Actually it was the people who were best at storing calories, those with a tendency toward being fat and the ability to survive food shortages, that survived and reproduced. The reason there weren't many fat people until recently is because food was scarce and people had to bust their ass physically on a daily basis just to survive. Or in other words there wasn't much chance to get fat. Now there is much more leisure time, and cheap calorie dense food that's easily available, and therefore a ****load of fat people.
And you're likely not going to help a fat kid by just shaming him. What the **** is a kid going to do when he's shamed, go to the body recomp boards and learn about leptin and intermittent fasting? Not likely. He's going to reinforce bad habits, go huddle somewhere and eat, and likely not learn what he needs to learn and unlearn the **** he's learned thus far. You need to give them a positive route to follow, and within that context shame is a tool to use to get them on the right path.
I'm for personal responsibility to an extreme beyond most. But blaming a kid who has never been taught the right things is just plain idiocy. You're not born knowing proper nutrition and eating habits, just like you're not born knowing how to pilot a plane. It's something that's either learned or neglected. Blame the people who did the neglecting, help the kids who never learned.
Good post CDB... I was beginning to think I was the only one with a heart here......
