some of the stupid things people say about working out

Yeah some guys would rather pretend that they can lift alot RIGHT THIS MINUTE instead of doing something that might help them ACTUALLY get stronger later down the road. When they are headstrong and arrogant, it's hard to feel sorry for them and their inevitable lack of results. It's the nice ones with no clue that make me sad cuz I feel sorry for them.

OH...I forgot to mention: The guy must have thought his back was safe because he was wearing a safety belt. What a douche. I can't even imagine what kind of back problems these people run into. I guess having an ego that can "rep" 4 plates is all worth it though.

OK OK...I just have to share this with you guys. On Friday I went to a new gym, a 24hr fitness down the street from my work and I ran into this bozo.

So, theres this Indian dude in his early 30s, 5'10 and maybe 150 wet. Walking around with his traps clenched showing his big man attitude. He's on the smith machine benching and doesn't really catch my attention till he puts on three plates on both sides. I go on with my workout, seated rows, and the next time I look over I see him put on 4 plates.

This calls for the Ipod to be stopped and for me to get in extra rest because this was something i HAD to see. So I'm sitting there with a huge grin on my face just waiting for this guy. He does some stretching and whatever to get ready for the lift. With 405lbs loaded, almost 3x his weight I'm waiting for this guy to kill himself.

So here he goes benching 405lbs at 150lbs! The anticipation grows as he gets a grip on the bar. And...it begins! His ass lifts off the bench, his legs clenched, and he gets the bar off of the lock. He proceeds to lower the bar very very very slowly, all the while his lower back 1 foot off the bench and his legs and arms shaking. He lowers the bar about 3 inches then WHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMM!!!!!! the bar slams as I'm awaiting this guy's death. I noticed he has a squat pad in the middle of the bar where it would hit his chest. So, what this guy did was put the stoppers approximately 5-6 inches above his chest. After the bar slams, he releases and pulls himself under the bar. He unloads the weight and does the same thing over again. His buddy comes over and he goes on to brag about how he's doing 405lb negatives. Needless to say I was in complete and udder shock. My mouther was gawked open and I didn't know whether to embrace the rage or the humility. Possibly the worst thing I've ever seen done in the gym.

After he's done there he moves on to free weights - incline bench where he can't bench 95lbs without having his ass 2 feet from the bench.
YOu never know though he may be spreading his workout out. Doing down one day and up the next just s he can really get all of tha exercise over a few days. :toofunny:

Wait wait wait, I got another one. Lmao. I used to go to the chat room on bb.com and this kid (i get a lot of people ask me this, but this kid) he was asking me about working out and how to get in shape. He didn't have any weights or anything and asked if he could fill up a bucket of water and use that to do curls and said "it's 10 gallons so that's like 10 pounds right?" and he asked me if he should do like 500 sit ups a day and 300 curls a day would get him big. i was like uhh no dude. so I decided to explain EVERYTHING to him and give him a crash course. about 30 minutes later, he was like "uhh so yea so curls, i do about 300 of those babies and like 400 sit ups?" I was like OMFG were u not listening to a FUC*IN thing i was saying!

These stupid kids have no idea what they are talking about and they like to look at muscle mags and they think they can work out every muscle everyday and do like 500 reps and not have any equipment.
Just to put the icing on the cake, 10 gallons of water weighs about 83lbs. I would pay to see a novice do a set of 300 curls with 83lbs, and then do it again the very next day.

I've got another one. This comes from my best friend who is not too bright. He can be a total idiotic moron sometimes. He's 20 years old, skinny as an ethoipian kid and is like 6ft 3.

He is always trying to tell me, "dont lift weights, it's going to make your penis shrink!" I have no idea why he thinks that. I asked if he's talking about steroids and he says "yeah that stuff too, but just lifting weights and being a bodybuilder makes you have a small penis." He seriously and truly believes this, because he's a moron. I told him, first of all, lifting weights will never make your penis smaller. Steroids will make your nutts shrink temporarily but will never make your penis smaller either. Although I've argued with him about this several times, he still believes weight lifting will shrink your penis. What a ****ing idiot. :fool2: :aargh:

Ok, this one happened a while ago.

First off, I'd like to preface it by saying, I normally do not talk to anyone at the gym except my wife, who is my workout partner. I especially do not give advice where none is asked for. However this one incident I felt was necessary in order to prevent imminent injury.

A skinny guy comes in with his equally skinny girlfriend. It was clear both the guy and the girl were novices. Actually from overhearing things, it was clear this was the girls very first workout with free weights.

The guy goes to the behind-the-neck station and begins doing behind the neck presses with poor form. I think, fine if he wants to blow his rotator cuff go ahead. But then he has his gf sit there and gets her to try to do them with an empty bar. It's one thing to mess yourself up, but this girl had no idea what she was getting into and unfortunately trusted her boyfriend. I don't know about you guys, but in my experience, girls who havent' trained with weights and are extremely skinny and unathletic tend not to be able to do BB Flat bench with 45 pounds, let alone behind the neck presses. It was clear this poor girl was about to snap her arms off and this kid could barely spot her.

She racked it and complained to him. He started insisting she continue. I walked over against my better judgement and told him, this really isn't an exercise for beginners, and that my girlfriend (now my wife) can't even do behind the neck presses with 45 pounds and she had been lifting for about a year (shoulders and chest are weak points for her; back and legs are strongpoints). I told the girl not to feel bad about not being able to lift it, and I suggested the hammerstrength plate loaded behind the neck press instead since you can load lighter weights and it is safer.

I felt awful about talking to them like that. I felt even worse that I kinda made the guy look like a dumbass in front of his girlfriend. But I just couldn't stand by and watch someone get seriously injured.

You didnt purposefully do it to emasculate the guy in front of his GF. He was going to get her hurt and the fact that you not only tried to prevent injury to these people, but also felt remorse for embarassing the guy, shows alot about the strenght of your character. Id feel bad too, but I think you did the right thing.

Thankfully I haven't seen anything like that happen since. I do however all the time see the typical halfreps with too much weight, etc. from all sorts of people.

I don't even see that all that often though. My gym is fairly small and it seems the vast majority of members are pretty serious about their efforts. Sadly I haven't seen those two kids since then. I have a feeling the girl got so frustrated she gave up. I'm also guessing it was just a passing phase for the guy, too.

I saw a guy the other day i THOUGHT he was like 16 but turns out he's 23 and he loaded up 3 plates a side for squats but he sets up the powerrack so when he goes down he's only doing 3/4 squats i'm talkin well above parallel. And he proceeds to grunt and grown really loud then racks the weight, walks out of the rack and high fives his buddies and yellin "YA BABY, LIGHT WEIGHT". At this point i couldn't help myself i just broke out laughing, lol. I asked his buddy why he didn't do full squats and he told me to ask him, so i did and he said they didn't feel right to him, so later on i look back and he's doing full squats now but now he can only do 205lbs.

Also another funny story, my brother and i were doing cardio and this short guy he must be like 5 foot nothing walks by and everytime he sees us he always flexes his triceps ALWAYS, sorry buddy but no one has horseshoes when relaxed. So he's walking by we just yell TRICEPS! LOL So he picks up the pace and walks by, lol.

Ya i've got alot of retards at my gym to say the least, but i just found out about this gym like 30 minutes away from me that is a private gym and it really cators to powerlifters and strongmen so i think i may start going there for a more serious lifting atmosphere. I dunno if any of you follow the worlds strongest man stuff but Hugo Gerard trains there when he's in town . I always find it a better training environment when you've got ppl that make you look like a newb, lol. They've also got the harder to find stuff like glute-ham raise, reverse hyper machine, bands, fractional plates, etc.

Friends don't let friends squat high. :squat: :D I've said it before and I'll say it again, a moderate weight parallel or ATG squat impresses me a hell of a lot more than a 400lb half squat.

I just got back from the gym and saw something I had to put on here. There was an older guy probably 35 working uot in one f the rooms in the gym that has the various cable machines. He was probably 5' 6" and maybe at most 155 lbs but he has his underarmour sleeveless shirt and he is fairly defined I will atleast give him that. I look thru the window to see if the machine wanat is free and I see just him in there doing a pretty good amout of weight on lat pulldowns and doing them correctly. Once I walk in he dropss the weight puts it up to about 2 from the full stack and begins a workout I have never seen or heard of. This is as god of a description as I can give, He had a agrip like he was giong to do curls but was pulling down while he wasa standing and each time he may have moved it 5 inches then lets the weight slam while it yanks him off the floor. I tried to contain myself but smiled a little and went to do trceps. He asks me as I am walking by if I want to work in. I almost laughed but just politely said no thank you I am doing trceps today. He then sweels out his chest sticks out his arms and walks out. I couldnt contain myself any longer and I had t start laughing my @$$ off. that was my funny story for the day I have one almost everyday becaause workout in a military gym and people come from all over the world ( I work by NATO) and have these odd ways of doing things.

Lol. I have to confess, I did a workout a year and a half or so ago in wich I did half squat's (the top half). And would work up to about 5 plates for a few reps. But I was ALSO doing BOX squat's in the same workout to work on exclusively the bottom part of the movement. I wasnt trying to look cool by doing more weight, in fact I often trained in the middle of the night when nobody was around. But believe it or not, my full squats actually jumped up pretty good when I returned to them. I could probably do a lot more than that on partial squats now, but I do them deep instead. Im 6ft 5" with my shoes on, so I've actually experienced knee pain from all this deep squating. When your as tall as me, you can either let your knee's go to far forward, or you can bend your back to far forward, or you can just not go as deep. (Or you can try to go deep without leaning forward and not letting knee's go forward in wich case you'll inevitably fall backwards.) But hey, there's certainly some perks to be had being a tall guy as well. So I wouldnt trade it in.

Okay, I got another one. My mother used to workout back in the day and go to a gym. I was talking to her today and she was telling me about how everyone at her restaurant she runs is sick. I told her, "drink protein shakes, that's why I never get sick." She looked at me, she says, "F*ck that! That Sh*t made me fat! Besides protein doesn't kill germs..." I almost wanted to slap her.

Protein makes your immune system stronger, making it harder for you to get sick.

I had a girl the other day come up to me and start talking about my arms, she then asked for advice on her arms. For some reason she asked to see my legs so I raised my shorts and showed her my thighs. She said OMG that is retard muscle and then walked away. It just made me laugh. I suppose I could just work upperbody and walk around on tooth picks.

OK who negative repped me? Was that because I mixed lockout squats and box squats in the same workout? That was a low blow man. That was a long time ago and it worked for whatever it was worth.

Negative rep points are off bro, you probably got a positive rep point from a newb on the board i thought the same thing originally. And ya i've done workouts like you mentioned where u do half squats but i'd always follow them up with box squats, infact i barely do regular squats anymore. I do front squats, box squats and hacks.

Oh I understand completely man. You've got me by almost a foot, so needless to say it would be a bit easier for me to hit depth because the distance traveled is less. If you can't squat deep without pain, then by all means don't. No sense hurting yourself. I used to box squat quite a bit, so I do have my form down to where I squat with a wide stance and try to sit back with the weight to put all of the strain on my posterior chain (PL jargon for Hams, Glutes, Hips, and lower back) instead of my knees. I feel you about the knee pain, I've had a grade II sprain of my MCL on my left leg, so I have to be careful not to tweak it anymore.

Lol. I saw a 173 on my reps instead of the previous number wich was just 174, and I thought to myself "awww man, did I get neg repped for being honest about my tainted past of half squating, what the hell man."
But it's all good. (and apparently I've been repped significantly by someone since I left for the gym.) Thanks for that guys.

Im currently doing standard back squats just a tiny bit below parellel, but now Im just recently starting to notice some knee pain. My squat form has gotten gradually deeper over the last few years as I gained balance, and neuro muscular coordination/efficiency. It's hard, and I do let my knee's go well past my toe's. It also started around the same time I began doing every exercise twice/wk. The style seems to work well for me with the exception of the knee pain. Im currently taking GH wich has helped my joints and connective tissue, but only to a certain degree. Over all quad mass, outer sweep, and hamstring size are all elements I struggle with(allthough front quads seem more responsive than vastus lateralis, and hams). I have decent strengh I guess on squat and leg press, but nothing amazing. Im working in the 10-12rep range as of recently, so I'll see if the higher rep's work better for me. If the knee's keep being a problem, I'll alternate squats w/ leg press as my main mass builder. I could just do them to slightly above parrallel. I got some results from doing them that way w/out knee pain. (being a tall guy, going to parrellel is a pretty long ROM from start to finish.)

I know going low only builds your butt more, but damn it, I want a big muscle butt. Lol. Where is it written that only women can train for a nice butt?

I find it's most amusing to make them guess how much you can bench. Granted I havne't done flat bench in years, it's always fun to hear what "massive" weight they think I can put up because it's usually a pathetically low number anyhow.

Id feel like saying. "Let's see, so your expecting someone like me who has done thousands of hours of research on the topic is actually going to be dumb enough to believe the ramblings of a clear cut know-nothing like you? Rrrrrrriiiiiiiiigggggghhhhttt."

lol, seriously the ignorance or just sheer jelousy of some people gets under my skin big time....when the average joe sees a guy whos a freaking adonis they use all that **** to help them feel better about being average...u never hear them say man that guy must bust his ass in the gym.....its just STEROIDS " Give me some steroids and i'd be just as big, if not bigger!" what a joke, insecure *******s.....funny thing is, is that its adults just as much as it is kids that pull this ****. I have had a firends dad tell me its scientifically proven that lifting heavy weights shrinks your genitals... COME THE **** ON!!!! i was like 12 and i knew it was a load.

Its also funny that he saw a bottle that said anabolic steroids pills...LOL, they think they are just one pill and they are called anabolic steroid pills..lmao.

Know it alls suck and need to go **** off somewhere......you could prove something to them with all the proof/science in the world but they still think they are right.

Its fun to know that all the myths are pretty much exactley the opposite, really almost all of them.

Everyones "Uncle" is a pro BB'er for some reason and apparently they workout 3 times a day for 7 hours and NEVER eat so they stay ripped.

How about that girl thats a nurse and knows everything about nutrition and exercise. Creatine is indeed a steroid, running builds leg muscles better than anything else, yep that hot surfer guy is 1.8% bodyfat( even though thats impossible because yuo'd be dead), nope u cant digest more than 20 grams of protein per meal, vegetarians build muscle way faster just look at cows and t-rex( who was a herbivore, but i read that that really is true), ect ect ect.
and they actually attempt to back it up with scientific knowlege...boy thats lame.

The worst is still the hardcore druggies....how hypocritcal are they! lecture people all you want on how to care for your body, like not eating meat or anything that comes from an animal because our bodies arent meant to digest it. OH im sorry, when the **** did you become the epa of ****ing health. Kidas all around me always talking about how they love to drink and get ****ed up but ask them about roids and what do you hear..." Dude those will **** you up so bad" or the drunk girl who catches her boyfriend doing a cycle " stop, dont you care about your health? Im worried about all the side effects and mostly the rage your gonna have" -MTV True Life: Im On Steroids- anyone?? But yeah drug ABUSE is fine and dandy i assume?

Supps and especially steroids are cheating! WHAAA?!?!?!?!
what if your not a professional athlete? its still cheating, taking the pussy way out! OH, the pussy way out...like the way out you took to pass high school? The way out you got that brand new ipod? the way out you got that 100$ out of a purse in the bleachers?
Do you really need alcohol to have fun? no, so i guess your cheating too.

LOL, i think im done for now......i got alot of that off my chest in my aas presentation even though the teacher forced me to do the anti-steroid approach.

Its a lovley feeling when ur reading the facts off your little notecard and you come across the one on prepubertal effects, and the first fact you read to the class is the one that says "prepubertal use of androgens causes painful increases in the size of the male sexual organ" got that from a book. If my class had a rep system....boy you can bet i'd be in the RED.....my class has never been so attentive, esp the guys..lol, i got alot of HUH's and HMM's and WTF's and ???'s outta that one.

lol, seriously the ignorance or just sheer jelousy of some people gets under my skin big time....when the average joe sees a guy whos a freaking adonis they use all that **** to help them feel better about being average...u never hear them say man that guy must bust his ass in the gym.....its just STEROIDS " Give me some steroids and i'd be just as big, if not bigger!" what a joke, insecure *******s.....funny thing is, is that its adults just as much as it is kids that pull this ****.

Presentation huh? What was it like for a speech class or something?
Thats too bad you were pressured to present it in a negative way. Not that it should be presented in a gung ho positive way either, especially since it's to high school students. But a purely unbiased clarification of what's proven fact, what is not, what is speculation or MAY have some truth to it, what's circumstancial, and what's exaggerated and what's just fiction. If it could come from an agenda-less presentation but while ackowledging that some of the risks are true, but to clarify why and under what circumsatances, and compare to the risks of more socially accepted risks like sky diving, drinking, smoking, eating a piss poor diet, and not exercising. If you could do that it would be enlightening and probably shocking to a lot of people. Problem is, it's hard to present the objective truth without being misconstrued as "pro-anabolic steroid" because the truth of the risks and circumstance in wich they become formidable and their comparison to other risky behavior is ussually so far to the left of what most people have been conditioned to believe, that theyd percieve it as "pro-steroid" instead of what a really is wich is just stating the truth, the good, the bad, and the ugly, instead of just an exaggerated version of the "bad" and the "ugly". So to speak.

Sounds like you DID try to do that though. At least as much so as you could get away with without crossing the line.
I mean preaching objectivity about AAS in speech class would be kind of like preaching that "satanists have an undesevedly bad rap". Or "Ku klux Klan" or "black Panthers" Or some other maligned group of people. It's bound to shock and awe anyone who it has never occured to that there would be someone with another side to that argument out there.
Difference is that in the case of AAS overwhelming SCIENTIFIC data contradicts conventional thought. Most of the attempts to bury the scientific facts are actually bourne of the SUBJECTIVE, or MORAL outrage that motivates people to lie about and fabricate the facts to give more "ammuntion" to their moral crusade.

Unicronspawn i believe going lower on squats activates the glutes and hamstrings more, but you need powerful glutes and hams for a good squat/deadlift. I don't think alot of guys realize that once you get into some big weights in the squat glutes come more and more into play.

Exactly right. My ass has gotten much larger from squats, lunges, and deadlifts.

I've been going just a little below the point where the quads are parrell to floor lately. It sometimes leaves me w/ sore knee's, but it seems to be effective. I dont mind activating the glutes more, I think big muscuclar glutes are a legitimate part of an asthetic physique, as well as helping on other lifts. I'ts just that the way my structure is put together, even going down to parrallel is difficult, and going even deeper (lately I've been going just an inch or two below) seems to be the point at wich I get sore knee's. If I could get away w/ squating so deep my butt left a dent in the floor I would, you know. Because IMO a 6ft 5" guy can never really have too much mass. Especially in the appendages. But unfortunately Im just not seeing how going much deeper than I allready am could be practical for me being this height. I've known powerlifters that were only a couple inches shorter than me that were excellent squaters, but they had to kind of adjust their form to suit their structure. IE: wider than average stance (remember this is for PL'ing not BB'ing) and a bit more forward lean, and even then the knee's seem to come just slightly further out than what's considered optimal.
It's tough, but like a said before, their are some good things about being taller than average too, so it sort of balances out to a degree.
Every individual has certain skills that develope easier than other skills when they work on them. One thing might take some hard work, but the results just come when the work is put it, and another skill the same person might spend years litterally knocking themselves out trying to master, and still not be where they want to be. So you either persevere indefinately in hopes of improvement, or you say to hell with it.

I guess it's sort of the balance of the cosmos or something. Some people are born with physical or mental disabilities, but might for instance have a will and perseverance that superscedes that of most people.

Anybody that will stop you in the middle of a set, and tells you the correct way to do something, or a different exercise that works better.

My chest dont ever grow, so i just do shoulder presses. Or i dont bench because it is too hard.

The worst is the 350 pound guy that walks around like hes the ****z and never does anything but calf raises or leg presses.

ACE, You hit the nail on the ****ing head!

i tried to do it about legalization in profesional sports and safe usage but my teacher straight up told me that i would find ZERO research on that because it is false and that there is no such thing as safe usage.

it kinda pissed me off but i skirted the line of pro-steroid in my paper and in my presentaion. All the side effects i said that they cause was followed by a " but this is not permanent and will go away with time" or " supplementation can reverse/stop/aid in recovery of this ailment" ect ect.

yeah i didnt want to give teens any ideas so i tapped into all the complications that could go wrong in a developing person and usually referred to saftey as "in a healthy adult male"

Well thats good that you did that.
Still, I dont know why she said youd find zero research to support safe use, because that would imply that she's looked to try to find it. If she did look she didnt look very hard. Im preaching to the choir on this one but most of us know about that study in wich the highest testosterone doses ever used in humans in a peer reviewed research study that found that healthy adult male's w/ 600mg's a wk of testosterone had only mild transitory side effects like acne.
I think alot of people (including some teachers and doctors) have heard the same tired rhetoric so many times that they tend to just ASSUME that the scientific evidence establishing the health risks of any and all AAS use must be tremendous, and never take the time to look and see if it really is. But "The only thing wrong with that is that it aint so."

AGREED

In the end people are going to believe what they want to believe no matter what, especially if it makes tham feel better about themselves for not looking like 'that'.

AAS will always be frowned upon and i doubt that will ever change, which really is a sad thing.

I guarentee that if all the older folks *****ing about them knew the truth, they would all be on HRT.

Alot of people have died of conditions that could have been succesfully treated w/ AAS because the exaggeration and propaganda had people afraid to use them even though the patient was going to die if they didnt.
Imagine how many AIDS and cancer patients could have lived decades longer if the stigma of AAS hadnt made the research drag it's feet for so long. All so some boneheads can pretend there's a more level playing field in pro sports by teaching everyone to be technology fearing luddites.

Lol. I bet if you told them that Gene Rychlak has benched over 1,000lbs theyd be like :wtf: :jaw:
People have yet to learn that 200 is not some extensive milestone that can only be reached by the elites. My ex-girlfriend was talking with this guy who lifts weights a lot (but is a moron). He actually told her that it is impossible to bench 225 without the use of steroids. I guess with his rationale, that means every high school football team since even before the creation of 1-testosterone has had at least one juicer playing for them.

Thats pretty boneheaded. Lol
Everyone knows that 250 is the plateu unatainable w/ out AAS.
Lol! JK.

No, but that's a pretty broad and general thing to say. He probably just wanted to not seem inadequate for not being able to bench very much cuz he didnt want your ex to think he was a wuss. So, instead now she probab:fart: ly just thinks he's a dumbass.

hes actually right, i have been working out on and off for about 10 years now and before i decided to jump into the steriod game i couldnt never break 225, i would get up to 223, 224, 224.3, 224.8... 224.9 and stayed there for about 6 years.. then one day i decided to lick up some test on my tongue, went right to the gym and BOOM 225, 230, 255. Im now benching 680 and still goin up, thank god for steriods..............

I too, remember way back when, all I wanted to do was put up a bar with 2 plates on each side (225lbs). It was rough, but I just put it on, got a spotter, and pressed one rep with a little help. 2 days later, tried it again. did this twich a week, and at the end of my second week could get 4, and a forced 5th.
225 is impressive for a natural, the funny thing is, my bench has not really gone up at all though. I mean, I hit a little (and god do I mean a little,..) anabolics, and next thing, I was at 315lbs on bench.
My deal is my chest is If I do it as much as everything else, it will freaking blow up, and throw everything else outta proportion.
Hell, right now I only bench 230 x6 on flat bench. But I usually bench using the smith machine, and there I can hit 270ish. So, I usually train chest like once a week, and really only do a "on par" workout every other week

OH- my first little blue mark on my rep points! :woohoo:

There's this idiot at my gym. He's pretty big, but he's obnoxious, and he walks around with a big towel draped over his shoulders like it's a frickin cape. He also walks around with his arms held way out to the side like hit lats are 10 feet wide.

Anyway, there's a lot I could say about him, but the other day, I hear him say "Yeah, I always use as heavy a weight as possible so nobody tries to work in."

I used to wear a towel like it was a cape every day and pretend I was a superhero...............(in the second grade that is.):D
