how do you tell a friend bad news.

so a friend of mine is in a couple of bands and he just released his first album.
he is extremely stoked about it and asked my opinion of the album. i listened to it and it is one of the worst bands i have ever heard in my life. how do i tell him without sounding like a total dickhead.

is he good and everyone else is bad?

if so i'd say he needs a better supporting cast.

if he's a good friend i'd lie my butt off. I generally just try to help my friends keep their confidence up.

Just be supportive, a lot of things pass for music now a days so maybe he will get lucky and fit into one of those categories.... just try to be a good friend and be supporitive there are going to be plenty of critics out there and im sure he will hear more than he ever wants to

dude he's in a band! if you THINK it sucks...he KNOWS it sucks! tell him and hug it out or else you'll be listen in to that crap every time you get together!

I think you should support him, yet be wary lol. ragin is right. imagine if every time you chill with him he says "Dude, check out our latest track, here lemme throw this on for ya" and you reach for the nearest sharp object to shop into your ear canal....lol

You thinking it sucks doesn't mean everyone does. Is it a type of music you dont normally listen to?

yeah i would tell him man. you guys are friends and you should be able to tell him the truth. He might be mad for a while but it will be all good in time and you guys will laugh about it 5 years from now when he busts out the demo tape.

You are not saying he sucks, you are just saying the band sucks.

How about offering constructive suggestions, instead of just telling him it sucks?

Doing it in a positive manner saves face.

I think constructive criticism is best.

"Sucks" is a vague term and im sure even though its not good, they probably put a lot of effort in it. Be specific and say "The vocals are flat" or "You guys arent tight yet" or "You need some to take your time and try to get better songs ". Or any combination of things you hear that are wrong. It can also be a terrible recording and you can suggest they go to a better studio or work with a producer to whip the band into shape.

If you cant be specific, then hes probably going to think you dont know your ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to music.

A friend once told me the band Dredg "Sucks". While I know they're kinda mellow and not commercial and certainly not everyone's cup of tea...saying they "Suck" means he's a complete idiot on music because they are sick musicians.

Get what I'm saying?

Be honest, but constructive.
Often times, we occupy our own self-righteousness over someone's feelings. Just be direct about your taste in music, and tell him what you feel. What else is there - lies? Fukc that. You can carry that weight if you want.

it is mostly his lead vocalist that blows, he rocks the guitar. i will just let him know that its not to bad, its just not my type of music. and i may have to mention the vocalist as well.

Do it right ad you will earn more respect from him when he realizes you are being honest and looking out for him.

Look for things that can be improved. Also, it wouldnt hurt to find things you liked. He would appreciate it in the long run. If it is just that bad, i would find out his true feelings first and construct my gameplan around that

I'm a musician - and I can tell you I sincerely appreciate it when friends are totally honest with reviews of my original stuff. Just tell him straight up that you think he can do better. If he gets upset he's got some growing to do as an artist.

My vocalist sucks too....working on fixing that.

I certainly appreciated when my buds started telling me the truth about him.
Drunk patrons arent the best judges.

Cant wait to replace.
