My chest performance felt a bit sub-par today. I hit the same numbers in terms of weight and reps, but the weight felt much heavier then it did last time. I have a bad habit of hitting chest the day after back all the time, and sometimes, as a result of that succession, my strength (and energy) is effected.
I've considered going back to my old chest split. All incline one session and Flat/Decline/Wide the next, switching back & forth. This method of mine of switching back & forth acts like a natural tapering for my chest. If I'm hitting 295+ week after week, my performance tends to be very off or simply spirals into a trend of diminishing performance, whereas, when implementing my incline only days, I can't go above 275 and the rest of the workout as a whole is not as demanding on the CNS or the muscle, but because it's so isolated, it has it's unique benefits. For whatever reason, this old split works for me, so you can imagine my disappointment during those few months where I was not able to perform ANY incline movements (due to a upper pec injury).
Furthermore, this method of mine helps to alleviate monotony. I really don't like doing the same workouts week by week. The starting, major compound movements, I'm okay with being consistent on, but the rest of the workout is usually instinctual. This is one of the main reasons I can't follow a designated program (unless I have a VERY specific goal), but hypertrophy/strength or strength/hypertrophy is still too broad of an objective for me to be on a train track, as oppose to a general freeway.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LUXURY...... OR VANITY
Due to the fitness crazed environment of So Cal and the dense surrounding Cities (not as dense as NY of course, but dense nonetheless and close together) we have gyms in every city and relatively nearby to each other.
This morning, I went to my usual gym, but I just didn't like the vibe, its hard to explain. I warmed up my bench, sat up, looked around and the vibe perpetuated lethargy and apathety, so I drove to the gym a City over and performed my workout. I'm not always this weird, but I've probably done this less then 5 times.
I've actually done cardio at one gym and finished my lifts at another.
Hell, I've done cardio at one gym and did another cardio machine at another, right in succession of each other. These are rare, rare occasions of course, but the option to be so liberal about where to workout is definitely there. Hell, if you had an LA Fitness AND a 24Hr Fitness pass, you could switch between 2 to 3 gyms in one city.
