The Unemployment Support Thread

After ten weeks I have found a job. It will be for less money and more responsibility but the second interview and only offer I have had in the entire ten weeks.

In reality this is a dream opportunity to start up a quality system in a privately owned up and coming design and manufacture company. Their future is very bright. It is my prayer that I can live up to their performance expectations.

Awesome B!

Kick azz dude. I know you will! You know your way around manufacturing.

BTW - was going to say my petrochemical plant here in Baton Rouge has opened up applications for clerical positions. Not sure if anyone here is around but I can send a link via PM if anyone knows someone looking for that type of job in this area.

Seeing as you are a quality guy, you will probably far surpass them. I hope it goes well man, and everything takes off.

Congrats to you. Hard working and determined people will find employment in these difficult circumstances regardless of all the negativity out there.

I have since found a part-time warehouse job so I am working full time overall. However I want to still focus on obtaining my credentials/certificates towards Safety Management. I was also told by Unemployment that I qualify for funds dating back to October 2008 when I was reduced to part-time status. I'm going to use that money to get all my credentials completed and get back into school.

I finally received the notice that I didn't get the job at the ploce department.

That has been the only call back i've had in almost four months.

I don't know what I'm going to do now...I was really hoping to get that...I even know people that know people that wwas throwing my name around and it didn't work.

Yeah i have to agree guys its getting pretty ridiculous... im going on month 3 of being unemployed... ive sent out my resume so many times... applied a few places... interviewed a few places.... NOTHING

the one job I thought was for sure cause they are always hiring was a job that would have been slave hours (assembly line work with almost 70 hours a week)... come to find out they had over 200 applicants in 2 weeks

on top of it im trying to get ahead on bills (not working) and my girlfriend is getting more pissed at me by the day that i cant do stuff with her due to no money... god this blows

Yes, sorry, I mistyped and didn't proof read.:pat:...the police department
just wanted to make sure. reason being, I'm also going out for the force. i will be applying to several departments including highway patrol. i currently hold interest in gang unit special assignment when the time comes. one thing at a time :)

how many departments did you apply to?

Just one. It was actually for dispatcher. I don't think I could be an officer...the first time I saw someone abuse a kid/woman/animal I'd be too tempted to show what it's like to get smacked around.

They were hiring two and I took the test and tied for third (the top five scores went on to the next round). I had the interview and thought it went well. I even "know people that know people" and had my name dropped a few times. I didn't work. :(

I'm not sure what to do atm...I've debated on going back and finishing getting a degree...maybe HR or counseling...I've also debated on going to a bodyguard/security school...

I know how you feel man. I haven't worked in 3 months. I was an electrician. I worked for the company for 4yrs and 3months. I got my crane opperators certification. so hopefully things will turn around. I will keep you in my prayers hopefully we'll both get jobs.

Right with you, man. I'm a 2nd year apprentice and had a catastrophic knee injury (not L&I). 2.5 months later I'm almost back to work and there's almost 100 apprentices on the out of work book at my local. I feel bad for those on the book who have wives/kids to support, and have avoided accepting help from the union because of this.

Luckily for me I ferret money away like it's going out of style and have been living off ~10k/yr and saving the rest. Union insurance is so damn good I am blown away that my medical bills amount to around 1k.

I'm not a religious guy, so I'm not thanking the lord; more I'm thanking my family for teaching me that in the end you have to rely on yourself. I was saving for a house; but saving my a** will do in a pinch ;)

Good luck on your quest, everyone...people who take care of themselves are the first ones not to need extra help.

This is going ot be an ongoing trend. Less and less jobs, more and more crime. There is too much revolving debt for people atm, and the economy will never recover as long as the current people who are in control stay so.

Anything short of a total reset of debts wont save this nation. Every company owes mad money for loans that started it, or are part of overhead, add ons, etc. So they cant have as many employees as they like, which means thet cant produce as much, and less people have jobs to buy product, and what is getting bought anymore is on credit card, which adds to the cycle, because eventually those max out, and America is in one big circle of doom.

This bailout plan only helps the rich stay rich. Expect things to get so rough you will consider moving out of the states and changing your name to get a new lease on life, before it gets better. Too many large banks and corporations have too much of the money. Until the day we dont have people getting 100K bonus checks comes, we fail.

I will probably lose alot before I get stable money flow again. And I mean alot, especially for a 22 year old. Will it be the end of the world...no, will i end up hating life for ahwile, probably!

With the way the current capitalist government is set up, legalized theft is all our healthcare, medical systems, corperations, and taxes amount to.

200 years?... well, it's been about 100 years since the federal reserve bill was passed by the president woodrow wilson, who had a VERY interesting quote about it after he did it saying he messed up big time.. check it out ;) That was in 1913. You know what the really funny thing now is? When it's actually happening out in the OPEN, as it is now, many are still so stubborn to see the truth, I mean this isn't even a conspiracy anymore, they are publicly announcing world government is good, we need a new world order, etc..

If you still think this is a conspiracy theory it's time to turn off the T.V and do some research before it's too late and you find you're in one of those FEMA camps, WHICH by the way they have just passed all the bills not even a month ago making them OFFICIAL.. this is all out in the open in the public, no conspiracy theories. Noone believed this. Noone believed it was true we would have the military brigades patrolling the streets of the U.S 10yrs ago they thought wow you're crazy, but now.. it's OFFICIAL, and they are here for CIVIL UNREST as quote by them and or to help with a DISASTER, but they condition us incrementally with the military helping people in car wrecks and etc, it's all BULL, they are here to protect and serve whatever the global elite want to do to us. :usa2:

If you wanna really be scared, watch America: From Freedom to Fascism. It's available free for viewing on the web; I partly agree with the film but at the same time without a violent uprising we will never have a true democracy and I don't think even a revolution will spark the change that its proponents desire.

If you want to make a change in the world, be it. Save money if you have a job; become a spendthrift. If we as a country are going to survive the next 100 (or maybe 50) years, we must learn as citizens of this country not to be sheep and follow what the media tells us we must do. Our bullsh** meters must be tuned to a high pitch and we must trust nobody in the government or higher levels of corporate culture. Those are the bastards that got the economy in this mess, but we as a society bought into the lies like a bunch of village idiots. Why do we need the newest brand x this or that? Because our minds are weak; and we allow ourselves to become dependent on the very governmental and financial institutions that are trying to ultimately f*** us in the a** so we will be slaves.

Good luck, folks but I just about guarantee that in the next 20-50 years a huge sh**storm is coming and we better be ready to defend our rights, our freedoms and what we feel this country was actually founded for because the bill of rights and constitution have already taken some big hits in the past 8 years (thanks, Bush & Cheney). As far as those FEMA camps, it will be interesting if the troops are actually confronted with a real skirmish with the public; if so D.C. better watch out. If we come under martial law I foresee a complete governmental collapse, as all the terrorism our government fakes trying to avert will come from inside the country and America's infrastructure will be very quickly razed by its own populace.

I'm not going to trust Obama either until he fully repeals the damned Patriot Act. That was the biggest affront to our freedoms and rights since, well, the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 and the subsequent abandonment of the gold standard in the 1930s/40s by FDR himself.

I don't like to go off on these issues, but I care too much about this country to watch it going up in flames at the hands of the very people who are elected and hired to protect its interests. Also, if anyone wonders I am not anti-military; I talked to the USAF at one point and they showed no interest in me because I was too old unless I wanted to have a ground support role and I wanted to fly. And before anyone tries to flame me, I mean no disrespect to anyone here; I just wish this whole b.s. economic problem wasn't happening and it's frustrating to see my friends/family and union brothers/sisters have to deal with the ramifications of criminal behavior by the social elite.

Looking back, I'm sorry for the doom and gloom everybody, honest I was just trying to help. BTW, congrats Brian on finding something. Very happy to hear that!

I came into the trades after working various jobs and deciding that, even with a college degree what I really wanted was to work with my hands in a job that can't be outsourced. I tried to get into one union only to be denied, and had to move 2 states away to find the employment I desired (this was 2007). Now, I'm thanking the stars that this is what happened...I finally have medical coverage for the first time since 2002 and guaranteed employment as long as I am able to deal with being laid off every once in a while (apprentices don't stay unemployed for a long time).

Anyone who sees that the trades are hiring and are out of work; you could do much worse...electricians and plumbers generally make the most money (besides elevator guys, but that union almost never hires new guys). It's fun work and once you have your journey license you can start your own contracting company if you don't want to work out of the hall all the time.

Everyone still looking, good luck! Don't lose hope; the next job is just around the bend!

I got laid off too. I am am auto mechanic for Goodyear and got laid off bc of the buissness and well I think my manager was gay since he was fairly new and didnt know how to schedule people. He messed up a couple of checks of mine and well I can just find another job I got a $700 24 drawer crafstman toolbox of my own, got my own tools, so im looking forward for a better job. Anyways for you B and all of you all just to get a good laugh heres something I came upon that was talented and yet funny at the same time. Hope everyone has a great day!

none of you last 3 sound the slightest bit like support

So the second post where I tried to suggest the skilled trades as an alternative was just an ******* remark? Dude, I don't understand why you have to flame everyone you don't agree with.

I doubt he meant that as flaming. I admit rereading my thread made me depressed for a minute lol. There is enough roughness out there, we dont need reminded of it.

I apologize for being gloomy :footinmouth:

Woooooooooooo I got a job fellas!

Congratulations mate!! where are you at now?

I agree, Zero V...I would have deleted that one post but I figured at least some of it had to be said. Now though, we can return to the more important and meaningful business of cheering on people who need to find/have recently found jobs. I just need to get back to work (2 weeks!) so I don't have too much time on my hands to get worked up about politics! :scared:

Good luck everyone!

What websites do you guys use to look for jobs?

I think "Monster" is a joke.

I'm also signed up for equally bad "careerbuilder" and "joblink".

I have these three set up to email me jobs I may like and I NEVER get anything I'm qualified for or is even remotely close to what I want.

There's also another site called "indeed" that compiles from various stes and is supposed to root out the "at home scams". They seem to alway have opening for therapist of every kind you can think of...occuoational, rehab, ect. and not much else other than restuarant work.

OK...I'm going on 5 months and only had ONE interview....which I apparently failed.

I am seriously getting fed up. I see some of these numbskulls that are employed and for the life of me can't figure out wtf they supposedly have that I don't. Some of these people wouldn't know what their own name was if it wasn't on a name tag.

I am flat ass broke. I need to go to the unemployment office to be "reviewed" this week....which means some assclown behind a desk gets to tell be what a piece of crap I am and that I need to try harder. :frustrate

I see sh1t on TV about illegals getting free healthcare here meanwhile I need to see a Doctor to refill my bp medicine and anti-depressants but can't afford to go.:zx11pissed:

:aargh:

I can empathize with your situation. I have a friend who's neighbor is in his mid 20's, has two children, and he lives @ momma's house w/ the baby mama and chitlen, all of them being on welfare. He managed to land a job as a cook paying $10/hr. Buddy uses drugs and doesn't exactly have an impressive resume so how he landed the job is beyond me but I suppose knowing a bit about the employer should help shed some light on the situation. His employer let's him consume alcoholic beverages on-the-job and chances are the boss man is aware about buddy's "smoke breaks" to "de-stress", if u know what I mean.

Hey, more power to him and anyone else on welfare that decides to develop a sense of self-reliance and independency and become.part of the working class. After much wasted time, I decided to take matters into my own hands and I started inquiring about job fairs in my area. I found a great job opportunity doing armed security work. It compliments my studies (criminal justice admin) and my career goals (law enforcement). Not to mention the recession has increased crimes such as theft and burglary so businesses are hiring aggresively for security officers to protect their property and goods.

I'm actually finishing up the remaining 16 hours out of the 40 hrs required in my state to obtain a Class D security license (unarmed). The total cost for the D license class was $102 (not including the $87 state fee). I intend on taking the 28hr course to obtain the G license that will allow me to work with a firearm. Not to mention, an armed position pays better. That license, however, will run me a tad bit over $200+state fees. Altogether, it's costing approx. $510 but it's an investment. Great rewards require taking great risks.

In the end, you have nothing to lose from researching and inquiring. Job fairs are a fantastic gateway to many job opprotunities. Don't be afraid to try something new and keep an open-minded. Patience, positive thinking and persistence are the keys to surviving this long run of a recession. Continue expanding your knowledge by reading and researching. Remain ambitious my friends! Where there is a will, there's a way. We just need to find the way. No one said it was going to be easy but a sure-fire way to complete failure is giving up.

Wishing you all the very best in your pursuits. Jah e with you.

<--- still looking.

I even had one my dad set up. It was delivering medical equipment. They mentioned to my dad they lost 3 people that week and he said I needed a job, I had met the lady a month or so earlier and she remembered me and said I made a good impression and gave him an application for me. I filled it out, turned it in.....nothing. I checked around and they never even called my references.

The police dispatch job I interviewed for already had 2 quit...I emailed the chief and let him know I was still interested in the position....nothing.

:frustrate

So how's everyone else doing? The thread died so I hope you guys are doing better than I am.

Nope pretty much given up hope. I knew it was gonna be rough when my friend called McDonalds and they arent even hiring till August....

Working here and there. Every time I feel I'm gonna get ahead the next week slows down. I'm working for three different companies just t stay busy. Yeah, you can say that at least I'm working, but even with all three jobs I am breaking even while just living in a 1-bedroom. Having a teenage daughter ready to start driving gets expensive, too.

However I take full responsibility knowing that had I finished my degree 10 years ago I would not be in this situation since anumber of jobs I have experience in REQUIRE a degree before they even look at my resume.

I'm going to the gun range to qualify with a .38. I'm already certified with a 9. after today I'm going to get an armed post @ a bank. it'll have to do for now although I doubt it pays poorly.

a lot of people i know are resorting to law enforcement or private sector security for job opportunities. it's either that or the medical industry from what it looks like and if you don't have a degree already to work in the medical industry: you're out of gas. DG is on-point: without a degree nowadays people are having a tough time finding good work. friends of mine's parents have resorted to fast-food restaurant jobs.

things are definitely bad.

Holy Sh!t!!! It's like finding my own personal thread!!!!!!!! Going on 14 mos here. I was a banker, commercial lender. That industry blows right now. It's friggin dead. I'll take anything I can get at this point, short of sweeping a floor or polishing knob.

welcome to the support group roids1 !!!!! :wave2:

I was in college for finance a little over a year ago...I got about half way to the degree, saw the market, and said screw that!!!!

purebred....it's the same here...I go job searching and it either medical related or truck driver.

I have been looking for a full-time job since December when I graduated from college. I have a part-time job right now doing work on computers so at least I have something coming in.

Job market has been crap for awhile and doesn't look to be improving.

i just lost my job too, this world is becoming almost unbearable. My rent just went up...food is more expensive thna ever, and it goes up every time I go to the store...its more expensive....

I cant take much more of this!

Im going infantry and kissing this shitty world goodbye, at least there I get good pay, a place to live and free food.

better than where I love, insane food prices, immigration out fo control, and minimum wage jobs that are hard to come by.

**** this!

I decided to stay in school longer and will continue to do so until I can get a good job.

when I was young my parents MADE me move out and get a job, so I went to a consruction site and was, wwaass making great money! Id of loved to have gone to school, its something some people arent priviledged enough to have the oppurtunity to try.

Bt good for you man, without an education in this new world you are fcked!

even minimum wage jobs are next to impossibe to obtain where I live, and there all taken by foreigners so im stuck!

hopefully the economy bounces back. Obama you better bring "change" lol.

Doubtful tho...

I'm looking into national University's one-course a month accelerated program It's accredited so it's all good. I only need my upper division courses yet the only thing holding me back is deciding just WHAT I want to major in. I've considered teaching, safety management, and recently thought about engineering.

I got a degree in psychology and an MBA and still can't get a gig. My problem is there are no jobs in lending anymore and no one wants to hire me for a lower level job, figuring I'd be miserable and leave as soon as something better came along. But, nothing's more miserable than being unemployed for 14 mos and continuing to get turned down for what few job openings come available.

I got a degree in Criminal Justice and they are only hiring black people in my state and since i'm not black, i won't ever be getting hired :(

soooooo, i'm looking for jobs in security... i sent a resume' out today for security job making 27k a year. that'd be nice, but chances are pretty shitty for me getting that gig...

Reverse Discrimination!!!

jesus brother thats a long time, I built houses since I was 18, it died out in Ontario where im from so I moved out wesrt to Alberta where there USED TO BE and Economic boom, 4-5 years ago...I got out here and its a fckin wasteland of drunks crime and unemployment.

Now im stuck out here in a lease, paying out my a s s for a shithole apartment with no prospects or hope.

And I got even less than change in my pocket,I got lint and a debit card in the negative.

fck me!

I have no choice but to join the infantry, and join the rest of them in the shthole known as Afghanistan. Like I said though 3 meals, place to sleep, pay$ its better tha the reality of my city and country right now! so huuaaa off I go

Something similar just happened.

My next door neighbor was laid off about the same time as me (different place). He's early 20's, wife, kid, and about as much of a dumb redneck you can be. Think the intro to "Idiocracy". He sits on the porch without a shirt and his belly flopped out with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other as he watches his 2 year old place in the yard wearing a diaper and cowboy boots. :wt: He also has an aweful lot of people that seem to come over to visit for 5 minutes or so....hmmmmmm:240:

I just found out last night that he got a job on post in the mess hall making $11/hr. Meanwhile, older and wiser me with some college education and managerial experience has applied to Ft Knox for a civilian job every freakin' week since I was laid off and haven't even recieved a phone call. :banghead:

If I was you brother....Id take your crummy civilian life (mine sucks too) and turn it in for combats and a rifle. You will get paid well, be fed well, and have decent housing.......and once your in , your one of them...and they will always be there for you.

This is a great time to serve...your country cant give you anything.....so give of yourself and you will be rewarded.

I agree with the above, after searching for a job and having no luck......I'm currently trying to join the U.S Coast Guards, going in for my physical/asvab test this monday. Hope that I pass everything so that I can get on my way.

I got my interview with the Iron Workers Union on Thursday. I did the first application, then took their test on another day, and now this. So far so good, but tons of competition. So may my words be guided and they find me worthy to be an apprentice. Free health care, and 15.93 starting out would make my life whole again lol.

good luck with this brother, ive learned that no matter how hard i try and work...I wasnt given the fckn golden spoon from my parents...so things will never be easy, but although its tough I truly believe all the tough times are making me stronger , and more fit for hardships to come. AND THEY WILL COME!

I got laid off right before Christmas. Took a 6 month vacation, collected checks from the Governator, now I'm back on the 40 hour/week grind. I applied to jobs on Monster, CareerBuilder, Craigslist, etc...but 99% of the interviews I got were from networking. It really is who you know. Circulate your resume among your boys, ya never know. A friend of a friend of a friend could help you get your next gig.

Hey guys been a while since I have been on here, ironically my first time back I have to report that I was laid off. Oddly, I am not mad at being laid off, I am mad at the way they did it. They kept telling me that if I decide to leave, give them at least a two week notice. I went on vacation, then the first day I return, they greet me "hey zay glad you back, hope you had a great time". Then at five, they call me in and let me go. So much for loyalty. That is one of the reasons I miss the Army, they NEVER lay people off, no matter how bad the economy gets. Oh well, I will go ahead and push my business. I build media center HTPC (home theatre PC). But, I also do IT consulting. (this is not an aadvertisement) check out my site: Invalid Link Removed. I think it was a sign for me to make that move. I had been planning and thinking about it for a while. So this might be the push I needed.
