I think thats been revised. I dont think its actually the alcohol itself that is beneficial but rather the components inside of it (ie the anti-oxidants within red wine not the actual alcohol itself). Alcohol itself is not good in any shape form or way, they contain empty calories (weight gain), increase triglycerides, are detrimental to the lipid profile, it also increases chances of cancer. The amount recomended for a beer is 10oz 4oz of wine 1.5oz of 80-proof liquor and 1oz of liquor 100 proof. The American Heart Association also suggests that there are guidlines for those who already drink and if someone does not drink normally NOT to start. They are suggesting moderation to potentially gain some sort of benefit in a habit that is otherwise detrimental. And the same benefits seen by just eating the grapes in which are used to produce wine gave the same results without any alcohol intake at all.
As far as european countries being healthier in general thats true, but mostly that is attributed to diet, their "average" person consumes way less calories and more beneficial foods as well as a better balanced diet. The U.S, lead the world in obesity especially within children and obesity is a common reason for the hypertension, stroke, cancer, myocardial infarction, COPD, and various other respiratory and cardiac diseases. its not the wine with the meal making the difference, its the fact the meal is nutritional, well balanced and typically isnt followed by the phrase "do you want fries with that".
Now as far as weightlifting and bodybuilding in general. Nutrition should be good, sometimes stacked in a certain way depending on cut/bulk/maintenance. But there is no overwhelming reason why alcohol would actually enhance any of these activities. The only reason for wine would be to get the anti-oxidant effects, and that can be attained through just eating grapes.
Weather you want to drink or not is up to the individual, but if health is the reason for drinking there are better ways to attain that. I also personally feel that my gains from not drinking outweigh my gains when i was drinking.
I am not saying that 2 drinks a year will kill you or destroy all your progress, I am simply stating that alcohol itself is in no way beneficial.
