help me quit smokeing

just an update im still smoke free. i dont know why but last nite i kept haveing dreams and i was smoking in them it seemed very real i could smell ,taste and feel the inhale as i smoked them in my dreams. weird huh it was relentless prob had like 5 of those dreams. on another note i still havent got to the coughing fits yet. i hope the coughing fits start soon i want my lung function back......just a question for u guys that quit already do you think if i started a sorry attempt at jogging little by little every day that it would help clear my lungs out? i realize that im not gonna do much at first as far as acutly jogging. but would it help or would it just stress my lungs out when they need to heal and be counter productive?

OH wait a minute you haven't been doing any cardio, man you should be doing cardio, make your lung work. Push them a little the extra push will force you to expel the crap. Right now your lungs aren't screaming to be cleared out, they are going to clear out at there leisure but if you begin activity that tells the body. I NEED OXYGEN AND LOTS OF IT, the body will begin to adapt. One of the adaptations is going to be to tell the cilia (the ones that can move) to start moving out the tar and phlegm. Really I would expect this week to be the one you start coughing a little. Seems week 2-3 was the start of mine.

Either way though even while smoking your lung capacity increases when pushed. Get out there and workout like you want to workout and the body will adapt. Don't wait for perfect physical scenario's to workout or do what you want. Kind of like lifting on and off a supp stack. I know a lot of people that don't put as much effort into thier workouts when not on a stack. Don't be one of those people. Trust me if lung capacity is your goal then yes you should be working to improve it now. Just be ready to be humbled a little bit at the beginning by losing your breathe but don't stop just slow down and walk for 30 seconds and pick the jog back up. Only walk for 30 seconds each time you have to stop. If you need to jog slower the next time you start do so but only walk for 30 seconds at a time to really push your lungs. They will improve quickily whether you start coughing out your phlegm or not.

Does smoking marijuana do the same things to your cilia?

Even moreso, there is not filter to filter out any of the tar or in that case called Resin. If you are a daily pot smoke then you may have something to think about. However if you smoke it only on occasion I would imagine the only issues are legal ones. That and eating too much afterwards. It can be havoc on a persons ability to diet.

On another note marijuana use is also very estrogenic, and can cause issues with fertitlity and exacerbate gyno. Just FYI

Try Skoal.

GICH!

LOL, from lung to lip and throat cancer. Maybe he can replace it with a healthier habit like chinese star catching, or juggling chainsaws.

yeah, except the fact that if you use a tobacco water pipe, you filter alot of carcinogens through the water.

this is why the water smells terrible, and also why the smoke is A LOT less harsh on you ( doesnt have near the burn )

update: still not smoking dont even think about it any more. still no terrible cough. my lungs did hurt after lifting extremely heavy (well extremely heavy for me) did 265 in 3 sets of 8 then a new p.r 335 in a set of 3 got light headed and even seen stars for about a min after the 335 set and my lungs felt like they got over inflated is the only way to describe it i guess

That is more likely the valsalva effect, probably spelling it incorrectly. When you are pushing hard you tend to subconciously hold your breath at moments you are really straining. That creates alot of pressure which shuts the valves in your arteries in your neck, cutting off the blood pressure from the brain to protect it from anhuerism or stroke. This limits or completely stops the flow which of course denies your brain of oxygen. Some people even pass out under the weights from this. Especially in squatting. Of course it could be the exact opposite and you may have hyperventilated, almost the same type of after effects. My bet would be the valsalva effect though.

Congrats on that PR! Those are some damn good weights!

Nice work man. I need to cut out some habits as well. I'm inspired.

when ur ready man go for it start a thread it helps knowing there are a bunch of people your gonna let down (or get bashed by if you fail lol) if you dont stop when u say ur gonna. it was the little extra i needed to push thru! my advise is to mentaly prepare to stop try to give yourself a complex about whatever it is you want to stop doing it prepares you way more than u may think it will

update...still not smoking my breathing is still getting better i think im starting to get the cough everyone told me about coughing up brown crap from time to time mostly in the morning after brushing my teeth (brushing my teeth always makes me gag almost throw up it always has?)that forces a cough every day. i think my sense of smell is getting alot better 2 i can now smell smokers from like 5 feet away even if they have not smoked in quite a while. i still have no desire to smoke. i am sometimes getting light headed for seemingly no reason. i think thats just from getting more air.

keep it up buddy. Soon you'll not even want ppl to smoke around you and then.... you know your cured.

yea i already dont care to have people smoke around me. its hard to belive now that cigs had that much of a hold on me its a terrible thing and you dont see it clear for what it is till u quit.

thats a rough nightmare!!!!

Question for you guys, Ive been an occasional every other day 1 cig kind of guy for a while. Now I finally stopped completely, I need all my lungs capacity for my mma training. HOw long did it take for you guys to start coughin sh%t up and the lungs cleaning themselves? Ive been looking around and there are some cleanses available, mostly herbal based. I dont know how much those would help, maybe someone has any experience with the whole recovery process and how to make it better?

BTW did you guys know that its not even tobacco inside cigs. Look closely. Its paper thats been dipped into the chemicals and then shredded to resemble tobacco. I mean we are being fooled into smoking paper..

that's a theory i havn't heard yet. im pretty sure that isn't true. if u buy tobacco to roll ur self u can tell its real becase its full of sticks and not fully cut leaves and stuff like that! i know because at the end there i was buying that stuff to help me quit and save money.... although im 100 percent sure that the tobacco has been sprayed with multiple chem's to help keep you hooked and for taste to make em burn faster so they dont go out and so you smoke more to buy more

i.m.o 1 cig every other day i dont think you have any build up in ur lungs to cough out your body can filter and clean a certain amount its when you over load (smoke alot)it is when it gets behind and you get build up. now if you were a smoker and cut down to 1 every other day now thats a diff story

well just an update my breathing seem so much better last couple days and if i do get gasses during my workout i am recovering really fast. seems weird to say but it feels as if the upper part of my lungs are opening up. other than the forced cough in the morning i still havent got the really bad cough everyone says is coming. i dont know if that is good or bad? i hope that does not mean my lung are so full crap they havent been able to clean enuf for me to get the cough yet. not real sure but i do know every day i feel a little beter

people always make mention of the coughing up crap thing. after quiting for about 15 years, i only coughed up a little here and there, some of my friends made it sound like buckets would come out, not for me

I'm still here mate - keep pushing through, I think you're past the worst of the cravings, but dont lull yourself into a false sense of security

other than the forced cough in the morning i still havent got the really bad cough everyone says is coming.

i never got that really bad nasty one either. i waited 4 months for the damned thing to show up, but it never did. that pain in your chest is definitely from your lungs clearing up. think of smoking as dumping tar on your driveway. the tar kind of spreads out, but where it was dumped has the most tar. same as when you inhale - if it can collect closest to where its inhaled, it probably will. this part of your lungs are not used to having oxygen probably since you started smoking, so the pain is intense. i felt like i was having a minor heart attack when i quit, upper right lung hurt so bad. i remember gasping for air thinking "oh god i'm going to die." that happened twice.

though i'm not sure if you'll have that weird feeling - i smoked for 12 years, a pack a day, whether it was malboro reds, or a pack of cloves, i got my 20 cigarettes daily.

yea if i breath in real deep i get a pain in my lungs like there being over stretched. i had smoked for about 15 years and started real young like 15 years old. i was pretty stupid! but in my defense my grand parents chain smoked my dad smoked it seem like every one around me smoked. my grampa caught me at 8 years old trying to puff a smoke in the ash tray he told me to try to smoke it ( to deter me from smoking) and i took a hit a inhaled it without coughing. that is how much people around me smoked i had inhaled so much second hand smoke it didnt make me cough. back then there wernt all these campains against second hand smoke. no one ever gave it a second thought. everyone just figured if it wasnt u smoking u were all rite. think about it car rides with 2 chain smokers. winter time windows closed in the house 2 chain smokers and other smokers stoping by. now a days this would be a sin. back then no one would of lifted a brow

i have noticed my thoughts are getting clearer. i think my mind got fuzzy for a while after i quit but it seems to be wearing off and i can think clearer

Good job mcssassin. Quitting is a bitch, but so very worth it. I too noticed a clear head when I quit, plus better sleep, endurance, smell, taste, strength, muscle gain, and even libido. The light headedness is indeed your brain getting more oxygen. Smoker's blood is thought to be 85% as functional as a non-smoker, so your blood is now carrying more life-giving oxygen. I kind of enjoyed the dizzy feeling in a way. I just thought of it as a rush of positive energy. If it bothers you don't worry, it will pass.

well no change fellas the only thing thats weird now is i just started school the other day and on breaks alot of people go to smoke like i would of before. now i have to learn what to do with my time in situations like that.

this is the biggest problem for me. when i open at work, i find myself smoking tons because there isnt anything to do. but when i close or run out of cigs for a day or two im fine.

yea there is a social dynamic to it to that i didnt consider. i was laid off when i quit i wasnt is any situation where i had to break a social pattern in order to stop smoking.like talking to new people on breaks(non smokers) i guess smoking can become sort of a comfort zone on a few levels......think about this have you ever noticed at work if a smoker sneaks outside to smoke for ten mins you dont think twice about it but if a nonsmoker goes and sits down in the break room 15 feet away from the smoker for ten mins you think to your self what a lazy peice of crap...its true lol

Haha yeah at work we have to cover for this guy who takes 3-6 smoke breaks a shift and some days we don't even get a break of our own...It's ridic.

update: still clean no smoking. feel good, breathing good,no bad cough yet. sense of smell is back 100% lungs feel tight every morning. i think thats them healing. thats all for now.

I still keep gobstoppers at my desk and in my car. you can eat quite a few of them and it's still better than smoking. one thing that helped was, remember that the craving lasts about 5 minutes....so when i would get the craving, i would look at my clock or watch and know that in 5 minutes all would be over.

I completely Agrees with Lennoxchi that is what i do is keep gobstoppers whever i would usually smoke then i would just suck on a stopper till the craving went away. You will feel like a new person after a couple weeks of not smoking.

sigh i folded have to start again... i passed a class as i was going back to school and i made the deans list and was handed a cigar(sigh) and i smoked id figuring no big deal and bought a pack the same day...lesson to anyone reading this... if your done your done! just one is not ok

Damn, man this sucks.
Here's my advice to you...
Physical cravings are only 10%, the rest is mental. Try hypnotherapy to get rid of mental cravings otherwise you'll crave cigarettes for years to come.
