Question for American beer drinkers

Hey fellas, a bit of a question for you guys.

I don't really know anyone American so its mostly based on movies, tv, docos etc (from Aus).

Americans all seem like they're into the macho culture. Your movies are brudally violent, and even the action figures are massive. Guns are massive, big emphasis on the military etc. All pretty cool (atleast in movies)

Lets not forget the muscle cars, boxing, cage fighting, wrestling, NFL etc. Yeah a lot of cultures are like that, Australia's pretty into its rugby, car racing etc.

BUT

Why is it that in movies, ads and tv shows heaps of you guys drink light beer?! In aus if someone orders a light beer he'll get tampons thrown at him.

I don't mind a beer that goes down easy, but it seems like as soon as a beer is not full strength/flavour then its considered not manly enough (unless you're the designated driver I guess).

Just curious as to why theres that strange duality :D

Welcome to use this thread to ask about other american things you've seen in movies.

Oh, do rednecks really exist like the ones (usually) in those 'deep south horror movies)?

haha, thanks fellas :D

Kinda of odd, but usually, most movies will have just a can/bottle that says "beer" on the side due to infringement rights. I remember also that all the buzz was for light beer around 1994 because it was supposed to be a "safer" beer.
As for me, when I did drink, about 10 years ago, full strength beer was awful. To answer the questions about the "redneck" (as you put it) deal, you need to visit Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, or any other "bible" belt state. It's more of a lifestyle or stigma.(i've lived in all 3)

I think that with all of the negative images associated with drinking too much beer in US culture, such as the beer belly, and the nation's rampant obesity epidemic, the beer makers are trying to appeal to a wider audience, such as the guys who worry about having beer bellies. I do agree that it seemed when I was a kid, nobody drank light beer; the women mainly drank those gawdawful Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers!

As far as rednecks go....yes they exist, down south and even here in New England. Go into the "Northeast Kingdom" in Vermont and you'll see families that don't have a full set of teeth among them! And don't do too much sight seeing off the beaten path in the wintertime, or you'll find out what lonely farmers do when there are no women around...

Unfortunately the American beer industry is tainted with crap fizzy yellow beer. I would much rather piss in a bottle and drink that rather than a bud light/miller/natural/insert **** beer here. I personally only drink local craft beers, and enjoy a stonger pale ale. I even enjoy a thick hefeweizen at times. I personally DESPISE the iconic American brew.

I think its funny that you sheep ****ers carry around tampons to throw at people :D

I have to admit that i've come to like bud light lime as its a nice "with mild food" beer, or a decent chaser for tequila. Outside of that i never pick a light beer on purpose. lately been drinking Dixie's Blackened Voodoo Lager again, outside of that been drinking a lot of both Kona Brewery's Fire Rock Pale Ale and Wailua Wheat Ale

Personally I just drink mostly American microbrewed beers some of which I would put up against any beer in the world.

Samuel Adams is about the only beer that is mass marketed that is actually good.

Personally I find a persons preference in alcohol a poor judgment of manliness. In fact I know a few guys who only sip wine, or winecoolers, who would beat the hell out of most people on this board in a fight(possibly excluding military members).

Now I am all for being rough and rowdy. Tuesday I bruised my left palm, blistered my right hand, and took skin off my left leg, as well as possibly cracking the shinbone a bit which is swollen. If I sat down with a light beer, who the hell is anyone to judge my manliness? In fact when I did drink my favorite thing to do was enjoy a zima or bacardi on a porch watching the rain.

Then again my ultimate favorite drink was Tequila :laugh2: magic stuff, and I have had my time with jaegar bombs.

I dont touch the stuff no more, clean system. Only think I give into is Dr. Pepper every now and then lol

Look at the American general population of guys. 40% are fat , or skinny as pure bones because they are gamers. 40% are tools, guys who think they are hard, but usually have an IQ of 50, and could only serve in a sense of being hardcore, by being the person getting their arse kicked,or the ones getting shot.

the other 20% Are usually people who have seen the crap, made their mistakes, and wizened up a little bit while still being men. Aint nothing "hardcore" or manly about stupidity, though America advocates that.

All our movies are action packed, and full of man-ness, because its something the general population will never see or doesn't have a clue about.

i think alot of the light beer has to do with crowds i know alot of colledge parties for what ever reason all have tons of light beer as well as budlight kegs so mabey pricing

rednecks are real and they r in every state in america like cowboy rednecks that still ride horsese and bulls have huge dips in and there wallet can easley be take due to its incredable size i guess u would call them country dress nicer than a red neck when out but have all the same qualities (family is mostley red necks) loud anoying doesnt use toothbrush would die for dale earnheart u know the sterotypes there true

Just sit and ponder this for a while and the answer should come to you.

Nothin wrong with a light beer anywho. Anyone who can drink 15 lights in one sitting is just as manly as a bloke who can put away a 6er of Guinness. Just don't be seen with a fukkin Zima in your hand or you deserve to have your ***goty head kicked in.

Oh yeah, they make movies actioned packed because there are more people that like actioned packed movies. An audience equals money.
You can usually drag a lady to see some Fight Club flick but you are going to have a struggle dragging a man to see The Lake House ....

You seen fireproof, amazing movie.

I vote Newcastle. Also, I don't carry tampons around to throw at people. Problem may be that movies are made by the homos in Hollywood and I'm guessing the manliest men they can come up with outside the military bases in southern Cal is the frat boy douchebag. They like Natty light.

When I first saw it, I wanted to "choke out" his wife. I couldn't believe how they made it seem like he was the only one with the "problems". But it was a good movie. My wife and I picked up the book. If your married, you should try it out. Its worth it IMO.

Light beers just go down easier . Drinking multiple beers such as Guiness or anything comparable is like drinking a loaf of bread . "Rednecks" are in every state/city imaginable as I think someone already stated . Some would argue that Aussies are just Brits with redneck accents that pray to be mistaken for Kiwis .

No, I am not really much for movies. I might check it out to see what it is about. If it's on the level of PS. I love you, then forgot it.

I'm surprised that noone else stated this....some brewing companies use it as marketing. They get paid, or they pay to have the beer in the movie. On American TV, you will see 10 TV commercials for a light beer before you see one for a "normal" beer. Now why that is I don't know. It would be interesting to find out exactly why Light beers are marketed so heavily compared to their better tasting counterparts. I personally can't stand Miller Lite, or Coors Light....Bud Light, however, is drinkable. Even in college I would opt out of buying light beer if I had a few extra dollars to throw towards a case. It NEVER appealed to me. I remember the first time I EVER drank Miller Lite. My roommate and I split a case, by the time the case was gone we just looked at eachother and were like "What the hell?". We BARELY had a buzz....after 12 beers a piece. Give me a beer I can taste and enjoy...my chugging days are behind me lol.

The only beer I can drink is Widmer Brothers, Hefeweizen. Otherwise it's red Italian wine for me. Thankyouverymuch.

Uhh I have lived in Tennessee my whole life, in a town called Soddy Daisy.. So its about as ****ing redneck and you can get it.. I was just wondering this myself when I was looking for some Blue Moon for myself and seen the regular budweiser. Its just kinda bred into people I guess.. Everyone drinks them so when your young and get older that just what people drink.. After I was introduced to some fat tire and blue moon, I have never went back though.

Not sure why light beer has caught on. Perhaps because people can drink more of it throughout the night and get last drunk? I hope it's not for any caloric reasons because the same thing that gives beer it's alcohol, the malt, is also where the calories are. So you reduce the calories, and the alcohol percentage. So if you just drank less of regular beer, you would feel the same effects, with the same calories, and better taste. I'm sure beer producers love it though. They can put out cheaper beer for the same price and people drink it up.

Sadly, Americans don't know what good beer is. They have been taught that cold beer is better than warm, light is better than a full bodied beer and drink beer that is basically water. I learned how to brew GOOD beer back in the early 90's. I also learned what ingredients went into a good beer. I like a good hoppy Indian Pale Ale. Most guys would never touch it. I like the different varieties of hops that go into a hoppy beer. Also, you can get into a good porter. But again, any beer that is dark or black, is not beer here. One of my all time favorites is an Ocktoberfest!

In wine there is wisdom,

in beer there is strength,

in water there is bacteria,

you decide...

MMmmmm... I love a good IPA.

Not a fan of anything but a cold beer... even after 5 years in Germany/Europe... cannot get on board with anything below cold. Then again... in Germany they always served it cold anyway.

There is a huge dichotomy in America. There is a contingent that likes the 140 lb manorexic look, but there is also a contingent that likes someone that can actually move something heavier than a hairbrush. There is still such an emphasis on body size and value in this country, which is why there are many more ads for light beers as opposed to their full-flavored counterparts.

I'm all over the map with my beer selection; sometimes I'll stick to hefeweizens, sometimes it's Miller High Life. It really just depends on funds and my mood.

Once I was stationed in Germany and was normailized to their thick, stout beers, as well as their stronger coffee, coming back to the States was ill-sereal and made me become very picky with my selection in said enjoyables. I will say, though, the local brew here is awesome! If any of you are ever in Benning/Columbus area, let me know and I will take you to Cannon's Brew Pup and get a Spec-Op Dark... mmmmmmmmm! Also, the IRONCLAD is rumored to be the best! ;) I wonder who formulated it?
This is where it is at!

I would rather be mistaken for a brit then a kiwi. God damn i hate their accent.

haha the boomerang could very well be used in a spot, it would be awesome.

Truth is that most boomerangs you see are just shaped pieces of wood, however originally they were made so that they would fly back to you (more or less). I believe it was used for hunting. It saves you throwing it out and then having to walk for 2 hours in rugged Australian outback to retrieve your weapon. You can buy boomerangs that still fly back, but most of the souvenir ones will just fly straight. I remember some kid had one in school and we chucked it around, it was pretty sweet. Fricken scary to see it flying back at you spinning like crazy. They're pretty solid as well.

Thanks for all the answers. But i guess no one really knows why its marketed more heavily than better beers. I guess the majority of people drink beer to get hammered, which is hard to do when you're drinking a nice, full flavoured beer.

Also, we don't shag sheep. That's the New Zealanders :p

The more hops, the better. Love me some IPA!

O(c/k)toberfest beers have always been among my favorite as well. Good ol' Mr. Sam Adams makes a damn fine one. Growing up in New England, i don't think the "Light Beer/Piss Water" stigma was anywhere near as prominent (Microbrews are everywhere up there: Sam Adams, Magic Hat, Longtrail, RedHook, Harpoon); especially in comparison to here in florida. They consider "Corona Light" a good beer down here. :laugh2:.....BARF!

I think the light beer things is just pricing. I drink a lot of PBR and bud light, simply because I am just out of college and can't afford to drink my favorite beers to get drunk. I will, however, drink Delirium and some stone brewery stuff if I have the money. Plus, I would rather enjoy good beer than what I regularly do, which is chug a few beers in a go if it's cheap ****.

There is also a brewery in Richmond called Legends. They make some great dark beers and are reasonable priced because they brew it right here in VA.

I had substance abuse issues, so I avoid drinking - but man, I love Grolsch when I do drink. Alexander Keith's also makes great pale and blonde ales. Canadians tend to like Pilseners, which I find are disgusting - those and dark[er] lagers. Canada has a decent selection of lager/ales.

yeah guys are big enough to have so many microbrews. That happens a lot less in Australia. While our beers are full strength, many of them end up tasting like piss anyway. So it's american light piss or australian full piss :-(

I generally drink the very low carb ones if i'm drinking at home. I prefer Pure Blonde, I think its the best blonde beer in Aus. Otherwise i'll get whatever is decent and on special. Beez Neez is very good if you guys every get a chance to try it. Probably one of the best mass produced aus beers!

Come move to Colorado my friend,it is like the Napa Valley of beer. I lost track of how many Micro-breweries there are in this state.

no, the pacific northwest primarily oregon + washington are even crazier than colorado. microbreweries and microwineries, plus even a fair bit of microdistilleries.

Boulder Beer's "Hazed and Infused" is quite possibly one of my favorite beers. Great "hoppy" taste.

Honestly, beer snobs amuse me just as much as those who refuse to drink anything but a domestic american beer (like Bud, Miller, Coors, etc.).

As an American who really didn't develop a taste for beer until about 4 years ago, here's my reason for drinking what beer I drink.

When out at a bar/pub/club, it mainly depends on how much I'm willing to spend that night. Most of the "better" beers like Newcastle, Stella Artois, Guinness, etc cost more than a Bud Light, and Corona sits somewhere between them all. I'll gladly take a Bud Light or Bud Light Lime (a good sub for corona) but I will hardly go near a Miller Light (which I find disgusting and a chore to finisha a bottle of), and would prefer not to drink coors.

I find Bud Light to be much more drinkable than Budweiser, which I find to be a chore to drink also, and with a light beer you can drink more without getting that full feeling so fast. I'd much rather drink a pabst blue ribbon over Budweiser.

Yuengling is probably one of the best American beers (supposedly it's the oldest brewery here, according to what it says on the bottle) and you can get a 6 pack of bottles for under $6. Weirdly, the name "Yuengling" throws some people here off, and they assume that it's an imported beer. One bartender tried to charge me $3 instead of the normal $2 for a bottle of the stuff, and I had to get the manager to explain to her that it was a freakin domestic beer.

So yeah... over here I think it comes to cost mainly. It's not out of the ordinary to come across a 5 cent or dollar draft beer night featuring bud light, miller light, michelobe ultra, or coors light over here.

I think I'm much happier being open to a variety of types of beer, from the cheap stuff to the "better" stuff.

However, I WILL NOT drink Natural Light/Ice... that stuff is terrible, but dirt cheap so it's a staple of many colleges here.

Nobody will admit that they LIKE the stuff. I have "enjoyed" Bud and Miller Lite a few times when I got the opportunity. But that was usually past the point of caring for the taste.

The difference is, you take a nice mainstream brew like Sam Adams and a crap one like Miller Lite. You go to a party with a six-pack of Sam Adams, probably drink 4-5 out of the 6 (there's always someone asking for a beer so you often don't finish the 6 pack by yourself). Then you're already in the mood and all the decent alcohol is gone, or you get to play a stupid drinking game, and suddenly a cooler full of Miller or Coors Lite materializes out of thin air. You can easily drink another 5-6 of those things without even noticing. Then you reach CCBV (Critical Crappy Beer Volume) and you get past the Point of No Return. You go on to drink another 5-6 or more Buds/Millers and wake up the next morning bent over the sofa with your pants pulled down and a Smiley painted around your butt crack. You go home with a hangover and check Facebook for "owned" pics of yourself.

Do the math:

Sam Adams 4-5 bottles
Crap beer 10-12 bottles

That's a 2.5:1 ratio. Significantly higher.

Now take into consideration that some people at the party shared a six-pack of decent beer, yet drank the same amount of crappy beer. The ratio is even less favorable.

I still like coors light, and always will. When it's blazin' hot down here in florida, it's often the way to go.

Bud light lime is good for that. a nice beer for while you are outside working the grill. Which reminds me.... Weren't we supposed to do that? and actually i'm retarded and can't remember when your due date is, and whether its going to be or already is a boy or girl :D

We need to indeed my man. :) We should look at setting that up for sometime next few months. That way i can schedule it off from work in advance. Hit me up with a PM for a time period good for you.

The baby is due November. 28th - The day of the Florida vs. Florida State game, haha! The wife wants to keep it a surprise until the end, so that's the plan.

If you think those are a chore to finish, you would die in Canada. Some of the more popular "common" beers - equivalent to Bud in America - are 8-10%.

It's not the alcohol volume that makes miller or budweiser a chore for me to finish, it's the gag reflex that they cause. Just not a fan of the taste of either. Everyone has their own tastes, I have friends who swear that miller lite is better than bud lite.

I find my pickiness is directly related to the amount I will be spending. If I am spending a lot, I get good beer (Delirium, some good stout, some stone brewery ruination ect.). Mediocre.... some bud or PBR will do. Then it gets to the point of no return, and if it's free, I say "**** it, I'll drink it".

On a side note, my favorite beers are the ones I take out of the fridge, and taste better as they get warmer. Completely the opposite of a lot of beers, where that last warm bit at the bottom is gross and gag inducing.

Sounds good, what beers like this that we should check out?

IPA's are awesome. Usually 6-10% alc and super hoppy/bitter. An acquired taste for sure.

Sam Adams Light is by far, the best tasting light beer available, imo. Someone said something about price and I think that's a good point as well. As much as I'd love to drink microbrews, imports or Sam Adams 24/7, you've gotta settle for Bud Light or Miller High Life for $ purposes sometimes.

Thoroughly enjoying this right now. One of my all time favorites...
