10/16/08 - Day 11

Overview : Aside from not being able to do any real squats here at home...I made the best of my leg day and now at about 12 hours after the end of my workout....my calves and Hammies are SOOOOORRRREEEEE!! It's such a good feeling though. The little pain you get from sitting to standing...or going up and down stairs...I love that pain. It's the kind of pain you get only on leg day....and I love it. The only other time I feel pain like that is after doing A LOT of laps in a pool.

I also do forearms on legs day and they are nice and beat up too. I had one of the best pumps in my life in my forearms today. Could be that I used 4 Cre-02 instead of my normal 3 pre w/o...or maybe it was just that my forearms hadn't been beat up in a while and they needed it. Either way....it was INTENSE. A good workout today for sure.

Could anyone let me know the worst possible result from lifting heavier than usual while not eating to match it? I mean....I know i'll not gain size...but my strength should still go up right? At the worst...I should shed some fat? Thanks.

Just play it by ear and listen to your body. If your recovery starts to suffer then either change your training volume to match your caloric intake and goals or up you calories again. Your body will tell you right away.

Well I gotta say....it's going to be more cals for this guy then! I am enjoying my new fun training wayyy too much to go ahead and shoot for low weight/high reps again. Maybe later on in the log when i'm trying to shed a few quick ones before the Ahhhhhnold....but not now. Now is for some muscle baby :)

I will add cals...and all will be well with the world!

If you're "under-caloried" (might have made up a new word there?) not only will you lack energy to go full-out during your workouts but it will also hamper any desired fat loss. When you're not taking in enough calories the body perceives that it is starving and goes into starvation mode, trying to hold on to all tissues possible (especially fats due to the high energy content). The body will actually prefer to burn off muscle before fat when in starvation mode. As you know gaining size is not an option when under-caloried but also gaining strength is probably not going to happen either. As you would not have the abundance of nutrients needed for your recovery process. (I have been there, done that) The trick is to find the level of caloric intake, where you are giving your body enough calories for energy and recovery purposes, then using cardio/workouts/etc to burn off any excess calories. It's a tough balance to lean out and gain muscle at the same time, it's much easier to bulk or cut rather than trying to do both at the same time.

no full update til tonight...but let's just say that I am either much weaker than I had suspected....or I just found out why I need to be eating more :sad:

I think it's the latter....since i've had lifts in recent months that were much higher. ugh.
 
Just make sure you add in quality calories. You are doing well so keep on fighting!! You will be lean and muscular when we meet at the Arnold..

My girlfriend's brother has an AVM in his brain which causes him to have the occasional seizure and has caused great problems for him. This coming tuesday he was set to have surgery to remove it and chaos ensued today.

From 2pm until 5am he had over 10 seizures...some being worse than others. He right now is being medivacced to Philadelphia where I am headed after I go take a 3 hour nap. I will be there until at least sunday evening....so I won't be able to update until then. I have all my nutritional stats and workout from today...and sat/sun are off days anyway.

Dude, honestly, I think low-cal is where it's at for you. If you have trouble with training intensity, pop some stimulants. You don't have to worry about your body storing anything if you keep your metabolism up by eating often. Just make sure you're getting in enough protein and some healthy fats. Carbohydrates are overated. Take them in pre-wo, and that's pretty much all you need. I'm speaking from experience here.

Just got back from Philly. He's not doing so great and they have to run a lot more tests, but I don't have much paid time off available to me so I had to come home to work the overnight shift tonight. I will probably head back down there tomorrow...not too sure yet.

Once I get all my stuff organized here, if I have time I will post an update for friday.
 
10/17/08 - Day 12

Overview : So today was not the best lift day for me. I felt that maybe I didn't take in enough cals yesterday...but in retrospect...I think maybe I was just weak for the day. A long week with less sleep than i'd have liked and here I am, haha. As you'll see...I took in WAYYY more cals today...but I was also awake from 9am til about 6am the following morning. Either way...Still pretty sore.

Well it's 5:30am and i'm just getting home. I've been off work since midnight but as par for the course...more catastrophe.

My girlfriend's brother has an AVM in his brain which causes him to have the occasional seizure and has caused great problems for him. This coming tuesday he was set to have surgery to remove it and chaos ensued today.

From 2pm until 5am he had over 10 seizures...some being worse than others. He right now is being medivacced to Philadelphia where I am headed after I go take a 3 hour nap. I will be there until at least sunday evening....so I won't be able to update until then. I have all my nutritional stats and workout from today...and sat/sun are off days anyway.


I hope all goes well for him. My neighbor had a 3inch tumor in his brain removed. He was in the hospital not even a week. Came ovet with staples in his entire head, ear to ear and not even a few days later they removed the staples. He is feeling great and itching to go back to work!!

I hope your GF's brother does as well!!

He has already had one major brain surgery with the head-size scar to show for it. Right now they have his head under a machine with electrodes to show where the problems are coming from. I feel absolutely horrible for him. He's only 23 and already so much craziness.

Yeah it is awful to watch.My neighbors wife has MD I think and she can't work and barely walks or leaves the house. They have a 16yr old son who is taking on quite a bit. My neighbor is pushing to get back to work way sooner than he should to pay medicl bills. He has a scar from one ear all the way up and over to the other ear.

I can't imagine the fear of needing brain surgery! I hope he gets better really soon. Hang in there.

note : I tried eating as healthy as possible in the hospital...but it wasn't exactly a perfect day in nutrition yesterday. Today was better though...and I pushed a workout up instead of having a day off in case my week starts off rocky the next few days...so tomorrow morning after work I will post my shoulders/triceps workout

Hospital food is downright awful at the hospital he's at right now. At Lehigh, the food is actually good...but at Penn...not so much.

I am going to take a 4 hour nap and then i'm headed back to Philly for the day.

Overview : Well today was supposed to be an off day, but with all the insanity going on in my life at the moment...I figured I better lift when I have the time and hope I can stay on track this week. I normally don't do Shoulders and Triceps for another day....but when in Rome...or something.

Must not have hurt me to lose a day of rest....I had some decent lifts on little sleep :)

Hey Everyone. Got back from Philly this morning to go to the dentist. let me tell you...scaling and planing hurts. Don't let your gums get messed up...ever.

I don't think lifting today would be all for the best. I may take the bike out for a ride...or maybe do some yoga though. I will update later tonight and let everyone know.

PS - My left arm is gaining size...FINALLY.
