I want to buy a pitbull this year. Advice? I want it for mainly for protection. I am also trying to have a baby. What kind do you like and why?
I hear you. I want a puppy. I will look, but I really want a pit puppy.Get one from a shelter
Understandable. My friend used to foster pitbulls. There are ALOT of young ones in the program too. Just so you know.I hear you. I want a puppy. I will look, but I really want a pit puppy.
Dogs arent vicious by breed. Just like people arent vicious based upon race.get a male and make sure you can see the parents.
why do you want one when you are trying to have a baby? There was a pit in the news a month or so back that ate a lil baby....
not vicious but aggressive by breed i think yes.Dogs arent vicious by breed. Just like people arent vicious based upon race.
Something like 20-30% of dogs in shelters are purebreds... shouldnt be too hard finding one if you look around.
I will never get a dog from a breeder... most 'purebreds' are incestuously bred with their parent, sibling, etc... this makes them more prone to health issues and genetic defects. There are more than enough good dogs in shelters looking for a home. Puppies too.
exactly my point. No matter how sweet, any dog will have a bad day. If a shitzu bites another dog its not a gid deal but if a pit bites another dog prepare to be sued. or heavan forbid a humanOne of my good friends has two pits. Both of them are complete sweethearts. I have seen them get into a fight with each other, though. Not pretty.
you actually took ,move to a better neighborhood seriously.maybe he wants a real dog!do you know what one looks like, just take little gander at my avatar and you'll see one!a dog dont make a bad dog,bad owners do!or owners that dont know what there doing at least!..you must raise a pitbull from a very young age! im talking, when there eyes havnt' yet opened!.this will increase there trust in you,and the closness, when raised from such a small pup!..sure every dog has its day, but who doesnt, they say a dog is a mirror image of its owner, i can imagine if you own a chihuahua!:whip:I don't understand why people enjoy owning such a powerfull dog. Does it make you feel big or something? Why would you acquire sucha huge liabilty as far as law suits and suff? Do you people have insecurity issues? Of course someone is gonna say they are not naturally mean or aggressive. But All dogs are like that. So why a pit? Not trying to be rude, just really want to know.
And owning a dog for protection is not that bright. A guy with a gun will shoot it. You should be getting a dog for a companion to be a part of the family. A much batter idea would be to get an alarm system or like said before move to a better neighborhood. the alarm system should reduce your insurancew costs and will improve the value of your home.
Let's just say one of them is missing an ear now. I was assured by the owner they were just "playing" though. I wouldn't want one with in 100 yards of my newborn, or even a kid under say 15.exactly my point. No matter how sweet, any dog will have a bad day. i think you missed the point of my post entirely. I was not saying they are bad dogs. I am just saying if you play with fire you will eventually get burned. Owning such a powerfull animal and believing that you have total mind control over it is not bright. Take Ruggers story for example. Pretend that was a neighbors dog or child and the story is catastrophic fort alot of people.you actually took ,move to a better neighborhood seriously.maybe he wants a real dog!do you know what one looks like, just take little gander at my avatar and you'll see one!a dog dont make a bad dog,bad owners do!or owners that dont know what there doing at least!..you must raise a pitbull from a very young age! im talking, when there eyes havnt' yet opened!.this will increase there trust in you,and the closness, when raised from such a small pup!..sure every dog has its day, but who doesnt, they say a dog is a mirror image of its owner, i can imagine if you own a chihuahua!:whip:
I plan on getting a Mastiff later this year... fully grown they can be 150++ lbs. Why a big dog? Well partly for protection as well.I don't understand why people enjoy owning such a powerfull dog. I have 2 dogs that weight about 80 lbs. They have deep barks and people don't **** with them if they are barking at them. I understand the idea of having them partially for protection.I plan on getting a Mastiff later this year... fully grown they can be 150++ lbs. Why a big dog? Well partly for protection as well.
I travel a lot and my gf is home alone. A 25lb dog will never bark the same way as a 100+lb dog. Plus its the visual intimidation factor. My girl has been harassed while walking her 20lb dog.. I highly doubt anyone would come near her if she were walking a Mastiff. They are extremely loyal and very protective of their families, but more prone to knock someone down than to bite.
You can break into a house no matter how good the neighborhood is... you can even bypass alarms... but if you see a big dog... your going to think twice

shet's real. Earl Simmons!i love pitbulls, even more loyal then some of the best friends you will ever have!..they will lay down there life for you!..i was raised up with them, and each one of them that i have outlived, has a special place in my heart till today!:drunk:
I know a few people who have them, they arent good around kids. They have a tendency to attack babies/small children. One guy found out the hard way, now his 8 month old has 2big punture wounds on his armI want to buy a pitbull this year. Advice? I want it for mainly for protection. I am also trying to have a baby. Alright rambo.....useful to have your barrel ready pointing and the right direction to wait till the mark jumps in the kill zone....ehh....to defend yourself lawfully against intruders......:whip:
Oh...that's right...you hate guns....and self defense...my bad.....:frustrateAlright rambo.....
Thats true though, chipanzees will actually eat chimpanzee babies, too show dominance, and sometimes just because food in scarce.
Chimpanzees eat human babies too....they look like prey, a good meal, so they get bit/eaten......same problem with wolf hybrids....
Personally, I'd go with a Doberman, Rottweiler or German Sheppard.
Owned a German Sheppard....and looking to get another one.
I'd also suggest a trainer, other than the basic things(sit, Toilet training, etc...) you have to have an attack/kill command.
Oh and to one of the posters above, I have guns in my house, why not a dog and guns ? a dog can be trained to alert without barking......useful to have your barrel ready pointing and the right direction to wait till the mark jumps in the kill zone....ehh....to defend yourself lawfully against intruders......:whip:
Yeah, something like that, a little more aggressive and biting at better places......if you command your dog to attack or kill someone, well at least I, it's done for a good reason, self defense is not illegal last time I checked.I would recommend AGAINST training for 'protection', esp. having an 'attack or kill' command. If your dog bites someone and they have had that training, you will be screwed.
Protection dogs require A LOT of training and you must be consistent. If I were to go down the 'protection' road, I would purchase a dog from a reputable breeder/trainer. It would not be a puppy, but a 1+ yo that has had extensive bite training. At that point, they are a lethal weapon. Even police dogs have been put down due to them biting their handlers family members. It is a huge liability to have a protection trained dog. It's one thing for a dog to bite, but its another to try and defend yourself from a lawsuit when you TRAINED your dog to bite.
Most large breed dogs in that class (GSD, Pit, Mastiff, Malinois, etc.) are enough of a deterrent for most people. They are smart enough to know when their bonded owner is in trouble and do not need 'encouragement' to defend them.
Is this really what you need?
If so, get involved with a local Schutzhund club.
Yeah, something like that, a little more aggressive and biting at better places......if you command your dog to attack or kill someone, well at least I, it's done for a good reason, self defense is not illegal last time I checked.
Sadly, I don't see it being legal much longer.Yeah, something like that, a little more aggressive and biting at better places......if you command your dog to attack or kill someone, well at least I, it's done for a good reason, self defense is not illegal last time I checked.
and what do you think there doing with vicks other dogs,yep!..finding loving homes for them!..oh! yes homes with children, with old ladies, with your neighbor possibly!..pittbulls just get a bad rep!..for the few that do cause harm!..Pit bulls are a funny breed, as they were forced into media headlights by Vick, and him fighting them, and by the poor baby who was bit by one. But as all people who own pits know they are bad dogs, and bad owners. And in most cases when a pit attacks its because the pit has not been socialized. As far as the myth of them beng protective thats just bullshyte, as long as you feed them and pay them attention they will be anybodys friend. Thats why if you want them to not be friendly you have to keep them unsocialized, and then they will be a stir crazy dog. If you want a pit go to a shelter, and also invest in a good pit breed book that tells you about your dog breed.
BUT on the other hand if you want a real protective dog that does not need to be taught how to be protective like a pit would have to. Then get a mastiff- the three breeds i would suggest to you is the Bullmastiff, the Cane Corso, and the English Mastiff, and if you want a hulking dog that takes no shyte from anybody then get a Boerboel or better yet a Fila Brasilero. Those 2 can get over 200lbs and trust me their bite is way worse than their bark. With those dogs they know who is a threat, and will not let anything happen to you or your family.
Overall you have to socialize and train your dog so it can be the type of dog that will please you, as thats what they live for, besides treats and belly rubs.
Presa Canario's are good too!Pit bulls are a funny breed, as they were forced into media headlights by Vick, and him fighting them, and by the poor baby who was bit by one. Thats why if you want them to not be friendly you have to keep them unsocialized, and then they can become stir crazy dogs. If you want a pit go to a shelter, and also invest in a good book that gives you the nuts and bolts on traing your pit, as well as how to live with one.

ahh...yes..big bad bane!:frustrate...the mass murdering mofu!Presa Canario's are good too!
Make sure you check local ordinances before getting anything though. Here in Denver Pit's are illegal, so is anything that 'looks' like a pit (yeah, I know BS law), but in the next town over, presa's, cane corso's and a few others are not allowed.
that pitbulls name is daddy!..his owner is none other then red-man! the rapper/hip-hop artists!Hire this guy, imo.

i really want her to be a sweetie!..lol..!:rofl:Exactly, I have a pit and love her, she is a little soft for me as far as in the protection aspect, but I love my Sadie none the less. I had to inform my wife she is a softie, and not a goon like you want her to be
You don't have to tell me about it! I 'escaped' a town where they wanted to ban ALL large breeds! After a white trash owner with 4 pits let them escape and mauled a women's toy dog (yorkie or chihuahua or something) That included GSD's, Labs, etc.ahh...yes..big bad bane!:frustrate...the mass murdering mofu!
thats one scary animal!
i do not condone dog fighting in any way,i love those animals,i cant even watch a dog fight on nat.geo!..it just so happens that i favor pittbulls, because i was brought up with a yard full of them, before all the bad press!Exactly, I have a pit and love her, she is a little soft for me as far as in the protection aspect, but I love my Sadie none the less. I had to inform my wife she is a softie, and not a goon like you want her to be
Bad owners ruin it for everybody IMO. I was watching its me or the dog, and theis lady had a mastiff named Prince she treated that dog like one, and he did whatever he wanted, and she had the nerve to want to give him away because he was tearing up everything. She had no clue on how to be the head Beeyatch, and not let her dog run the show.
Yeah I could not see a dog fight I hate it too. But yeah A mastiff is not for a first time owner. Like you said they think ohh he is cute all lapping on me, then when he is 150 and raging when its heat time then you are like :wtf:That's a good show too. A mastiff is not a dog for a first time owner...
They think its cute that a little puppy crawls up on their lap and does other cutesy things, then they are pissed off when he's 150lbs and tries to do it.
I've seen one where the lady would feed her dog before the family and let it sleep on the bed, when the husband tried to kiss her, he would bite/snap at him. Dog wouldn't even let him get into his own bed. She placed the dog so high up on the pedestal, the dog thought he was king sh!t and the woman didn't CARE at all.
I would have tossed the dog and the wife out in the yard...

My wife is cool with me wanting a mastiff so Iam looking for ones from the shelter in the Ill/Ind area, its a shame because because all they want to do is be by you and do what you want them too. MY Pit follows me like my shadow when I get home from work, and knows I am the KING of the pack, what I say goes, and its funny cuz my wife is like your daddy is not going to let you jump on the bed. Then once I leave she does, but with stuff like that i dont mind because she knows what is acceptable and what is not.
