Of course an assault rifle is a select-fire weapon capable of fully-automatic and / or burst fire. Doesn't make a bit of difference WHAT the bloody thing looks like. "Ooh, it's got a PISTOL GRIP!!! Ooh, it's got a FLASH SUPPRESSOR!!! Oh, No - look at the size of that magazine!!!

The "assault-weapon ban" was the WORST sort of law, using descriptions that have no actual meaning, focusing on meaningless minutiae - an excuse for self-righteous hyperventilation & nothing more. I wrote to my state Senator once - a guy I'd gone to high school with - and wore him out for using contradictory & meaningless phrases such as "semi-automatic assault rifle...." I got a rubber-stamp-signature response, thanking me for "sharing my concern about dangerous weapons in the hands of criminals," yadda yadda yadda, please write again.

Why do people focus on misnomers only in their cause? the general public is unaware of the true definition on damn near everything. Weapons are far from the exception. Knowing an assault rifle is only one that has selective fire isn't really something that should have an essay written about it.

I don't think the assault weapon ban is effective by any means but I don't think pointing something like the above out is an effective means of arguing things since their stance will be the same it'll just adjust to include assault rifles as well as semi-auto rifles.

Agree on all points, Jay - this was 25 years ago (plus or minus) - and the event that *taught* me how unproductive the approach is.

Still cranks me when people just make up new meanings for the words they've decided to mangle...just wired that way, I guess.

Well I am also upset my tax money is going to help abortions for those who cannot afford it. Not to mention this stimulus package which has no accountability. This is becoming a socialist nation, and where does that work? Why should those of us who work hard pay for programs, health, etc. for those who cannot afford it BECAUSE they are not working themselves? Tell me there are no women with 6 kids from 6 different daddys sucking off the government!!! If you give someone a crutch, they use it. If you don't, they go out and work.....wouldn't that stimulate the economy? People working to support themselves. I don't even want to pay taxes anymore the way things are going. Yes I like to help those in need, but not those who take advantage of the system.....which actually is the majority! How many people on welfare or unemployment doing something about it? Very few, and most are getting that check and slinging rock making a good living while you and I are bustin our asses for them to do so! I'm sick man.

I mean, he is spending $170mil on his inaugeration today, which in this difficult financial time is well spent money. We need to celebrate this day to the extreme.
