My doctor diagnosed me with OA in my shoulder I've been lifting for 5 years LOVE going as heavy as possible LOVE lifting and when I heard this was worried my shoulder is now a ticking time bomb. Clicks like a MF but have no trouble completing workouts and still get steady gains. Somebody ease my mind I'm terrified I might have to give up doing what makes me the happiest I've ever been. Anyone else have experience with this ?

56 year old powerlifter here. You will be fine. We all have some arthritis. It means nothing, but it means something. You need to get rid of that click. Very most often its weakness in the "back" and too much heavy bicep work (or reliance of biceps) that causes the shoulder to be out of place and clicking. I like face pulls using different implements with different grips etc.. once a week to keep the shoulders pinned in position. However, I have no idea what your issue may be. So get rid of the click (and keep addressing any other warning signs that pop up in your training) and keep exercises like face pulls, rotator cuff exercises etc.. etc.. in your routine to keep the shoulders healthy.

Can you really get rid of the click once it's there ?

I don't know your situation, but very very most likely yes. I have got rid of more clicks and shoulder pain than you can imagine. The answer is always more posterior work and tighter form. Even if the joint has damage. My shoulder joints look like they got hit by buckshot. Does the shoulder hurt or click? No. Do I press heavy each week? yes. Do I do tons of supporting exercises to keep the shoulders in place and to support pressing? Yes. Do I train to failure? Very rarely.

Doing movements such as face pull and rotator cuff varieties and avoiding things that cause issues like bicep work that is overtaxing or pull ups that go to failure etc... etc... is the key. Again I don't know your situation to every tweak we get.

Is there a chance of getting my full external shoulder rotation back if I lost it ? Can manage face pulls but not standing straight up arms to the side cannot retract fully ?

Again I do not know your situation, but very most likely yes. I would go see a good physio person. They will help you get your ROM back. As for face pulls, I would do what you can. You should notice your ROM getting better as you progress. Go light - at least 20 reps.

Ya good advice there. Arthritis is kind of inevitable, but it can be managed and mitigated.

You should be able to return to full ranges of motion and movement efficiency with the right kind and amount of work.

I thought i posted about this yesterday but i must not have.

I have arthritis in both shoulders and a partial tear in both rotator cuffs, i spent a good chunk of time eliminating all painfull exercises. Rehab work for the rotators and a metric fuk ton of side laterals 2-3x week. After a few months i started adding in exercises And little by little I was eventually able to do everything again. During that time i turned my shoulders into my strongest bodypart From a physique point of view, got the strength and "most" of the mobility back. Benched 353 and 370 in 2 bench comps @198lb class and i do about 30 rounds a week on the heavy bag on top of my lifting.

You need to Get rid of everything that hurts and start doing the exercises that you can pain free and get really strong at those. And not strong with low reps that's just gonna get you hurt.

20-30 rep sets of lateral raises
20-30 rep sets of incline db presses
Lots of dead hangs too

Whatever is pain free do it. Stregnthen all those little delt muscles so the can pick up the slack

thanks for the advice! What if I experience minor pain for my first set for the first week of a new exercise but that pain subsides by my 2nd or 3rd set??? I really need to incorporate face pulls with the external rotation like he was saying. Also I have things I just really enjoy doing and I have been doing for years . Long story short minor pain is fine right ?

I dont think so, No i wouldnt say minor pain is fine. No pain is fine. If you have minor pains you should avoid the exercises causing pain.

And go to a specialist, I know asking a bunch of random people on the internet will give you a piece of mind but its absolutely a false sense of security. Just because we tell you our stories Doesn't mean any about information is gonna help you, the shoulder joint is complex and everyones issues could be verry different. You should see a "Sports Physical Therapist".

Yes, for 35+ years mine has been a nuisance. 1st tore it around 1991 or so. (rotator).
Been hurting on/off for over 3 decades, I just feel its "normal" and I dont feel like getting carved up.
Just need to deal with it, work around it...

BPC-157 and TB 500 right in the shoulder. No reason to live with that pain.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're dealing with osteoarthritis in your shoulder. It can be incredibly challenging to manage pain and maintain mobility in that area. Have you explored different methods for relief and support? Using a hip brace, for example, might seem unconventional, but it could offer some surprising benefits.
You can find more information about how a hip brace might be beneficial for shoulder osteoarthritis at https://artikmed.com/hip-brace/. Remember, it's essential to explore various options and find what works best for you. Wishing you all the best on your journey to managing your osteoarthritis and finding relief from the discomfort.
