Weights up, scales down…

Excellent session!!!!

I have never had dove, how much meat can you get off of one of those lil things? Just enough for a popper or two? :) How hard is it to get the birdshot out of the meat?
It’s not a lot of meat maybe 2 bites. So yeah 1 dove makes 1 popper. Bird shot is usually not hard as they are so small it usually passes through. When I clean them I usually feel for shot and if a bb is in there I just squeeze it out.

We usually hunt for 3-4 times for them and vacuum pack and save them up and cook one batch up. More of just a fun activity and a tradition than anything really. Then hopefully when the littles are older they can do the cleaning and show them how to prepare them!

I don't recognize this at all, is this an older shotty you had refinished?

are you near a PR here???

Love dove. It’s quail with a little more gamey kick. I have some crane I need to cook from last fall. Might do that this weekend
I'm jealous of that, I see the TX guys out crane hunting and it looks awesome. we have swans up here but they are protected. I used to go out with a local guide for snow geese, not cause I didn't know how to hunt, but because he had land locked up in leases and hundreds of deeks so paying to hunt with him was always a blast, and after a while, he'd just start to invite us or let us hunt lease land he wasn't on for a given day (LOL). he always said if he saw a banded swan he was going to take it anyways and have it mounted by a friend so nobody would know lol.

not a bad way to keep the skills up too in case you go after ducks/geese later!

That is the wife’s shotgun, I got her a Franchi I can’t remember the model affinity I think 20 gauge. It’s a really nice shotgun, basically a benalli but way cheaper price tag.

I’m right in there close to a PR. Also I should have noted it was touch and go and not like legal competition bench. Just wanted to test the waters to see where I’m at. After this training block I will bump my 1rep max numbers up and run another 8 weeks.

Franci's and Benellis, no wonder I'm not recognizing them, I come from a Mossberg household lol (although my brother is a Remmington guy.)

I still have my old 870 and mainly use my Remington 1100 circa 2006 😂
When I was 18 my former father in law (then GF's dad) took me in to his favorite pawn shop cause we knew a guy lol. I got my first legal firearm as an adult, my Mossberg 835 which is still my trusty old go-to even though I haven't used it in 2 years now. But its hunted all over the place, took that one to Missouri with me with a case of 3 1/2" BB and BBB shells for blasting snow geese lol..

So like yesterday just feeling out squats, had more in the tank but no need or point of pushing it. Deadlifts will tax me out Friday and then a 3 day of manual labor coming up 😂

JM press i think im going to add in this day for the next 4 weeks.

Squats feeling great so I’ll take that as a win every time.

#priorities
use the good energy for the important lifts then grind out the slop work for the next 3 days. this is the way.
Talk about ACTIVE recovery.

Ok, that's two logs I'm in here using JM presses now. Maybe I should look into them as my hypertophy work on bench day?
They are a great triceps exercise.

Just depends if you feel your bench currently needs more chest or triceps to make it through where you would otherwise fail on a max. Will you fail lower down, or more midway/top of the lift if you fail a rep?

I'd like to jump on this to hear your thoughts as well since you're coaching today. for me its going to be about the half way point if I'm going to fail a big lift. far enough off the chest to hold it and verbally say "take it" to my spotter. probably similar to your 3rd bench attempt last weekend actually.

unless I go full retard, screw up the entire rom and rhythm and pin myself. but that can't be helped. those days i need to just wear a helmet to walk.

If your bench is fairly slow, some speed work can for a month on secondary day can help you regain the speed necessary to make it through the transition.

Otherwise something like Spoto’s or Pin Press from chest can build more raw starting power, or I’d try some volume on a 2-board or EFS Shouldersaver to build that midrange tricep strength. Or just more closegrip bench volume. Do you feel stronger at the chest or lockout? Because saying at the transition midway can be either, or you are just too slow/not explosive.

for me its definitely the 2nd half of the lift is the strongest. when I am at top end weight what I do for the bottom 10% of the lift fully dictates whether I will have success or not, even if the weight itself is achievable. I've been really working hard to improve bottom position as though it was a competition bench. better ROM etc.

I would guess this could have something to do with slingshot overloading allowing me to train top half very very well, but not enough paused work leaving a deficit in the bottom position. I'm not sure exactly how I'd incorporate that with 531 off the top of my head but BBB could definitely include more CGBP.

So either more paused work if you just need to generate more chest power from a dead stop, or Spotos if you need to also reinforce lat control & positioning with the paused start as well. OR Widegrip bench works super well for building bigger pecs for benchwith high volume like BBB where you are at least maintenance calories or higher.

Honestly the way you have been eating and the low %/high volume of BBB work, 5x10 Widegrip bench is probably perfect for you right now. Then you could always switch to Spotos after a few blocks.

But Larry Pacifico and later Louie Simmons were huge advocates of Widegrip volume for beefing up the raw bench. And Swede had success with his 2x25 Widegrip days with a lot of guys which is (surprise) 50 total reps as well.

Here was a small batch of dove poppers pre smoked. I didn’t get a chance to get a picture of them after they were done.

Wow that dove meat is a deep hue! Almost looks like liver.

dove is all slow twitch dark meat, breast and all.

Duck (wild) ,geese (wild), crane the same way .

I like duck hunting but it’s the worst of the above. I like goose, crane and dove are my favorite. Crane is knicknamed “ribeye in the sky” . Tastes like beef skirt steak.

Wild quail is good. Tastes like domestic quail .

Yeah crane is probably the best of them all. Odd though I am a huge duck fan we do a duck and wild rice I could eat that everyday 🤣

That was a great workout, especially in the heat.
It’s definitely a lot lot Hyde said it’s that dry heat that yes it’s hot in the direct sun but it’s tolerable! With that said end of next week are temps drop to 82-83 ish for the rest of the ten day forecast, I’m ready 😂

Man was I spent, long before I went to the garage gym 😂

Was a long 3 days of digging In plumbing, form boards set to top of grade. Need to add plywood for the bottom half of the footers.

All plumbing completed and tied into septic tank. Ran all lines to check for leaks before backfilling.

Had a rain out Sunday so I couldn’t do much work on the foundation. But that allows me to get everything mowed and weed whacking done and other chores that needed attention.

Hoping this week I can get the forms completed and get steel in and foam board laid out so I can get the footers poured. Then lay out the pec lines for all the water then steel and foam for the main slab.

Progress!

I always really liked duck myself, lots of ways to cook it but with Canada Geese thoses breasts are like big ol slabs of steak. I'd just montreal steak season them and toss them on the grill myself. that said, I've had real good duck and disgusting ducks. mallards, pintails, and the like pulled off farms up north were always good eating, but I'd be hard pressed to intentionally try to put a scoter, bufflead, etc on the grill. some of those mud ducks smell like they've been dead a month the day you harvest them lol.

Breakfast fresh eggs ssalsa made from everything out of the garden. And the wife mad a big batch of sourdough bagels.

Also checked in at 202.0 this morning which is a new low for me.

my wife's baking is having the opposite effect on me
Dude she makes so much bread it’s almost crazy, but between the kids and my parents it all seem to disappear. It’s the amount of eggs I’m eating that is crazy, these chickens are cranking on the egg production!

I know this doesn’t look like a whole lot really. Just know that it was a **** ton of work getting this all done 🤣. All below slab plumping completed, still need to final backfill, compact. All tested and good to go. Form boards up for the top half. It will be a 16” deep footer with 1” foam under and 16” wide. Rest of the slab will just be 4” concrete with 1” foam board underneath. Need to get the forms finished down to bottom of footer and get that all ready for concrete.

We are only getting 8-12 eggs a day at the moment but I think we have 6 more layers approaching maturity plus 6 bresse that I keep isolated cause I want nature to hatch its own chicks there for next years meat birds. But when my wife first got into sourdough I was on a loaf a day habit nearly haha. last night I got home and she had two new loaves baked and out on the counter 😂

Really tedious on the plumbing, admittedly I haven’t done any plumbing in a long time so took me a long time to dry fit everything and get all my slopes set correctly.

Also you can’t tell from the picture but where the kitchen sink will be and the washer these are routed out to the tree row where it will be utilized to the trees as opposed to all going to the septic tank.

Also in case anyone is wondering no there is no permits required in my area. So while this is not “code” i just don’t see why to not get the most out of water that this will pull a double duty.

made a trip to town after work got foam board and fiberglass rebar and stands to finish forming up footers. Should be ready for concrete after this weekend. Then I’ll have to get the main slab set up.
