Who's back in school furthering their education/career?

While many of us have had our specific careers for some time now, it's always a good idea to further your education. I've recently decided that i'm going back to school fulltime to attain my ARNP (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitoner) which is a master's based program, but i haven't ruled out continuing to doctorate as well. It's going to take me at least a few years to get it done, but i'm motivated to do it at this time. Working 3 - 12 hour shifts/week gives me 4 days off every week, so that will help my cause in many ways. I'm ready to move on up to a practitoner level of health care management.

I'm most likely going to be specializing in family practice medicine (because it's the most marketable here in florida), so it will be a different mindset for me in ways. I'll still be able to do E.R. if i desire as well, but will probably take a break from it.

I figure a thread like this is great motivation for everyone who's currently involved in furthering their own educational goals.

Who else is currently taking this route? :)

You'll NEVER see me doing geriatric care, man. It's just not my thing. I'm more of a "My arm is blown off, save it!" type of nurse. :D
 
Still chugging along through good ol' UT myself.

Kinesiology. Mmmm.. I can almost taste my CSCS certification.
 
Nursing, taking one class this semester, thinking of still staying at the hospital but changing units and going to the children's, less hours same pay..But I think it's what I need, as the semesters fly by I feel more on edge, this one is esp tough, taking care of dad, working 40+ and school..................

<sigh> but i do know when I finally have my RN it will all have been worth it.............

i take it you are a RN or BSN now huh?? I work at a hospita and do 3 12s aswell and love it!!! I am currentl in school to be a respitatory tech.. I have heard from nurses that nurse anesthetists is the way to go just hard as balls to get.. good luck to u
 
:( I have pondered returning to school 100s of times (basically on a daily basis). Can't stand corporate America. I'm considered to be in diapers yet, compared to my mummified co-workers, and I can't stand it already. I could go off on a tangent about what pi$$es me off, but I don't have the time.

Unfortunately, going back now for a doctorate (biophysiology, immunology, etc) would take another 5 yrs of my life. That's hard to stomach especially when I don't know if I'd get a decent job outside of the lab.

I'm destined to own my own business. With that in mind, I may take up some exec. management courses (pricing strategy, market research strategy, bla bla).

In the end, I do not think another degree will make me happy. Being my own boss will (I hope!).

BTW, those of you studying for your MCAT, you should check out ExamKrackers. Pretty slick ;) You can get the Audio component off a torrent site.....FYI.

I was considering RN myself Trauma. The health care industry is in crazy demand and is projected to be in greater demand with the years to come.
 
I want to go back to school but with our situation it made more sense for my wife to return right now she is and LVN and and getting her RN would result in a bigger bump in pay then what a degree for me would as I have 10years in my profession and my pay is based more on experience than education. I would still like to go back after my wife is done just to have the advance degree
 
A recent lay off has me considering vocational rehabilitation.

I am pondering Automotive Technology as I am very mechanically inclined and once the industry rebounds and the new technology of alternate fuel begins to come to fruition the automotive industry will rebound.

I am also considering getting a Residential Home Inspection Certification and Home Appraisal Certification. regardless of the industry status there are still many homes being sold in foreclosure and short sales that still need inspections and or appraisal. The housing industry will rebound eventually. It would be nice to be able to do something completely different than I pigeon holed in right now. The courses are short and all that is required is certification afterwords. I am networked with knowing a lot of people in realestate which would be a bonus.
 
Glad I'm not the only one. I have been in commercial construction for about 10 years, and lost my job last September. I have been unable to find a DAMN thing since, not even swinging a hammer; I really don't care about construction, that's just what I happened to fall into.

Fortunately for my family and myself my wife (also a nurse) just got a promotion and a large bump in income, allowing me to go back to school. I just got a part time job and will be attending the University of Nebraska pursuing a degree in exercise science and nutrition.

Its weird being the second-tier wage earner for me though. I supported the family while my wife was in nursing school, and in the last 8 months her career has really taken off.

Does a sugar mama have any calories?

dont go to one of those commercialized school like lincoln tech unless you qualify for finicial aid and can get in free.. they are ridiclously over priced.. the auto mechanic industry mainly moves up with experience and you can take your ase test yourself and studying for them from a book..

if your thinking of benefiting off this whole green movement (if it is still around and going) an engineer would prolly be better.. work for a company developing new ways to make power or modifying ways we already do that is if it still being talked about but it will most likely fad away as our gas prices continue to fall back down

nursing is pretty stable.. no matter what happenes people always get sick
 
starting my 4th and final year of university (double degree) and **** hell am I over it... only 2 semesters left now... it will be 18 years of school including kindergarten.... P's get degrees (my degree marks arent so vital for my career... cbf explaining)... so its laid back... but just over it

my fear is when I start work in a years time how will I have time to eat properly and every 2 hours etc... I get class say 2x a week, so i get plenty days to lift and eat at home however I want... at uni i eat less on the off days.. so i have no clue how ill do it once im employed :\
 
I finished last year for Ed. Leadership. Hopefully a supervisor's position opens up eventually, right now no one is going to retire with the market shot to hell and their 403B's taking a beating
 
Finally decided to use my GI bill and take some classes this semester. Im working on getting prereqs out of the way so I can apply for the associate in nursing program. Just getting accepted into the program is a pretty daunting task itself, and then the fact that I have been out of high school for 10 years and never gave college a though until this last year, we'll see how it goes. Im taking a personal trainer/ fitness instructor class right now that is "supposed to" prepare us for the NSCA CPT exam, so that may be my fall back if that goes well enough. Our text book for the class is "The Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning", so its a very in depth class. Should be fun, either way I go.
 
Graduated two years ago with a B.S. in Molecular Bio. Now, with a couple more years research under my belt and a much larger savings account, I'm going back to work on my PhD.

It coincidentally ended up being perfect timing, as the biotech industry in southern california absolutely dead, and the program will provide financial stability, housing, everything. I'm real excited.
 
im 20 years old currently studying to be an RN (registered nurse). Job security, paychecks, and working with an outstanding number of females..where can you go wrong? Haha. Especially in today's economy choosing a career path for someone young like myself is definitely important.

Lol - You sound like me. ;)

I graduated and passed the boards by the age of 21 myself. Talk about a culture shock for a 21 y/o guy in general. It really is a dudes paradise in SO many ways. The job itself is great as well, and your knowledge base wil grow daily with each new clinical experience. I'll tell you now though, you really don't learn how to be a nurse until you actually start working indepedently. Nursing school teaches basic information, procedures, and technique, but the real world application and time management aspects aren't something they can teach you, but will learn through your own experience on the job and subsequent training.

Making my own schedule, job security, and good money made it well worth the efforts in the end. :D

Nursing school sucks to get through, i won't lie, but when it's over, you'll know why you went through that horror in the first place. ;)
 
thanks TRAUMA thats what everyone keeps telling me. hopefully ill get through nursing school as best as possible. that diploma means major $$ haha.I love when i can get a guys view on nursing helps every time because its usually women giving me their view. Us fockers and future fockers need to stick together haha

I agree with that, school stinks, but working at the hospital and having some friends who are nurses on my unit helps, they quiz me all the time, and call me in to see whats going on....nice to have on the job experience..............

ohh, i am such a freak. i hate it (honestly!). so, as many of you know, i recently graduated college and i find that i feel, a bit "incomplete". I want a job that is:
- less repetitive
- requires more critical thinking
-more career advancement
- a lot more pay (+$90,000 min.)

currently i feel that dental hygiene does not provide those qualities for me. i am pretty capped out as far as salary (75,000 TO 85,000) is concerned and feel the need to make much more. as many of you know, i have a love for personal finance and feel that that is my calling. so... back to the books it is, all the while continuing my work as an RDH. i am considering financial analyst, personal financial advisor, or becoming an actuary. all of those careers are going to put me back in school for quite a bit. oh fun...
 
wish i had the money and the time..... its not easy to do out here, not making excuses but it comes to a point its inpractical and you need some sort of help, not to mention it would take forever because full time is pretty much impossible.
 
Well I was considering a degree in convicology, but the price of ski mask went up, so I had to resort to being an honest ranger, jk. But, seriously, I am in the IT industry, and things are still ok in my field. I am moving in with my fiance (she is a pediatric cardiologist), she said I can take a yr or two off to get some more certifications. I plan to have my CCNA, CCNP by the mid 2010. I want to take a moment to say that I am proud to see so many of you continuing to strive to better yourself. Nothing like an unstimulated brain. Oh BTW, have any of you all found yourself sometimes embarassed that your kids come home with homework you can't wrap your head around? I haven't as yet, but I know my brother is getting it all the time. Simply knowing 1 + 1 =2 does not cut it any more. So, for those of you sitting on the couch, time is running out, and if you have kids, you owe them you becoming a better and more educated person. B5150, kudos on the new forum you started.

You can alway do it part time, and get a student loan to help with the financial aspect.

I plan to attain my masters degree first, and then take the boards for ARNP (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitoner.) I plan to then carry on to my PhD shortly there-after. It's a lot of work ahead, but i'm more dedicated than ever to tackle these accomplishments at this time.

I'm thinking of going back 10-15 years down the road in order to be a school administrator. Right now I'm too busy and I enjoy my new job.
 
I graduated in May 07 with a degree in Business. I worked at a Children's Home part-time for about two years prior to graduation. There was an Accounting position that opened. I applied and got the job. I plan to go back to school this summer and pursuing a Bachealor's degree in Accounting, and then a Masters. I don't see myself futhering my education in Business. I enjoy being in the accounting field. Hopefully I will keep my full time job until I finish undergrad.
 
Anyone here taken the series 7? I am considering taking it eventually, it seems some people think it's impossible and others say it's a breeze

This is what my bro does; he loves it. He's a civilian firefighter for the military, though. It's nice for him since he can transfer to different states as long as it's within the military system.
 
School makes me feel young, and in some weird way, slows down time for me! But, I'm just weird!!!
