Well, I have been researching my tush off since I last made the above post... and it has been a whirlwind of revelation.DHB is my meat and potatoes...
Also, don't worry about not having the exact answer, it'll give me something to research!
Here is an excerpt:
It appears as though everything I have read points to the active constituent WITHIN Grapefruit as the flavonoid Naringin; so I will modify my usage and switch over to supplements containing that specific active, in order to enhance the bio-availability of orally consumed supplements. As I am on no medications of any type, I don't have to worry about interactions - so I am able to enjoy all the positive effects of reaping a heightened effect from my supplements at even lower dosages (in which the in-vio activity or half life is also extended, according to my studying thus far). The flavonoid existing in highest concentration in grapefruit juice is naringin, which in humans is metabolised to naringenin. Other flavonoids exist in grapefruit juice in lower concentrations as well. Orange juice does not contain naringin in as high a concentration, instead containing hesperetin. It is sometimes recommended as a substitute. Juice of limes and Seville oranges can also inhibit drug metabolism, however, as can apple juice with some drugs.
Case in point: With an oral supplement that is highly touted and for good reason because of it's successful implementation into naturally based anabolic protocols, such as EcdyMorph/True Turk, whose cost may be somewhat prohibitive, an athlete should consider stacking either/or DHB (also known as Bergamottin, or 6’,7’-dihydroxybergamottin - IS ALSO IN GRAPEFRUIT JUICE) and Naringin to augment the overall hypertrophic capacity and duration of each serving!
So it seems Grapefruit juice is the ultimate anabolic potentiator... when, of course, stacked with ergogenic supplements. Containing a yield of BOTH Naringin and DHB, a one-two punch of increased availability it realized.
Questions for further research:
- How much of each compound is contained within ONE peeled whole-grapefruit
- What are the dosages needed of each to elicit an up-regulation of bio-availability with orally ingested nutraceuticals/supplements/steroids, and can this be gotten from pure Grapefruit juice or whole-fruit consumption on a daily basis?
- Do any Grapefruit juice/fruit extracts exist in powdered/encapsulated form that contain BOTH actives of DHB/Naringin in unison (could this be realized in a basic whole-fruit encapsulated version of Grapefruit, or a standardized extract - EVEN IF NOT listed directly on the label)?
PS: I know this has been exhaustively discussed over and over again since its inception in 1989... but I am not specifically discussing its usage with medications, steroids, etc... only natural organic supplements.
