Army Guy goes Destruction Mode clothed in PINK!!

haha, NICE! in 16 years of marriage I can honestly say that I have never been on the couch!! besides, they are all too short for my long legs anyways!!

On a side note, the back of my bad knee was swollen the last few days. This is new for me. Even before the surgery I never had swelling BEHIND the leg????!!!! I think I twisted it a bit on my hike through the mountains Monday and it has been a pain ever since. I have legs tomorrow, so I took the day oof from cardio today. Thoughts from the crew out there????

If your knee is swollen, especially in the back (odd place that's for sure!), I would take it really easy tomorrow. I would not do any leg press or squats that's for sure. Obviously you have some fluid or swelling in the joint and that's not going to feel too hot if you are trying to put 500 pounds on it. I would look at some indirect leg movements like extensions (if they don't irritate you), leg curls, calf work, SLDLs etc... If my knees bother me I always give them an extra day off or will do like I described above, seems to keep the swelling from increasing and sometimes it helps it go away. Always been an advocate of active recovery from injuries like such, getting the blood flowing around the joint won't hurt if you're smart about what you are doing. Also, if this is your rebuilt knee, I would be doubly careful. You don't want to damage it again!!!!!!!!!

Half weight, twices as sloww and half ROM and you should be okay.

thanks guys for the input. Yes it is the rebuilt knee, which has me concerned. I was doing great until that long 3 hour trek through the mountains Monday. There is def fluid in there, I can feel it... odd feeling too... I think in the morning I will kill shoulders and then just go light on legs. This sucks :(

Get one of them Army docs to drain it for you ;).

How can you tell if there is fluid in your knee?

It swells like crazy. Imagine a synthol injection at the knee. Well, not THAT bad, but it swells and gets super obvious and weird looking. Swelling in one knee looks like a fat persons leg, you can't see the knee caps, its like dimples where the cap should be, lol.

ah okay. reps man.

so true my friend!! That and my knee is now popping because of the fluid. Not fun. And to make matters worse... it's SNOWING AGAIN!!!

Alright so it was decision time this morning!!! Yesterday the knee gave out 2 times while walking up stairs... not a good thing, and I was wincing most of the day. Today was supposed to be leg and shoulder day... :frustrate . the decision was:
Try today Vs. give it 1 more day and hit it on Saturday
As the alarm clock went off at 0500 this morning I looked out the window still undetermined, and it was a full fledged blizzard outside :aargh4: soooo decision made, I went back to bed for an hour dreaming of squatting tomorrow morning... if I can walk that is!!! :grumpy: but shoulders will definitely be on!!!

Big guy I know the feeling all too well, every time I go in to do HST I want squats to be my exercise for legs but my hip is still being a major pain (literally), so I have to work around it. Take care of that knee, a surgeon did a good job for you and it would be a shame if its all undone. Patience, as that annoying person once said, is a virtue (and necessary at times!). What part of Utah are you in by the way? You should be skiing with all this snow, that's one heck of a leg workout right there.

have you guys seen this one yet??? hide your women and children... it's MANBOOB time!!!

yeah I am not good at the patience thing either!!! I am in Provo and Orem, depending what college they have me teaching at. would love to do some skiing, but alas... not in the cards today. the wife wants to take me furniture shopping... please kill me

I just make sure my gym time is during the dreaded shopping expeditions... though somehow I am forced to be excited about new storage bins and a "pretty" new garbage can for the bathroom. That was one of the most forced smiles in the history of the world... eyes were rolling once she turned away, LOL! :pokey:

If you can't do squats I find that if you use the leg press as a pre-exhaust you can get legs done pretty efficiently. I am making good progress with leg press and extensions.

I am really starting to feel the recomp effects that you were alluding too DW. Pink has me drying out and swelling up at the same time. I am forced to wear size 36 jeans because the bigger thighs, but they are just hanging off of me at the moment and the belt is taking a beating. I think I may have to take a look at stealing my teenage son's 34s. ahhh happiness is being able to fit into your son's pants!!!

And fin, been there and done that on the bathroom garbage can thing... the wife caught me a while back rolling my eyes and I haven't heard the end of it since!!!

hey man, wishin you a speedy recovery. i hate not bein able to lift. but gotta take pain and soreness (read: not DOMS) very seriously because if you ignore them they can snowball (hahaha...you're in a blizzard :pokey:) into permanent problems.

heal up soon -- you've got more PRs to hit in the gym.

My guess is that you slightly hyper-extended your knee in the trail. More than likely favoring it a bit, or you accidentally did the ol prop one leg up cross the other over it and rest thing. I have done that before and the back of my knee swole up and made it hard to walk for a few days. Now I always try to rest with my feet down or not crossed over one of my legs. The weight of the other leg pushing down o the knee joint gets to it after a period of time. By the time you notice it being uncomfortable you have already hyperextended it. Hopefully that is all it is.

Does it feel like there is a ball in your knee pit and is it tight back there? How does it feel with lateral movement, any issues there? THe tightening up can pull things out of place a little to making just about everything uncomfortable but bending your knee slightly and relaxing it.

well it definitely hurts laterally and there feels to be more fluid there then anything else. just a soft gushy mess. What you said about the leg cross thing makes sense. I need to pay WAY more attention to that.

Hope your knee feels better in the morning AG

well woke up today, stretched the legs and nearly died as the ligaments in the back of the knee expanded. So, no gym today. I will do some arnold's in the garage with some lateral raises to keep the shoulders happy. My DBs only go to 40, so very limited here at the house. :(

Well at least with the Arnold's they're still a decent exercise at the lighter weights. And with the isolation shoulder movements one can't really go too high in weight.

Hook grip + lead with your elbows. BOULDERS FOR SHOULDERS!!!!

Now that is how you made it to Major, Major. Intelligent decisions... why dont you pre-exhaust with a set of 40 lb T-Cups then go into your arnolds. That will make the most out of the weight you have.

actually that is a great idea!!! I haven't had a chance yet because I have been doing my honeydew or rather honey-DO list. The painting the sanding the staining... please kill me!!!!

Pink Day 15

:zx11pissed:The Rumble of FRUSTRATION
:zx11pissed:

So today at the gym I had multiple posers constantly walking in front of the mirror, taking my bench, though I was standing next to it and my gear was ON IT, and many other just nonsense!!! :aargh4: IMHO there should be a required basic gym 101 manners class for all gym members!!!
anyways... off the soapbox :soapbox:

The lift:
Chest:
the benches were taken by old men doing sit-ups... I kid not... so went to DB press for the first time flat in many many moons.
90's x 10 - 100's x 10 - 110s x7 (stabilizers def not used to that higher weight) 120's x 4 (my grip went out before chest did. wish I had chalk. could have done at least 3 more :hitwithrock: )
HS Incline press - did these because some schmuck grabbed my bench WITH MY STUFF ON IT)
180x10 - 235x8 - 255x5 - 255x4 - Immediate Drop 180x6

SUPER SET!!!
Cable Crossovers:
80x10 - 90x10 - 100x6 - 70x15
Peck Deck:
130x10 x 160x10 - 180x6 - Burnout 100x20
Chest was pretty pumped after this

Triceps
2 hand overhead DB Extensions
80x15 - 115x8 - 115x8 - Immediate Drop - 75x13

Super Set
Standing cable overhead tricep extensions:
130x20 - 140x20 - 150x20 - 160x20 (PR City baby!!!! for reps)
Standing cable tricep extensions:
130x12 - 140x12 - 150x12 - 160x12
Holy tater sauce Batman!!! My arms were ON FIRE!!!! This entire SS took less than 5 minutes. I must admit between my last exchange from overhead to regular I took about 15 seconds to shake my arms. FELT AMAZING!! :nutkick:

Another SS just for kicks. just used the same 35's and there was 15 sec pause between sets. did 2 and had to jet to get to work.
Incline tricep extensions:
35's x 8 - 35's x 8
Incline Flies:
35's x 8 - 35's x 8

all in all almost to TG's standards..., but slowly getting there. Tricep numbers are getting pretty good, and chest is as well. By the end of summer the goal is 315x10 on bench... we shall see muahahahahahahahhahahahaha

good job

sounds like a bit of pent up aggression there served you well :)

ah man I would have been ragin hard! Nice workout man!

Yah if someone miffs me at the gym they hear about it. For instance, if someone is curling at the squat rack, I kindly tell them that I need to do what the apparatus was intended for and please go elsewhere. Somebody takes my equipment I tell them, I'm not finished... I do try to work with people rather than to get in a brawl over it, but I don't ever let things go.

I do the same DW, but the guys that took the bench were older than Moses, perhaps you know them...??? LOL kidding of course... but they didn't look like they had a clue. I told them I was still using it but they looked confused, so I grabbed my gear and went elsewhere. The other problems were with a few teenagers. One of them I physically removed from my way. He didn't like that, but then saw who was moving him, and kindly moved...!! Was great. Then some schmuck took my handles off the cables I was using and walked away. He was across the gym before I even realized what happened.

Man, that sounds like one fugged up gym, I think mine's bad... well it is but people are a little better behaved...

usually not that bad, but for some reason today it was... I guess that is what one should expect at Gold's, but they have the best selection and heaviest DBs around.

Public gyms are a Pain. I miss training in my mentor's basement... no hassles, people worked together and the rules were abided by.

I love all of the supersetting. Gotta be delivering some sick hypertrophy! What has your carb intake been w/ your dosings? (Sorry if it is answered in the thread, I may have missed it?)

I love the supersets!!! I missed the trifecta of doing those, immediate drops sets, and some rest pauses. The bench I was going to use for the rest pause was taken right out from under my nose. I sure love them though, and hate them ALL at the same time
As far as the carb intake goes, I try to keep it on lifting days at around 200 and non around 150... don't ask how successful I am at this because I have 7 kids, 6 being boys, and when it is time for dinner it is survival of the fittest! Sometimes the wife gets tired and instead of chicken we have spaghetti. Oh well.
On the weekends though the diet usually hits all time lows, but the wife made sticky buns for desert last night... I had 2 I am sad to say..., but OHHHHH they were good. :biglaugh:
Kind of like TG though... I lift and do all this stuff so I can eat what I want (at least on the weekends) and not get all bent up about it

alright, for those of you wanting a new dip and pull-up routine, I have the perfect video for you. I think this guy saw SilentBob doing his thing and stole it from him!!! Check this freak out!!!

Careful with that "eye roll" if get caught doing that im in the deepest kind of shiiit... My wife says it dismissive!!!!! i say "WHAT" then all hell breaks out... Oh what joy

Stuff is awesome there is a whole workout now for stuff like this. I am thinking about putting some bars in my back yard, and a set of rings.

It's literally called, "ghetto fitness," it's been around for awhile. Type in ghetto fitness on youtube and you'll find a huge array of different videos. They've evolved from regular pull-up variations to something more acrobatic with a mix of power muscle-up moves from the Crossfit people.

I was doing a ton of "ghetto fitness" stuff upfront on my back days for awhile. It's cool for variation, but I'm a hefty guy and when my sets turned into 5 pull ups, it felt lame.

Call me selfish or whatever, but that's one of the main reasons why I never have and never will espouse...it's just too much bull**** involved. To me, it's smart NOT to do it...I recognize that I'm not "marriage material"...so why would I?

Thats the name of it!!!!! Funny thing is as a kid / teen ager I used to do a lot of stuff like that. I just thought it was neat. I didn't ever consider it exercise, I just wanted to see if I could do things. I am honestly seriously considering putting some posts in the back yard and making some bars to work out on out there. Yeah I saw the Hannible videos about 2 years ago. I love the muscularity and flexibilty those guys have. Plus each of those things is a seperate new accomplishment on it's own. I can still sit indian style on the floor put my fists on the floor pick my legs and butt up and rotate up into a handstand just using my shoulders. I just can't hold the handstand right now. That is more balance and practice though.

here's some of their more acrobatic evolution of ghetto fitness.

There even crazier vids of guys doing pull ups, launching themselves upward onto three or four different tiers of bars, going all the way down and all the way back up. I can't find it right now, though.

Next thing you know tese guys will be in Vegas. IF THEY HAVE THE SMARTS!!! Otherwise someone is gonna steal what they do and make big money of it by creating a show...

or a movie... I can see it now... ghetto kid on the monkey bars helps the US Olympic team win the gold with his uncouth approach. Disney will make millions... we can call it the ghetto Rudy!!! LOL it IS impressive though!!
