It is hard for me to have a religious debate because my views are extreme. I was raised Catholic, went to private schools my entire life as my family wanted religion to be a very important part of my life. In the end, however, I see faith with the same eye as I see the belief of fairy tales. I see religion as a method of taking advantage of this human logical weakness in order to enforce ideals, collect money, and enjoy the many other benefits that come with organized religion (I mean...who WANTS to pay taxes?). I don't disrespect people that believe, it should be obvious that my family does based on what I said previously. However, I can't find a way to have a logical discussion on a subject I find to lack any form of logic.
 
Sadly most have no idea of what faith is because it is counter-intellectual and counter-logical/reasonable and therefore they reject it. Sadly far too many very intelligent people are victims of themselves. They have great intellectual capacity to define and metaphore what a paradox principle is yet are completely and hopelessly powerless to live by it.

Inserting religion and mythology into a faith discussion is foolish. Discussing faith with someone who has no idea what faith is or how to practice it is equally foolish.

I subscribe to more of a deism/agnostic belief. Is there a God? I don't know. I see it as a possibility certainly but can't really say definitely that there absolutely is or isnt which is why I wouldn't call myself an athesit. Believing in some sort of higher power doesn't really cost me anything so why not believe it. Its a nice and comforting thought IMO. Problem I have is religion. You see in my opinion, science doesn't disprove God. The big bang theory and evolution doesn't say God doesn't exist, but it does say the bible and organized religion is wrong. And that is only one example. And this isn't exclusive to just Christianity, you can see this in all religions. But again this doesn't prove there isn't a God, just that mans interpretation of what God is wrong. Follow? I feel like I am sort of rambling here lol

I have been trying to stay out of this one a bit....for obvious reasons. :)

Although I will say that the list you quote is not 100% accurate, as Horus' story has been embellished.

I will just say this, the narrative of Yeshua has been taken many times from earlier Pagan sources. That does not mean that a character of the time did not exist, just that much of the stories, miracles and traditions are identical to many earlier sources.

Additionally, I do hope that people realize that there were countless miracle workers at the time and earlier than Yeshua. A great example is Simon of Perea. Additionally, I know many theists will make the case that due to the population of christianity and its 2000 year history, that is proof of its veracity. Not necessarily. I would suggest reading the contemporary works of Pliny as well as research the Council of Nicea and Hippo to see how more "modern" Christianity came to be.

I have absolutely the same proof you do. None. But "the substance of things hoped for by the evidence of the unseen" have been abundant in my life. "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." It does not say mind, logic, reason or any other faculty. All of those faculties contradict time after time after time. I cannot find Him on my terms.

btw-anyone ever saw the pyramids in person? it is impossible for me to believe that eygptians were able to build them with the technology that they suppossedly had available at the time???? either they were far more advanced than science tells us, or there was something else involved....

They couldn't have built them. The time lines don't match up as it doesn't with the sphinx's weathering patterns.

Edit: timelines meant the purported 20 years it took. That doesn't work. At that rate, a stone would need to be in place perfectly every 90-120 seconds. Sones of solid limestone that are so precise a razor couldn't fit between them. In all honesty, there is evidence that there were civilizations prior to the ending of the last ice age. If they were advanced, this would make far more sense.

some argue that the Big Bang can coincide with the Biblical description of creation.

Big Bang = moment God started creating the universe as we know it

I don't have the mental capacity or the texting skills (on my phone) to expand but it's interesting.


personally, I think it takes more faith to believe the Big Bang and everything is just chance than a matter of divine creation.

it is nice to see people having discussions without character attacks. 'merica!

even though im a christian, i believe in the big bang theory 100%. how can you not?! God said, in the span of 6 days, BANG and the world happened. duh

Time is a creation of man, you are now making the assumption that a day to God is the same as a day to us.

When realistically a day to him could be hundreds, or thousands, of years to us.

An earth day is 1 rotation no matter who you are. A mars day is 1 mars rotation no matter who you are. So yes, with the same spinning body, a day has to be the same or days themselves don't make sense.

Someone didn't just say "24 is a cool number, let's make that the number of these awesome "hour" things in a day"

And now you are assuming that God is on Earth (when he resides in Heaven), does Heaven even rotate on any axis? I don't know, do you somehow know?

Now you assume the days that were spoken of were rotations of Earth, which it says not one time in the Bible.

God didn't create time, we did.

I tried to end it before it started, but people are very passionate about this kind of stuff; afterall, many peoples lives revolve around it. Some poeples lives revolve around faith and trying to persuade them something isn't real will get you nowhere, and vice versa. The only real end to a religion debate is to agree to diagree on the subject. Afterall, if either sides arguments were compelling enough then this debate need not happen as factual evidence and circumstance will dictate the outcome.

A large portion, if not the sole reason for religion is based on faith which cannot be scientifically proven nor disproven. Its not measurable or quantifiable in the same way other things are, therefore a generl consensus may never be made.

As David Dunn said, you cannot argue faith with a person who does not understand it or even acknowledge its existance. You cannot impart faith on someone, it must be sought for oneself.
