A good alternative is to take a slower digesting protein just before bed (e.g., casein protein powder). If you wake up additionally in the middle of the night you can always add another in, but I wouldn't intentionally interupt your sleep cycle to do it.
I drink a whey shake made with 16oz "No Sugar Added" Soy milk before bed. Ends up being like 80g of protein and just 10 carbs.. gets me through the night!
