Can an old man get huge?

I found the same with Epi - I didn't really gain much mass, but did lean out some. I am using P-Mag right now, and I really like it so far (just starting week 3). I have been pulsing, but maybe gains would be better with a straight cycle. I will have to try epi again when dieting to see what it does for me - didn't really diet or do cardio the last time.

Pretty much, what I want to see is opinions if a 35-40-45-50 year old with a decent foundation can get HUGE with the right training/diet/drugs/supplements.

I see old guys who are kinda big, and old guys who are ripped and old guys who are in good shape, but can one get huge, I mean really huge at that stage of life?

Before anybody takes offense, I fall into the above mentioned age categories, and only use the term "old" to distinguish the parameters of my question.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bottom line, of course you can if you're willing to mess around with anabolic products. I am 60 years old and feel like I’m 30. Many people tell me that I'm the youngest 60 year old they have ever seen. I still play softball and basketball with the kids and hold my own quite well. I play competitive table tennis and compete in tournaments from time to time. I lift weights three times a week, ride bikes and jog regularly and in general I enjoy and active life style. I have gone from 148 lbs to 185 lbs in about 20 years of lifting. I did mess around with prohormones about ten years ago but I am currently happy to just stay in shape. At my age I use test boosters continuously. I rotate several so that my body doesn’t become accustomed to the ingredients. My three favorites are Primal Male, DTHC and more recently Formadrol. All three have some form of estrogen control (critical for us older folks) and work on different pathways so they can be rotated effectively. I am currently experimenting with TestoPro and I want to try Mydrol in the near future. I usually buy two bottles at a time and when it is gone I move on to the next booster. I am not Arnold but I feel great, no aches or pains. The only aging issue I have personally experienced is loss of energy as compared to when I was younger. I often rely on energy enhancers to keep going. I am currently experimenting with GPLC for a natural energy boost and it seems to be working quite well so far. Hang in here and don’t get hung-up on getting big. There is a lot to be said for controlling your waist line and staying in good shape. I always make sure my abs look good otherwise I need to lose some weight. Never let age be an excuse for not doing the things you love. Give God the glory in everything you and he will bless you for it.

Good post, I have done pretty well with herbals and will give a lot of thought before I go any further. If I think it's safe and does not seriously damage my very strong HPTA then maybe. Lean and hard are more important to me at my age and I do have a lot of size already.

When I was messing with prohormones I never felt quite right (difficult to explain) but I always feel great on herbal test boosters. I think it's partly because I know I'm taking products that are good for me as opposed to something that has detrimental side effects and also because a good herbal will balance my hormones similar to when I was younger so I actually feel like I did when I was younger.

PHs always messed up my libido after 4 weeks. At first the libido boost was great, but then it was like I didn't care about sex towards the end of the cycle and my girlfriend was never too happy about that.

I think Epi helped me hold muscle as I was dieting. I never bulked on it. I was able to get shredded using it along with cardio. It definitely increased my strength levels. I never took more than 30mg a day for more than 4 weeks.

If Epi is used for too long without proper PCT it could put someone over the edge and mess up their HPTA. This happens to guys in their 20s and 30s, so I think it's possible.

Using real gear would have less issues with your liver than alkalized PHs/
Mac,
What was did your PCT look like?

I never thought so, but recently watching my body transform after years of neglect is amazing. I am 35 and hadn't lifted in years. It's safe to say that every gain I had made in the past had passed and was replaced a 35bf%. Im 3 years deep into my transformation and have picked up a great deal of mazz. I wouldn't say muscle memory really had much to do with it as much as my overall experience & BB knowledge. Im no where near my dream physic or goals but Im busting my azz & clawing my way there. Every work out is gut wrenching. I work each bodypart twice per week over a 4 day split. 2, off, 2 off, off. 3 sets & 3-4 exercises (FST-7, drop sets, High Volume WO, Extremely Low Volume WO, Supper Sets, Giant Sets). I do this for many reasons and Its really been my secret weapon theory. I cycle on and off of PHs year around. I use a variation of supps and get most of my nutrients/ protein from whole foods. At my age protein powders give me the runs (LOL). Thats my story guys

You're only 35? That's not old, damn I could add a lot of muscle with just diet at that age.

well bro Im 59 and been lifting half my life and Im 340 pounds of solid mass and I get bigger every yr so yes with the right amount of food and lifting heavy you can still get huge.

You look like and endo. Endo's gain quite easily. I started out as an ecto but I am closer to a meso after gaining about 25 lbs. At this point, even with a clean diet, I tend to gain around the midsection before I make gains anywhere else. Keep my test elevated helps but it is not the total answer.

I'm 44, 45 in Jan. I've been pretty active for my entire life, including working out in the gym, but never seriously. Anyway, I started doing squats and deadlifts in July, this week I deadlifted 335 and squatted 315.

Not sure about "huge", still gunning for that myself, but I can tell you a couple things; 1 year ago I weighed 165, this week I'm around 180, and, I no longer fit into medium anything. I'm certainly bigger than I've ever been, probably stronger too.

And yeah, it's all about "diet", (as long as that diet includes aas).

Of course, the limiting factor is what a person can lift. You can't get big unless you lift big, no matter how old (or young) you are or what drugs you take. To anyone that's over 35, that to me represents the biggest challenge. When you lift big there's going to be pain, to me that's probably what stops most.

I turn 51 this December and only really started lifting seriously last year in December after 15+ years of ultra-running which I was getting bored with. I’ve always considered myself a “hardgainer” ectomorph (I now realize I was an under-eater and poor trainer) and weighed only 113 lbs. when I joined the Marine Corps in 1982. 11 months ago I weighed 145 lbs. at 5’6” and after 7 months doing an HST style (followed the principles but didn’t like the vanilla routine) program I’d gained 30 lbs. up to 175 lbs. I spent some time cutting down to 165 and am trying to “slow” bulk now.

Since after cutting I became sort of goalless I searched around and 5 weeks ago decided to try out a Westside Barbell routine and totally loving it (I like to plan, think and tweak). My lifts are 230 lbs. bench press @ 165, 350 lbs. squat @ 168 and 350 lbs. deadlift @ 168.

For the first time in my life had to upgrade to large T-shirts since the mediums were making every day look like “Tight-T-shirt-Tuesday.” My 32” jeans still fit in the waist but are now starting to rub the hair off the front of my upper legs.

No PH use and only limited supplement use so far but I’ve been doing a lot of reading here.

I’m certainly not “huge” but at nearly 51 I think I’m doing pretty well. My goal is to eventually get to 185-190 @ 10% BF.

That's an super goal at 51 and 5'6". I'm trying for 190-195 at 63 and 12%- 13%BF. I'm going down to 185 first, then will lean bulk up 10 to 15 pounds. After I'll lose what's necessary to get BF down to good levels. I'm 5'10" though. In my later 40's I was 201 pounds and 12.5% BF.

BTW, I was heavily into running for about 5 years, and did do a 50k at the age of 34. I trained 70-80 miles per week for the 12 weeks before, and I hurt my left foot with 8k remaining in race, but managed to slowly jog, walk, and hobble through the finish 13 minutes past my goal. My weight was 156 pounds then.

Looks like you have a good goal. I hope mine is realistic. I based it on doing one of the online calculators where you plug in your wrist and ankle measurements. I’ve got a small frame so I gave myself a range to shoot for since getting there all natural might be a challenge. I may try PH at some point but I feel I have a lot of natural growth potential left to use first.

What made you switch from running to lifting? Besides getting bored I also switched because I realized I wasn’t getting any younger and the longer I waited to build up some muscle the harder it would be.
I’ve always thought that it sucked to have a small frame but one nice thing about starting out small was that adding muscle shows a lot more on my frame than it would on a larger person. That’s lead to lots of positive feedback as people who only see me occasionally are pretty shocked at how “big” (big being relative) I’ve gotten. However, I think most of the easy gains are behind me so now it’s going to be more of a grind.

grunt,

I think your goals realistic, but difficult. And yep, big is relative.

That foot injury with the 50k was bad, and it took a year on non-running to heal. I got back into running for about two more years after that and received a severe back strain that knocked me out again just as I was back to my top capabilities. I tried to recover the second time, but it was taking forever, so in my later 30's I took up weight lifting which I had done as a teen. I keep my endurance fairly strong by bicycling and stationary cycling even today. Some of the endurance tricks help weight training too, and having excellent endurance will accelerate your abilities by a great deal. Doing 5x5 training for strength is good also. Westside is powerlifting rather than bodybuilding style, and I like that direction too.

You can use various test boosters, and anti-estrogens at low doses, and add stinging nettle root extract to free up the testosterone you have to help. If you become good at these, and change them up every 6 weeks or so, they help a lot. These are natural as they don't use external hormones and just boost your own. You can also use creatine (all kinds work) or just eat a lot of beef to get it in your diet.

I only just started doing endurance work again since I had stopped altogether to bulk (old “hardgainers” mindset) which I realize now was a mistake. I started doing hill sprints about a month ago and they are making a real difference. I’m probably also going to get a heavy bag and start working with that though I don’t see a lot of people recommending that for GPP it sure takes the wind out of me.

I considered 5x5 and 5/3/1, especially 5/3/1 but decided to try Westside because it incorporates more types of training and a greater need to focus on what each exercises is really doing for you. So even though I won’t bulk as fast on Westside as continuing HST or some other programs I felt it was a good idea to take a step back and try to learn more about what does and doesn’t work for me so I can better apply that over the next few years rather than just blindly follow a routine set up by someone else. One thing I’ve already learned is that to get the most out of my training I need to tailor it to my needs, probably more so than someone younger, who has more energy and recovery ability.

I have been taking creatine and looking into various other supplements which was one of the main things that got me reading this forum so thanks for the advice.

grunt,

You've already got 2 major things going for you. 1) Most people never quite get their head around lifting heavy weights, and 2/3 of those who do are not very smart about it (a lot of one and two reps macho show off guys stop getting results pretty quick.) 2) You do have ENERGY, and big time, from all those years as an ultra-runner.

Recovery time does decline with age, but less so if your hormones are in good balance. Sleep and HGH levels are two important factors in recover. Anti-stress supplements can help for recovery too. Adrenal fatigue, cortisol production, and even CNS stress (central nervous system) can slow or even halt progress. The CNS stress is particularly applicable to people hitting very heavy weights. you have to cycle the heavy lifting to overcome bad CNS overload.

I started taking my Beta-Alanine because it worked so well along with my Creatine in improving my recovery during workouts. That was how I actually stumbled on its other great properties eg eyesight, longevity etc. At my age at least, I find it really helps to take whatever time I want between sets. If it's 3,4,5 minutes I don't care. Lifting heavy is my driver and I want to be my most rested and agressive when I do. I also swear by my 8 day week which allows me to do 4 splits followed by a core/cardio day as needed.

They promote beta alanine as just an endurance supplement, but I noticed the quicker recovery too when I used it for a couple of years. Due to the recent discussions I'm back to using it at 4-5 grams per day.

I take plenty of time between sets with the heavy lifting too. As you get older that's absolutely necessary. I'm going to experiment with some Dragon Herbs, Duanwood Reishi supplements. They're expensive, but I've always wanted to give a high quality Reishi Mushrooms a try.

Thanks for the advice. I picked up some beta alanine and used it for the first time today. I felt a sort of tingling sensation part way into my ME upper body workout. I’m not sure if this early it’s just placebo but I felt my muscles had a lot more energy than usual for the first workout after a planned week off. Usually the first workout feels a little rough.

I also take all the time I need between Max Effort sets but for Supplemental and Repetition exercises I use Myo-reps, a form of clustering, so I only take off the time needed to complete the next cluster set. I feel I get more quality work from fewer total reps doing this rather than using a traditional set/rep scheme.

great thread, I'm 37 (just turned) and trying to get back into it now. This is a good motivation thread.

As you probably already know it only takes about 4-6 years to get in fantastic shape at your age if you do the right things, and that's if you're just beginning again. I got in good shape by 47 after 5 years. I weighed 201 and could bench 415 raw and had leg strength to match. It included 6 pack abs and all. Then I proceeded to let it all go for several years after my 49 birthday. I worked long hours at sedentary jobs.

Well I turn 41 in a couple of weeks.
Couldn't be happier, 22 years training on & off, has given me results I wanted.
All I need do now is maintain

Don’t worry, I’m not starting a log here I just thought that it might be worth it to some people to see what one drug free 50 year old was able to do in his first year of training, which just ended yesterday. The number after the “+” is the change in one year.

Height 5’6”
Wrist Measurement 6.75”
Ankle Measurement 8.5”

Bench Press 235 lbs. +120 lbs.
Squat 355 lbs. +220 lbs.
Deadlift 350lbs. +215 lbs.
Body Weight 172 lbs. +23 lbs.
BF % 13 +5%
Chest 42 +6.5”
Upper Arms (relaxed/flexed) 12.75”/14.75” +1.25”
Lower Arms (relaxed/flexed) 11.25”/11.75” +1”
Neck 16” 1.5”
Thighs 23” +2
Calves 14.25” +.5”
Hips 38” +2”
Shoulders 48” +3.5”
Waist 31.5 +3.5”

Well so much for the newbie gains, now I guess it gets hard.

For the first 7 months I followed an HST style workout. Then I cut for about 1 month and became sort of aimless for about 2 months. For the last 2 months I’ve been more focused, primarily on powerlifting, by experimenting with Westside Barbell’s conjugate training method. While brutal I’ve learned more about what works for me in the last 2 months than in the previous 10.

The only injuries I’ve had are a class one strain in my hamstring the first month and on/off again tendonitis in my forearms for the last 6 months. One major scare when I blew the roller out of the buckle on my weightlifting belt while doing squats. I now have a real powerlifting belt.

I started training again at 43, good diet, hard training and running some gear helped me make some substantial gains! It's never too late, but you should always do your research, train carefully and diet properly.

Do Work!

Hi all. I'm now 38 and have been training since I was 18. For those twenty years I have trained mostly natural although in my twenties I did two 12-week cycles of primo, which I regret now as my test levels then were probably high enough not to need roids. I started at a bodyweight of 130lbs and am now 200lbs. My bodyfat level isn't the best but I mostly stick to powerlifting with little cardio.

This year I benched 352lbs which is my PB. My lifetime goal is to bench 400lbs, but its slow going now - my PB a year ago was 340. I've had lots of injuries over the years and had to take months off here and there. I also suffer from fatigue (mild ME), and can't push myself as hard as I'd like. I'm happy tho that I've seen my strength and size increase every year, even if my energy levels have decreased. Perhaps I need to do more cardio and less strength training.

My diet is pretty decent, all natural food with a daily protein shake. I've wondered about taking natural test boosters, I've read different opinions about them and wouldn't want to waste my money if they won't work. I've also considered trying an epi pulse cycle to see if I can get closer to that 400 bench without doing too much damage to my natural levels and health.

One thing I know is that training is part of my life and no matter whether I get bigger or not, I'll keep training until it's no longer physically possible for me to lift a weight!

If you can, with the M.E., find a way to incorporate cardio. I made the mistake of dropping all cardio to gain weight a year ago. About 3 months ago I switched from bodybuilding to powerlifting and started doing hill sprints as a form of active recovery and GPP. It’s made a huge difference I how healthy I feel and seems to have improved my workouts by giving me more energy.

Things are finally moving along again since I went on HRT since my free test was only 66. All my powerlifts are going up again including my Bench where I had lost ground for months due to a shoulder impingement.

Well if you add up the total of my best powerlifts I finally hit 1000 lbs. this week. I know it really doesn’t count since I didn’t do all the lifts the same day as in a competition but I’m getting closer to being able to do that. I had set a goal for myself that I would enter my first competition once I felt I could get a 1000 lbs. total so I’m going to start looking for a local competition I can enter a few months after I get back from my upcoming deployment.

On a hypertrophy note I must be getting noticeably bigger. In the last three weeks I’ve gotten more comments than I can count. One supervisor started calling me “muscle man.” Another commented I should get bigger pants since my “A$$” is too big for the current ones, and these are my “FAT” pants. Another coworker commented on how “jacked” I looked.

Add to that I had to wear my dress uniform (fitted when I weighed 165 about 9 years ago) and it was a chore. I couldn’t button the collar and had to hide that with my tie since I didn’t have one of those button extenders. My thighs barely fit in the pants and were so tight that you couldn’t see the crease where they were ironed. Luckily there was a table between me and the board members so that wasn’t obvious. On the plus side I forced me to sit up very straight since the coat was pretty tight. Also work related I just had to buy a new utility blouse since I almost couldn’t button the ones I have.

However, the most motivating thing that happened was when I stopped at Wallyworld (Wal Mart) on the way home from work last Wednesday after switching back into my workout shorts and tank top. Within 2 minutes of walking in the door I already lost count of how many women/girls did double takes or just outright eyef**ked me. That’s sure as hell never happened before. Kind of disturbing though was a few of the girls were IMO a little too young to be showing that sort of interest. Changing times. . . .

For me the joints are vulnerable. I know I can easily go heavier, but my joints won't cooperate. Muscles tear easier, so be careful. But "huge?" Bigger, yes, but huge is debatable.

i was 155,17 months ago, great shape,cut,ect..but 155 is 155. i had worked out with out iron for a couple yrs. started to hit the gym. im mid way on my 3rd cycle and at 190lbs today. at 10% bf. huge...no but at 5'6" and 44 yrs old im headed there....lol the gear didn't make me but it did enhance every thing.

i just started my first cycle today and am going to track my progress on this thread. i ran out of supplements the last week or so and just got back to protein shakes this week. felt alittle lathargic in the mornings i hope it is temporary . my workout today was great , heart pumping sweating just like i like them. got a good pump going really have missed the feeling. I'll be 51 in two months and i hoped to be ripped by Christmas. Grunt i wouldn't mind geting a few looks in the future but i know what ya mean. young is young, but old a'int exactly old anymore. Hoorah, 11b!

Glad to hear things are going so well!

Thanks, it’s working great so far and I’m only halfway 413 to the 700-800 they want me at.

To add to my previous post I had to upgrade to XL T-shirts today since the larges I bought about 4 months ago are getting way to tight around my shoulders and chest so I’m getting no air flow to keep cool. I also had to buy a new utility uniform shirt since I almost cant’ button the ones I have right now. I ended up getting a 44 short but would have gotten a 46 to future-proof myself but they didn’t have any 46-short and the regular was just too long (getting thicker just not taller ;)).
