Hyde’s Strength Odyssey

That's the part I find most impressive, your strength gains, and then retention with weight cutting has been fantastic

It didn’t happen overnight, and it has taken a good amount of effort, but I’d like to point out that at no point has it been driven by pushing a bunch of gear. And there was elbow surgery during the last half year as well. And that adductor tear 8 weeks before the recent 220 class meet. So I am proud of where things are at, and where they’re going!

Back at the barbell club for the first time since before the meet to crank the stereo up for some back & biceps. There was a tape measure laying around for a size contest on the board; right arm clocked in at 17.5” flexed with a pump I didn’t bother with the left, but it’s my dominant arm so I’m sure it’s close enough either way.

Chest was 46”, waist at navel was 40”, left thigh was 28”.

At the commercial gym this morning, I met a guy who was 53 & moved from Italy last year; we benched together & honestly both were able to push a little harder because we were working in together. Really positive experience, and it just reinforced how beneficial lifting with anyone else can be, regardless of experience level!

Plan is to fast from ~2pm today until whenever our second Easter dinner is with the in-laws on Sunday. Been a minute since I’ve done a 3-day fast, so skipping training Sunday I can make it happen.

I’ve been thinking about this recently. I always train and my home and I feel like I’m probably missing out. There’s a pretty cool local gym where I am that has an outdoor area. I’m gonna sign up soon I think.

You should, an outdoor area especially could be a lot of fun. I have my home gym, a commercial membership, and key to a barbell club. Training is my passion, my favorite hobby, so it’s worth having the variety to make it more enjoyable or easier to execute when you may not feel like doing the work.

At 227 bodyweight? That’s excellent!

Thanks! I have put a lot of emphasis on my tricep strength in recent years, and my arms also seem to be responding very quickly to adding bicep work back finally since elbow surgery.

Oh boy, another 3 day fast. Those are always fun. LOL I agree on having some memberships for options it makes a huge difference. I go through phases of where I want to train, I kind of prefer my hypertrophy style stuff in the commercial gym and my strength based stuff at the house.

amen.
During the 'rona my buddy let me borrow a ton of gear, power rack, bumper plates etc and lifting at home is cool and convenient but at one point I had 3 different gym memberships (different cities), and at another point I had 2 gym memberships when I OWNED a 3rd one lol. There's a different vibe going to a place vs doing it at home. both are good, but I do enjoy going to a good gym. its like our playground. Sure the slide dad put in the backyard is great, but can we go to the park down the road today? lol

As much as I like the convenience of working out at home, that’s the main reason I still like going to our commercial gym. Just the camaraderie of working out with the guys and pushing each other really does help push just a little harder. Oh, and all the college girls in yoga pants doesn’t hurt none.😜

Wow, so you’re looking at a 72 hour fast, I didn’t even think about the total hours when you said that Thursday, man impressive. I would be stealing the dog’s bone and chewing on the furniture by then. 😜
Seriously though, I’ve only done a 72 hour fast twice, and the cool part is it stimulates so much detoxification that they say your body starts to heal, so much so that your poop will almost completely lose any smell, which is crazy.
You will look very lean by Sunday. 💪

I'm very proud of my smelly poop :poop:

Just about 50 hours in, and thankfully I feel radically stronger/better than yesterday.

Normally when I fast for a just a day or so, it’s all ketoflu where I feel dizzy, no legs under me, lacking energy to even concentrate often. But today I woke up ready to go: definitely full keto at this point.

68 hours down! Probably only will get a few more, I think we’re eating around 1pm. Wish I could keep this going because I feel really in the groove now.

Lol this ain’t nuttin’ but a peanut - my longest was 7 days, and I didn’t understand electrolytes/hydration then like I do now! That was a test. This is just cheating to get easy fatloss!

Nice work! That's a new low right?

Well besides the 220 for the meet forgot about that. Duh...

Lol yeah snuck down to 218.4 for that, but this is a hydrated low. Of course I’m missing 4lbs of glycogen I bet, but I was sitting 226-227 prior to this most mornings so I probably got a couple lbs of fat loss out of this. I have also been pretty active - weather had been gorgeous until today, many hours logged playing at the park daily with my son last few days.

Total fast: ~71 hours, 40 min

Easter ham, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, macaroni & cheese, pineapple, hot pumpkin dump cake & coffee - 2 helpings of everything!

A fine feast to cap a great fast - life is good

Nice work man! Are you going to implement these fasts regularly?

I would like to do another soon, take a bit more fat off. I can literally see the difference in my bodyfat from just 72 hours.

It’s like holding your breath; you can stop the fast any time you’re ready! No risk.

John Meadow’s was a genius and a great guy.

I still remember meeting him at the Arnold. He was exhausted from competing & totally happy to stop for me when I ran into him outside the bathroom. A class act.

I have learned so many helpful things from his Youtube content over the years it’s crazy. Nutrition, recovery, exercise execution, drug selection/dosage, training intensity, and most importantly to enjoy the ride!

Anyone who hasn’t should go enjoy all the awesome stuff on the Mountain dog YouTube channel. Goldmine.

it really is. the hardest parts in my world is balancing fasting around social obligations, dinner with my wife, or lifting days. But aside from that it's a really interesting experience, especially when you're in the middle of it contemplating your actual needs, relationship with food and whatever else the mind thinks of when fasting. Sorta how I'd imagine a mushroom trip being lol.

It also feels very primal. The science taught us that fasting is muscle sparing, and healing for the body. Scripture suggested fasting many times for spiritual reasons. But when I'm actually doing it, and thinking about the many benefits of it, It almost feels as though this is actually what primal man is supposed to be doing rather than eating 3-6 square meals a day like we are being waited on hand and foot.

Reminds me of this meme if that makes sense, lol

Now that’s the way to break a fast, an Easter meal with all the good sides and dessert.

I’ve done one powerlifting meet and the timing was beautiful. I fasted the day before weigh ins, the weigh in day was also the day of the company Christmas party for where I worked at the time. Boss rented a whole room at a country club with a buffet. I had eaten throughout the day already, but that really got some nutrition in me!!

having the discipline to abstain from food in a healthy way to me, seems like as much of a training protocol as jumping under a heavy barbell

That’s a good point. There’s a huge mental component. It’s amazing how much more I can squat when I’m in the zone. And when fasting, there’s a few times I asked myself if I really wanted it that bad!

The answer was yes. I made it.

Your meme took me a second.

This did remind me of I think it’s called the warrior diet? I think that’s it. Basically, the idea is you eat very sparingly most of the day, train, and then eat a huge meal. Most of your calories are centered around that one meal. The theory behind it is that that’s how our ancestors would have eaten. You don’t just wake up to a feast; you gotta hunt it down. So you’d have access to maybe some fruits or seeds to stay fueled up for the hunt, but you don’t feast until you catch something. Keeping calories and blood sugar lower can upregulate norepinephrine and such and put you in a better state to train. That’s part of what got me started with training fasted.

Something I did this time that I’d like to continue is focus on reading more during an extended fast to train my mind. This is what I read this time:

Still killing it. I see the weightloss is sticking nicely too!

How far do you intend to lean up before switching gears and building back up into your 242 frame?

That weight is the same day I broke the fast; I trained in my garage later that evening.

I’m kind of there, mentally. I got the fat off from the last run up the mountain, and then some, even doing a 220 meet. I am getting bloodwork next week to see if I am healthy enough to bump my oil up come may. I would like to be leaner to grow better, but I’m not certain what that costs might actually serve the big picture goal best.

The plan isn’t to try to gain any weight for the sake of it, but rather let my body grow however it intends to in response to just eating what I feel I need to train well. I do not want to force any weight; I can gain about 20-25lbs for now and still make a 242 weighin.

Not sure how much I trust that slinger not to blow on me though: it’s only rated for 225lbs

Looked like a nice productive heavy day. I like the plan of eating what your body needs to train well, and let your body grow into that weight, instead of just trying to force the weight for the sake of just getting heavier. Eating to train will shuttle those nutrients into the muscles you’re training which will not only build a better physique, but also more productive with less fat. It requires patience but healthier and more efficient in the end.💪🏆

Sounds like an excellent plan. You can build up performance, add muscle with a slight surplus, and the oils will help out a lot with new tissue accrual. Then when it is time to compete temporarily push the weight up before the actual meet for better leverages.

That being said, when do you intend to compete again? Some time in the fall, or as far out as next year?

December at the latest. The gym I just competed at has one then and the friend I made is already signed up for it (he is a medic & summer is too busy for him to train seriously).

Quite possibly sooner, but I think I want to take things a bit lower and slower, both drugs and bodyweight. I just want to keep driving steady progress, without taking so much that I get hurt from growing too fast or have to stop the blast because I can’t handle the doses much longer.

I am mentally preparing to climb the mountain, and it cannot be a sprint. I want to go the distance.
