Volcom's Androlean & Androhard Log

Random cool info, but probably only cool to Anton and Rodja. My friend trains at Machado Jiu Jitsu and Blackhouse came in to work with them, so my friend got to observe Jose Aldo, Anderson Silva and I'm not sure if he mentioned JDS, but no Lyoto Machida. According to my friend, he said the myth that Jose's jiu jitsu is actually stronger then his striking is true. He was thoroughly impressed when he observed Jose rolling.

Crazy thing is that Aldo has been quite injured in his last 2 fights (Urijah and Manny) and he still dominated. I'm assuming it was no-gi as a gi throws everything off.

Machida has been training at AKA again the last few weeks for Couture.

Cardio is going great. I feel rejuvenated after a stint of being a bit burnt out and mentally deflated, but all is good now. Also, my transformation contest has ended. I'll share my results. However, these are not my pre/post AH/AL pics. I suppose these could be counted as 3/4ths of the way progress pics relative to AH/AL.

Sam, wow man, you cut up and added some serious definition. I hope my pics are that drastic!!!!

Hey volcom. Good job on your progress. I am curious as too why you train a BB type split while cutting. I see you have your CSCS, and I would have thought you would do say 2 day full body split interval type work, then 2 days of more hypertrophy (say chest and back with light legs and shoulders and arms). You can add your power and compound type lifts in any of the days too. I don't know, or even a more NSCA type program.

Also, are you a strength coach, personal trainer? Thanks.

I considered something more full body throughout the week during my cut, but I have workout partners that I consider and for the most part, they didn't want a full body split routine and their company and the actual fun we have lifting together outweighs a lot of things for me. Also, I lift in a fashion that I find the most enjoyable, which could result in my progress going in a direction more so like a flash light then a focused laser, ie.. very strength specific, hypertrophy specific or power specific.... My training style could be and could have been more specific, I could perform my lifts in the most optimal way I understand, which would be relative to my 1RM, but I'm not lifting for sport's performance, so I don't care to be so technical. Ultimately, I decided to let the diet and cardio do most of the fat cutting work.

I do some S&C for high school athletes at a private training facility, although times have been tough economically, so I only get the occasional athlete where the school will actually fund their off season S&C training. I was doing some personal training for well to do adult, but their rise & shine AM schedule wasn't worth it to me. My main bread & butter is that I'm a paralegal at a civil law firm, though the majority of my university trained knowledge is in the field of kinesiology, with a quasi-minor in gerokinesiology.

You're going to look pretty impressive yourself, with all the work and diet efforts in put in bro

Great job bud! Definitely leaned out, and retained LBM.

Awesome progress! Very impressive.

x2-incredible difference.:wow:

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliments. My pre AH/AL pictures are somewhere between those initial shots and final pictures. I'm really hoping I'll be able to make enough progress before the end of this stack to look notably improved on these final shots. That'd be awesome.

Although I have to note, in comparing all my pictures, the most pronounced difference occurred from 205 down to 200 (the duration of my AH/AL run), then my drop from 220 down to 205.

Looking beastly Bolo take it easy on JCVD. Remember he is supposed to win

Whatever Tom, I beat him down in my sleep. It's Steven Segal that never loses, even with a gut and being overweight!

I miss a week and i have to schedule a hour just to read all the updates in your log. LOL thing are looking good. I bet you'll have no problems hitting your goals.

Might need to put the dog down soon. My dog, Spencer is 15 years old and had stopped eating the last couple days, so I'm taking him to the vet at 3:30pm today. If the poor guy is suffering then I'd rather put him out of his misery then prolong his life for my sake. I'm not sure if he'll need to be put down today, unless there's a nasty diagnosis, but for sure he's going soon. June at the latest I'm guessing, if not tonight.

I may or may not get a full workout in tonight, but I'll at least do my cardio.

that sucks. my dogs are 10,10 + 11 so i'll likely have issues with all 3 around the same time

My dog didn't really show any real signs of aging until he turned 13 or 14, when the arthritis kicked in. His health didn't seem to be a dire issue, until a couple days ago, when he started deteriorating really fast. He was a relatively healthy old dog, still ran on flat ground, had troubles with stairs due to this arthritis, but still looked like a happy, healthy dog. Whatever is up with him right now has occured pretty aggressively.

All 3 of mine are Shiba Inus, so a pretty long lived breed in general but it does really suck with them all being around the same age that as they hit 15-17 is likely when all 3 will go. So far other than some grey hairs theres not any real signs of aging on them either.

Just the thought of me losing any of my dogs brings a tear to my eye. I took my little girl in to get spayed and I was seriously a nervous wreck all night even though it's a routine surgery. My oldest one is creeping up in 7 and is starting to get really gray around the nose and isn't as mobile as he once was. The day I lose him will be one of the saddest days of my life.

Just lost mine at 14 years old.. it was a Pug so it had a long life for that breed.

Sorry to hear this Sam, a sick pet is like a sick family member or friend, never is an easy prospect to deal with.

For sure dogs become part of the family. I'm big on animals in general, so I particularly adore my own. The verdict is not out yet, as to whether it's time to put my dog down. We took him to the Vet, he got an ultrasound to check for tumors and the vet gave him a senior exam. Spencer's not in great shape, but the vet gave us three different medications, one being some kind of steroid and if he doesn't drastically improve then he'll have to go.

Spencer used to hop in & out of cars like nothing when we took him places. Yesterday, he could only get his front paws into the car and I had to hoist his hind legs in. When he took a pee outside the vet's office yesterday, he didn't even lift his leg (he's a boy) and at this point & time, he has a REALLY hard time getting to his feet on his own. Being that the vet's office was tile, he couldn't stand on his own, I had to lift him by the rear to get him to all fours. The vet says he's doesn't appear to be in any kind of serious pain, just the general discomforts of being a 15 year old dog.

It's funny, my mom suggested giving him a going away party when his time comes to get put down, celebrtating his long, spoiled life.

I've accompanied my ex girlfriend in high school when she had to put down her dog. It's a peaceful passing, but it is a sad effing sight to watch a dog fade into death. Spencer lived a long life and I'd rather have him go in peace then prolong his misery if he doesn't get better. I think the designated amount of time to see if his medications are helping is about 3 weeks, so we'll see.

After the Vets I went to the gym for cardio only.

20min Treadmill Jog
20min Stairclimber.

Finally broke 200lbs this morning. I was 199.5lbs. My weight loss came to a screeching hault for a good 2.5 weeks and now it's started to drop again.

the part i'll have the biggest problem with if I have to do it with my male dog is that he totally utterly hates going to the vets, for a 21lb dog it takes 3 people to hold him down for an injection.... So for him it won't really be a peaceful end and i'm not sure I can deal with that.

It's so funny that dogs and cats pick up on the Vet's Office vibe. They're like little kids at the dentists and I'm not sure how they know. Our vet says that animals shed hair like crazy while they're there due to the stress and there was this puppy there (with no tail), but was walking around with his behind tucked down and his head held low like he was afraid and depressed.

I was sitting next to an older genetlement who owned 3 dogs and you can tell his dogs meant the world to him. He said two of his dogs had some anterior cruciate tears and the two surgeries cost him $7,000.00 and there was no regret in his voice about having to spend that kind of money. It was very matter of fact and a given he'd dish out the money to take care of them. I was really impressed by that. It was his new puppy that was walking around scared, with his (non)tail between his legs due to being at the vets.

Agree guys, they really are family...

Sorry to hear, as the others said, my dog is my companion, I couldn't imagine.

awww man, nothing like a guy and his dog. only movie to ever make me cry....."My Dog Skip"

I'm with all of you on dogs become family. Spencer is in a lot of our family portraits, including official ones like Christmas cards that we send out.

Well I made the horrible mistake of walking my dog before I went to the gym. It was a depressing experience that actually got me teary eyed because his overt slowness and weakness is really starting to solidify the ugly fact that he is in his final days.

I got Spencer when I was in high school and during today's walk I got nostalgic and started to feel like I could have treated him better in his earlier years. Of course I loved him and he was treated well, but I went through some dumb adolescent girl drama back in those high school days and in those teenage bouts of girl induced depression, Spencer would be left largely ignored by me because I was too involved in my own head, but Spencer had a good latter stage of life.

I went into the gym totally depressed, I mean totally depressed. My apathy level was off the charts about being there, so this was one of those moments where having a workout partner really helped to get through the workout, regardless of how $hitty I felt. I still feel generally $hitty, but it is what it is.

Hang Clean and Press
135lbs x 5/x 5
145lbs x 5/x 5
155lbs x 3/x 3
155lbs x 4/x 3

Behind The Neck Military Press
135lbs x 10 reps
145lbs x 10 reps
155lbs x 8 reps
165lbs x 6 reps

Db Lateral Raises
30lbs Db's x 10 reps
35lbs Db's x 10 reps
40lbs Db's x 8 reps

Rodja's suggested, "Seated Db Cleans" a la DeFranco's version
25lbs db's x 10 reps
25lbs db's x 10 reps
25lbs db's x 10 reps

Cable Lateral Raises x 4 sets

Cardio: 20 min run

I really liked the seated Db cleans, those will be keepers. I kept the weight light this time since it was my first time doing them and I wanted to keep the reps on the higher end to start off with. The controlled eccentrics on this movement is the real killer.

The AH/AL is holding up in the strength department. I'm still loving the profuse sweating AL provides and I'm really striving in these latter days of the stack to give it all I can on the fat burn tip.

I tried doing those seated db cleans without weights and there is a point in the ROM where its painful as crap for my right shoulder, which isn't a good sign

I could see how that would happen. Is it just the ROM of the Db Cleans for you? Or does your right shoulder hurt in any other shoulder lifts? My workout partner is currently having problems with pressing movements, but everything else he can do, including the seated db cleans.

Most presses too. I can't do barbell presses at all from the pain, but oddly can manage them on a smith ok. But even there I have to cautiously place my elbows at the right angle to avoid pain. I probably need to go see an orthopedist. But its kind of interesting, even doing say a hammer machine press with 230 pounds although it hurts at a certain point only hurts a little, but with nothing in my hands that db clean motion has me at worse pain than getting a tooth drilled without novacain. Crazy. My general pressing pain does get less when I remember to do Dante's broomstick stretches consistently for any amount of time, but I constantly forget

Damn, injuries suck. I struggle with my lumbar area, but luckily, my shoulders have never given me problems.

This Saturday is when we're putting Spencer down. We're just waiting for my younger brother to get back in town from College so he'll be surrounded by the family when he goes. I'm petitioning to have Spencer put down ASAP because I think he's in misery at this point, but my mom really wants my younger brother to be around when he goes.

This is my first dog, so it's my first losing of a pet experience and goddang, it's emotionally taxing. I don't grieve over real people like this.

I left work in the middle of the day to check up on him. He's not eating and he's only drinking water. For the first time ever in his life, he actually wouldnt' let me put the walker collar around him. He kept turning his head away and he really just wants to lay there and be left alone.

That's so sad. I think the reason you don't grieve over people the same way is that you know that people understand what is happening, but animals don't.

Today was the worst. He was laying in the bathroom and usually when I walk into his sight, even if he's just laying there very sloth like, he'll at least start wagging his tail. Today, when I went into the bathroom where he was laying and got close to him, he turned his head, like how dogs do when they turn down something to eat or find something unpleasant. He seemed to really want to be left alone, which I knew was really bad sign. He didn't want to go for a walk, he heard his leash and didn't budge and you know how dog's recognize the sound of their leash and usually go nuts. Not only did he not react to the sound of his leash, he then turned his head away and didn't want the leash on him because he obviously didn't feel up to walking, so of course I didn't force it. I tried two or three times to bring the leash around and he didn't want it either time. It really seemed like he was waiting for death.

He didn't want to walk and he seemed perturbed by my company. Two things that are the complete antithesis of his personality, poor guy.

I just did cardio today, I'm having an especially hard time lifting. As sad as I'll be when Spencer goes, I'll also be relieved that he's no longer in his current condition.

30 min jog
20 min stairclimber

Yes it does sound like it's his time, Dog's like to be alone when they go. This is why I can't convince my wife to get another Dog, she just can't go through it again she says.
