Jas's Strongman Training log

I'd tell you that you were too far up from parallel - except, you squat more than me. :(

I don't know. They look pretty good to me when I pause the video at the bottom. The fast descent makes it tricky to judge I think. I'm not going any under parallel for sure, but that would probably be powerlifting legal. If people disagree, though, I'd like to hear it. Poly, what do you think?

Poly, what do you think?

I ran the vids in slow motion. The first one is hard to say because JD's hand is in the way. In the second video, I noticed that it's very hard for me to determine where the crease of your hip is actually located. I have a feeling that it's quite a bit lower than I perceive it to be. In any case, you're definitely near parallel (within an inch as an overestimate.) Another thing that adds to the perception of depth, I think, is the fact that your knees go in as soon as you start to ascend (duh, it's a P R attempt), which makes it seem as if you're higher than you actually are. But your knees didn't come together until AFTER you got down to what seemed to be at least parallel. So, accounting for all that, I'd say it's legal and parallel or below.

Looks perfectly parallel to me, that's exactly what my squats look like, but I don't go down as quickly. I think that angle is a bit deceiving, but when paused at the bottom, depth looks perfect.

Poly and I did some serious camera tricks to make those quarter squats look legit.

Thanks for the opinions. I'd hate to really be doing quarter squats and think they were legit.

Poly, did you know you DL more than Andy? You should talk sh1t to him. Are you going to drop traditional DLs from your training for Romanians. (Poly's going oly on us, Alex.) Those split jerks were looking nice today.

Yeah, he said he doesn't care about DL and that he benches more than me. I don't care about bench, so it all works out.

The jerks messed up my left elbow a bit while doing them because I think I was extending my arms too fast, if that's possible. Maybe it's just something that I will get used to. Now it's fine, though. How's your knee, by the way?

Could be the angle, but I was judging using the safety bar as a level reference, and looking at the top of your quad. From that perspective, it's not parallel. Definitely not a quarter Squat, at any rate.

It's not the knee. I tore some small but significant portion of my adductor, I think. I'll have to lay off of lower body stuff for 2-3 weeks which means that I'm out of my contest on May 31st. I'm a pressing machine for the next few weeks since that's about all I can do.

Thanks Volcom. I'll have to catch up with your log. I haven't been on here as much lately.

No worries, I started a new one anyway. Day 1, looks like I blew my lumbar. I may have re-aggravated my slip disc in a really bad way. I'm wearing my weight belt underneath my work clothes right now (I blew it this morning) and if the Firm covers it, I may go see a chiro this afternoon :frustrate

Man, that sucks. Back injuries are really a nightmare.

I was treated on some Spinal Decompression Machine, and my intervertebral disc inflammed so much that I can barely walk right now. I was laying at the Chiro's office and he didn't know what to do with me because I couldn't move my legs without excruciating low back pain or support myself in an erect position. I'm pretty much phucked at the moment. He wants an MRI, I have no medical insurance. Oh to be a Canadian right now.

So the Machine aggravated it? Ouch man. MRI's can be expensive as hell especially with no med insurance. You probably know all this already, but I think some guys around here had a treatment plan for disc injuries, maybe Grunt and Crunch or something.

I've had a lot of disc issues and they can suck the life out of you. I haven't had anything major for a while luckily. Good luck.

Thanks Hateful.

Squat - 32# bar - 25X3

-this is part of a rehab I'll be trying for my leg by Bill Starr. Credit Polynomial for directing me to it.

Bicep and back machine nonsense

abs/core work

The bodybuilding type work actually felt kind of nice for a change of pace. Maybe I'll try doing about 2 weeks of this after long training cycles leading to a contest.

Sat.

squat (rehab)
45-25x3

Sun.

BW-221.2

Bench (touch n go)

squat (rehab)
45-25
55-25
65-25

Amazing! Honestly, it feels like the perfect solution. Thanks again.

The bench at CR is horrid, but I don't think it would have gone regardless. The spotter (Nick didn't show up) grabbed it immediately, before I even struggled much, so I can't gauge exactly how close. I think 395 would have gone up.

Yeah, some spotters seem eager to get a trap workout every time the bar starts to slow down.

As for the rehab, I reread Rippetoe's post and I wasn't sure if you do 45x25x3 and then do a few more sets of 25's, or if it's just 3 sets of 25's at different weights for 10 days. (I noticed that you did 6 sets total today). Either way, I'm sure you can feel it out if you're doing too much/too little.

Also, I got a heating pad for my back and it did wonders. Thanks for the suggestion.

No the first 3 sets were from Saturday. The next 3 from today. I've been doing 3 per day. What's crazy is that those 3 sets actually wind me.

Heating pads are amazing. They really loosen up a stiff back.

Rehab is looking good, keep it up. Have you done any cold therapy, I always found an ice bath to work wonders, especially with an interior leg injury.

Yeah, I use an ice pack about 3 times per day for 20 min. It seems to help a lot. The leg is feeling way better and I think I'll squat heavy again in 2 Mondays.

Fri.

BW - 222.5

Pullups

I have no endurance on these. My forearms get too pumped on the first set, and I can't hang on after that.

Some other rehab stretches and things.

Ice packs definately help alot, you may want to try some active range of motion while icing, I bought a garbage can and fill it with water and ice then do body squats in it, just an idea if you wanted to try it.

Sounds like a good idea Hateful, but I probably can't implement it with an apartment. You do some really interesting training so I'm always open to suggestions of things to try.

Sunday

How's your training going, Alex?

You doing any OHP?

How much do you weigh and where are you at BFwise?

It's going decent. I haven't really gotten back in the groove, because I've been back at work. I always have some excuse, lollerz. I haven't been doing much OHP, except some BB presses grinding/pushing against the rack with 135#, which is hard for me to do 12 times. I weigh about 230, but my BF is pretty bad. I reckon about 15-16%. I'd have trimmed down to 12% or so had Mullet sent me the Recreate like he said he was, oooooooooooooh.

The best sh*t I've done recently is 335x1.7 on incline and I have been squatting with 275 for somewhat high reps. I think I'm ready to move to 365, my legs don't really seem as weak as I expected them to be.

lollerz, indeed. :run: 15-16% isn't that bad. You're squatting more than I am now. Glad to hear it's coming back.

Looks like the rehab is coming along well, how did the 185 feel? I know that you don't normally use chains but I have found them to be very beneficial in the injury recovery process, they also help to keep your form nice and tight, just a thought.

It felt good, but I still feel like I need to increase slowly. I have access to chains this summer so maybe I'll try them. Thanks for the advice. I'm happy my weight is holding because usually I lose a load of mass in my legs if l take even a little time off.
