Christian Bale Goes ApeSh*t on Terminator 4 set

In the course of production for the new T4, the film's Director of Photography attempted to adjust the lighting while Bale was filming a scene and Bale unleashed on the unsuspecting crew member while the sound was still recording.

 
I heard quite a bit of this tirade today, and I would say that Mr. Bale made some extremely valid points. He's a method actor, and spends ridiculous amounts of time and energy preparing for his scenes...once film is rolling, nobody does JACK - especially something serious to completely break the lead actors concentrations.

While his language was WAY over the top, I feel like this a lot in today's society full of braindead idiots.

From what I understand, he also later apologized for his tone and they both are cool with it.

i hear ya on that, i think what's taken people by surprise with this, is that he's regarded as a nice guy.

i say, don't f*ck with a man who's deep in character as bale is for T4, it's an intense role for what looks like an intense movie. i hope T4 is the goods as T3 definitly sucked ass

As someone who does this for a living, you are correct and I completely argree. HOWEVER,.. there was a bit of BITCH in his tone. HE's also going through some other public legal drama with some family. I dunno, I like some of his work but he seems like a douche-bag actor, type.

Nobody says he isn't also a spoiled prima donna, but I can't imagine what that kind of all consuming dedication to your art must do to your personality and ability to remain "normal."


/not to mention that insane morning personal hygeine regimen.

Another day in the life if you ask me. In all honesty, it's one of those situations that is water under a bridge for these people. Stress brings out the worst in people, but it's not always as bad as it seems from the outside looking in. Guys are guys. We'll tell you what an asshole you are, and maybe throw a few punches in the process, but at the end of the day, we're buying each other a drink.

I hope to god this is better than T3 as well. I'm still very partial to T1 :cue drums:.....:D

I agree with what most are saying, but after about 2 mins, Bale needs to STFU and either get back to work or take a minute. After awhile it just as unprofessional to act the way he did after a certain amount of time.
 
Exactly! But the DP wouldn't shut up and I think it was pissing Bale off even more. He acted unprofessional while pointing out how unprofessional the DP was. I'm so sick of production! Uggggh!

He asked him to explain himself, then interupted him. which i cant say wasnt deserved. Director should of handled the situation, but Im not amovie guy, I know you have more experience than i do, i remember you mentioning something in one of your previous post about this type of work.
 
imo!..everyone deserves the same amount of respect,weather or not there the star of the show!..i think he tried to use his star status as a cruch to rip this dude.i mean how many times do you see the bloopers,they always fok up,and they just shoot it again.simple case of,im the star and thats it!..bale imo!..was an a$$hole for reacting the way he did.the other dude got my respect for humbling himself and apologizing for what he have done,i would have waited till shooting was over,and caught that mofo on the out's!.."you wanna see my mask"..LOL..

What else I think is funny, is this ass hat gets paid to pretend. PAID TO PRETEND AND MAKE BELIEVE like my 4 year old niece does! I would have egged the dumb ass on.

Don't get me wrong, that fuckwad should have had his ass handed to him. But he shouldn't have been shouted out like that in front of the crew, though. Maybe it would have been palatable to me if Bale wasn't so emotional and bitchy about it. Like if he just called the guy on being a jerkoff and screwing up the shot. That, I could see.

I think it's getting blown out of the water, truthfully. Bale isn't some cracked-out, POS actor - the guy is good. If he feels someone took him out of character, then fire away.
He is one of few actors that I actually like.

IMO Christian Bale is one of the most over rated actors in Hollywood. The only movie I really liked with him in it was American Psycho.

I disagree....eliminating ****-ness from the equation, I would consider him near the top of the talent tree. Continuing on, he could approach the level of ANthony Hopkins or Richard Burton.

you can tell that he dedicates his entire being and passion-pool to his art, not only while he works but throughout is existence....which tends to cut one off from the normal releases available to everyone else.

His acting IS his outlet.

While I somewhat agree with you, it just seems as though he is too much of a "try hard". Know what I mean?
 
If Bale is the most overrated, Phillip-Seymour Hoffman is the most underrated. He is most likely the best actor in Hollywood - compelling in all his performances.
 
He's good but I don't find him that great. He reminds me of the actor that Robert Downey Jr. played in Tropic Thunder.

I understand you 'are' your character but c'mon man! Enough is enough :)

Robert Downey Jr., is a phenomenal actor as well. If you are into old Film Noire and 'Who Dun' it Flicks' Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a great homage [kiss-kiss bang-bang is a reference to 50's style-detective movies, where a plot is intertwined with a love interest].
 
It just irks me that he admits the guy to being a nice person and who's obviously trying to do his job but still tries to publicly make him look like an idiot for over 3 minutes when it was apparent that everyone understood the concern is just an ******* move on Bale's part. It sucks when you have to put up with those types of people and their actions because of who they are but it doesn't make it any more 'right' regardless of his acting abilites.

These guys aren't union? It seems he was indirectly told he was fired. Something along the lines of "I'm not continuing to work as long as he works here". Holding someone's job over their head as a means to berate them in public is just as ****ed up as what he ended up doing.

If Bale would of fired this guy he would of easily got work back in the industry if he had proven to be a good DP in the past and if Bale proved to be a **** on other sets. You can still correct and administer punishment to an individual without publicly humiliating them. If this guy was a complete idiot then they were at fault for not previously letting him go and if this was also known prior to this incident it still doesn't excuse his actions because he was already aware of him being an idiot.

and IMHO Bales behavior, regardless of profession, in-character, out-of-character, is unacceptable. Were I the errant individual I would have enjoyed telling Bale to GFH in front of everyone. As well invited him to kick my ass :laugh:
 
I'm pretty calm until someone does exactly what Bale did. Then all rationale, common sense and professionalism go out of the window(when not in uniform). On the street I would of tried to stomp a hole in his head but had I been in this guy's position and had a family to support i probably would of acted the same way he did unless I was having a bad day as well.
 
I would not resort to violence because it is not really in me - whether physically capable or not is another matter. I would have much rather had the pleasure of returning the verbal humiliation, which likely would have set Bale off and then of course I would have had to defend myself.

First of all, it sounds like this guy has walked on set at least ONCE before doing it again this time - and who knows how many other "rules" he's disregarded. Walking on set while the scene is being shot is THE FIRST rule you learn - and is learned when making simple student films. This is not Bale complaining that the DP couldn't keep up with focus or any other technical issue - it's a very basic rule that should never be broken. In the realm of "common sense", I put it akin to:

1. do not jump in front of a moving bus
2. do not go in front of a person aiming a loaded gun
3. do not walk in the middle of set when the camera is rolling and the actors are performing

4. do NOT tickle me or kick my knees in when I'm attempting a personal best on squat

- these are all really off the chart/should be common sense situations. To have been reprimanded for doing it once, then REPEATING it is completely inexcusable, and disrespectful.

It is a very high stress environment at times, and seconds can cost thousands of $$$. I've seen a stand in actor lose her job because she was in the bathroom when they called for her - that was 30 seconds too long.

Actors are paid to explore extreme heightened emotions at time. It's not an easy thing to repeat over and over and it can spill over into real life. Bale could have been imagining the death of his wife and kids while he poured his heart out for everyone to see, then some idiot comes along again and ruins the whole take. Of course an actor would still be in the same emotional moment he was in the scene - and that can often be extreme. We're not talking about putting the wrong item on the shelf in Walmart here...

Again, just imagine everyone watching you and counting on you to make a PR on a lift, then someone pushes you AGAIN in the middle of it. I'm completely siding with Bale on this one. A lot of people don't know what it's like on set - and just because Bale makes a lot of money doesn't make certain things any easier for him - he still puts it all on the line.

How does any of the above justify or make acceptable one man verbally assaulting and humiliating and physically threatening an other in a 5 minute tantrum.

My job is important. My job has a lot of money on the line. My job is very stressful. Many people depend upon me to do my job. I could lose my job if I fail to perform at a moments notice. WTF is Christian Bale that he is better than me or anyone?

The guy does not preform or hinders others performance or safety - you fire him. End of story.

I understand this may be inexcusable
I don't get the fact that a person has to treat another person this way outside of a life and death situation. If lives were on the line I would understood an outburst and a bunch of profanity but there's a point where your point is made and you move the hell on. After a while it sounds like he's being fueled by his own yelling to continue on.
 
I can understand that there's some validity to the "You don't know the craft" argument. Sometimes you just don't know until you've done the job but there are a lot of people in high risk jobs where this type of outburst isn't acceptable. Police and Fire fighters are two such professions where the stress is high and actions are accountable. I've had guys on my firing line point a loaded weapon with the hammer back straight at me and you can believe that thay were yelled at and plenty of sear words followed. However, those moments only lasted a few seconds and I didn't walk off and come back to give out more. In one situation it happened twice by the same person. that person was removed from my firing line and their weapon was taken from them.

If this guy was a repeaded offender then you still have ways of dealing with this without a 3 minute rage session.
