
stay awake

etc while driving, while some can. KNow your limitations, and be honest about it.

I can knock out an important text in 5 seconds at a stop light, and still get dirty looks from people. Sorry...sometimes it is that important.

That's not awful but over in the other person's lane and swerving is something quite different, imo.

And yes, I've seen people get out of control when they let the music move them a little to much...dancing and letting the wheel go while trying to mock a music video isn't exactly a braniac move.

I'm quite a good driver, I put on more miles than most people and drive more cars in more weather conditions, but there is absolutely no way I could text while driving. Maybe if I was good at texting, but I can barely do it with full concentration. I hate texting, usually when I get a text I just call the person and get the conversation over in 30 seconds instead of spending 10 minutes to text it out.

Every new year in Illinois (as i'm sure every state) there's dozens of laws that come onto the books. Most of these laws are, well, stupid imo. this year however we had a good one, it is now illegal to text and drive. you can still talk on your cell but not through a school zone or a construction zone. i have to say, being in the most corrupt state in the nation and with our biggest city being one of the most corrupt cities in the country, i do agree with this law and do not view it as another way to make money for our state.

Here in Colorado they just past a law that made it illegal to text and drive. They have crazy commercials (though not near as graphic as the one you posted Trauma) that play all the time. One of the commercial is of a kid who is driving through a neighborhood and hits a little girl and kills her. She's laid out on the side of the road and he calls 911. The police and paramedics get there and put her in a body bag and the kid ends up losing it and the cops have to hold him back. If I remember correctly it ended up being his little sister. It definitely gets the point across.

Have I read messages while driving? Yes.
Have I sent texts while driving? Yes.
Have I sent pictures while driving? Yes.
Have I checked email while driving? Yes.
Have I replied to emails while driving? Yes.

Even worse...
Have I checked/replied to texts while on the bike? Yes, but NEVER moving or in gear.
Have I checked email while riding? Yes, but only parked.
Have I taken pics with my phone while riding? Yes.

Am I a terrible person? Eh, maybe. But I've NEVER done any of that with other cars around me, in traffic, around turns, or in any situation that I wasn't completely alone with just me, the car/bike, a guard rail or trees.

I've seen TONS of people texting while driving, and not just the "buried in your lap" texting, but the hands at 11 and 1 holding the phone in the middle texting by the windshield. I've seen a LOT of kids doing it, and I've even seen blue hairs doing it, too. Now THAT is scary...gramma and her buick with her evn3. Oy...

I'm not sure if PA has the law passed just yet, but my County has mandated that we can not even use our phones in the vehicles on the road. You have to pull off and take care of whatever business. Yeah, that happens all the time... not.

It's retarded, irresponsible, and downright stupid. If it's that important to know what Suzy Rottencrotch said about you today in Geometry class, pull your fart-can muffler-bearing Ford Escort off the dang road and get out of my way. I'm older and I have more insurance. ;) (Kathy Bates, "Fried Green Tomatoes"...don't ask.)

I do not text or read them if driving. I yell at anyone I see doing it. Hell I don't even talk on the phone if I am not using a hands free... and if my daughter is in the car, then I don't even do that.

There is nothing in life that important that you cannot stop on the next exit and make the phone call.
