Jas's Strongman Training log

Thanks, bud. I was pretty happy with it, but wanted the 245 on standing mil.

Mullet, you look like you may be leaner than 10%, but I can't see your abs.

Mm, I don't think so. I've been bulking for forever, but maybe. I don't think I'm 10%, as that would have meant I was 6-7% formerly.

Haha, I dumped a 225 Front Squat today! Fvck it was embarrassing. I was able to hit 215 x 4 recently for very deep reps, so I upped the weight 10lbs and planned to hit a double. First rep went so-so, and on the way down on the second rep SPLAT! Made this huge thud and the weight rolled around..lol.

Nice. Sometimes you just lean too far forward ever so slightly and it starts to roll on you. I dropped 315 recently and it wasn't because of the weight, just balance.

Yeah, I had my hips too far back and chest too far forward. It was awesome. This disgustingly masculine feminine BB'er laughed at me.

Did she smell like a science experiment? When I used to workout at Gold's their was a handful of masculine BB'er chicks that smelled like a spanish armada.

Dude, I am not exaggerating, her balls are bigger than mine, and she has a 5 o'clock shadow. One time she walked by me and went, "Nice biceps peak". I sort of felt demeaned man. I know how girls at the bar feel. She was fvcking intimidating.

Yeah, its a weird feeling for sure. Those monster chicks are usually really friendly and cool, but its tough to get past their exterior. I have a confession to make. Once at Gold's, one of those she male monsters offered to stretch me out, she was a trainer. I let her stretch me out, and honestly, I enjoyed it. If only I had a pic of her.

Hah! You're hilarious man. That just raises so many questions.

I know man, I scare myself. I'm not attracted to even semi-muscular chicks, but somehow I was loving this monster chick rubbing her muscly tits on my leg while stretching my hammies:fool2::sick:

Oh fvck that's just gross man. I'm simply not attracted to muscle-bound women at all. I like 'em thin with big boobs. Does that make me misogynistic?

I don't know what misogynistic means, but I must be that too. Thin with big boobs is the way to go, with a little something extra in the a$$ department.

It literally means to have a hatred or distrust of/in women, but I was just using it to mean disrespectful.

I think there are double-standards in what women and men can say about each other; if a girl tells you you're ripped and asks if you have a big penis, it's butterfly and rainbows; if you say she has a bangin' body and asks what cup size she is, lawsuit.

Haha, very true.

I don't ever ask because I can guess on the spot though - that and what color and style their underwear is. It's a talent of mine. Great drinking game.

That's awesome. Were you walking around "rock hard" after that? ...jesus that's creepy. My ex used to always want to get me a massage, but I was afraid I'd have issues if it was a chick doing it. She'd be like flip over, :run:

There used to be an intramural bench press contest at my university in my undergrad years, and one year this chick benched 225. She was creepy. I later found out that she was dating this giant shotputter from England that had been kicked off the Brit team for testing positive multiple times. They ended up going to Venas Beach (sp?) for their honeymoon. Ridiculous.

Sunday

Axle Continental Clean and Press
254-3
274-1
294-1
314-0 missed cleaned

Farmers walk (on grass)
230 per hand - 110 ft with 1 turn at 60 ft
- 60 ft (tried hook grip and hated it)
- 60 ft

4-540 tire flips + 230 sled pull 60ft backwards through long grass
run 1-32.07s (terrible flipping because of grip problems)
run 2-26.93s (much better)

Pretty decent day. My farmer's wasn't very good. Last week they were done on even cement, and this week it was on uneven grass. That may have contributed to my problems since my stability sucks.

Workouts are looking good, seems like you are reenergized. I believe the wall grapplers are what I call russian twists, except I put the empty end of the barbell in the hole of a plate on the ground. I love them and I feel like my core has gotten significantly stronger since including them in my routine. Keep up the good work bro.

Thanks HO.

Tues.

BW-225

DL reps (reset after each rep, ie not touch and go)
445-7

Rack pull from 12.5''-some warmups but had nothing left

Rack squats with pins just above navel (feet fairly close)
405-1
495-0 (I have no quad strength whatsoever :rasp:)
495-1 (moved feet about 6'' wider - much easier)

Good Mornings down to about parallel
225-3
245-3
265-2

I messed around with foot position on DL today and it made a huge difference. I had seen a guy at a strongman contest use a stance where he touched his heals together and put his feet outward at 30 degree angles from forward. I tried that stance and my normal stance of about 10'' apart on all of my warmups and the new one felt much better. It was like some part of my legs were in the way of the movement restricting me before and now they're out of the way. So I used it on my reps and was pretty happy with the results. I couldn't seem to get much done after my deads. I was spent.

Wed.

BW-224

Log bar - 1 clean and strict press
188-5
208-1
213-2

log bar = weird curl bar with handles perpendicular to shoulder line like a log (handles were slightly closer together than the standard log).

Speed Standing Military with purple bands (stretched about 4' at bottom of lift)-
45-immediately lost control when unracking and dropped it
45-5
75-3
95-3x3x3x3x2(fail on 3)

Tried to incline but CNS said no.

Face pulls and some shoulder prehab/rehab stuff.

Thurs.

BW-222

Hang Snatch-
175-2
185-1
195-1
200-1
205-1* (slight pressout in left arm and UGLY)

Front Squats (belt + knee sleeves)
275-3
315-2
325-1

Russian Twists (or Corner Grapplers)-
90-8
105-8

Towel Pullups (drape towel over bar and hold the ends and do pullups) - 12

Strongman Sunday

Log bar clean and press-
239-3
258-3 (assisted clean)
278-0
278-1 (assisted clean)

Axle Power Cleans -
204-1
224-1
245-1

Farmers Walk -
230-120ft (1 turn at 60ft)
280~20ft
280~35ft

Medley - 4 540# Tire Flips and a 60 ft sled drag weighing 250# on grass
1st run - 26s
2nd run - 29s

The log bar is extremely hard to clean. You can't clean it like a barbell or a log really so I got some help with the heavier cleans. It also rolls in your hands while pressing it which screwed up some of my presses.

I don't think that I ever mentioned this, but I have a strongman contest on Sunday. It is kind of a bust because I don't think that many signed up for it. My training partner won a big contest in May (that I sat out of with an injury) so it will be fun to go toe-to-toe with him if nothing else.

Here are the events:

Log Clean and Press:**
8” Log, for max weight.
3 attempts, Wessels Rule in effect.

Deadlift:** (12'' pull, not touch-and-go)
60 second time limit.
LW: reps with 445#

Keg Load:
60 second time limit.
5 Standard beer kegs 20’ to 10’ away from 49” platform.
LW: kegs up to 210 (really light)

Farmers Carry:**
No time limit.
For max distance, turns will be every 20 yards (60 feet).
LW: 225

Tire/ Sled medley
:
60 second time limit.
500+ tire flipped 4 times, then drag sled for 20 yards (60 feet).
LW Sled: 450

I'll only lift tomorrow and do some light conditioning work and then rest up.

I also dunked a basketball fairly easily (1 handed) last weekend. I've done it before (2 handed) but not at this weight and with my knees in the beat up state that they have been in for the last few months. I was hammered so maybe that helped, but I was happy that I could still do it.

Wed.

CnJ-
131-16
131-16
131-18

Squat-
135-30
135-30

This was really tiring which probably means that I need to do more of it. I wanted to feel somewhat exhausted like after 5 contest events (of course this was much lighter).

Let me boost your training a little. I failed on a 545# deadlift yesterday. I'm a beast.

Somehow I still have no leg strength or drive. I can do rack deads decently, but a normal dead and squatting seems impossible. Looks like I have a longer way back than I had anticipated. The ankle feels better every week, and I've quit drinking temporarily so I hope to get back to a 635+ dead and start posting vids by the end of summer, hopefully.

Damn, how the mighty have fallen. Just playin'. It will come back quick, just get motivated. "I have temporarily quit drinking" :toofunny:. Irish drunk. I got smashed on the 4th at a BBQ where I only knew my girl and was making fun of random people. I thought I had become more responsible with alcohol, but I guess not

I'm interested in seeing what I can pull with my new cracked out stance that takes the strain off the quads and puts more on the hams and glutes. I'll try to get a video some time so you can go :jaw:

Thanks, HO. It will be a fun summer warmup for competition.

Strongman Contest Results:

There were 8 LWs and 2 HWs so it was a little bigger than I expected bu 2 of the LW were around 160 so it was more like 6 LWs.

BW - 221.7

Log press - 1st
1-240
2-260
3-290 (just barely got it - I was walking all over the place before I got it stable) - new state record

Deadlift - 4th
445 reps from 12'' - 12

Keg Load - 1st
5 kegs in ~25.5s

Farmer's Walk - 1st
180ft (the knurling on those handles helped big time)

Tire Flip/Sled Pull Medley - 2nd
~35s (I had a hell of time getting a good grip on the tire, which allowed my training partner to beat me out - oh well)

Overall - 1st.

Aside from getting called a ballerina, the stance worked pretty well. I wasn't too far behind some good DLers. Thanks for the congrats, man.

I'm afraid I don't have any videos this time.

Alex, there was a dude there that was classic. This guy made "Joey" look as nimble as Barry Sanders. He fell on multiple events and stalked off like a badass after completing the keg event while suffering from "invisible lat syndrome". He was from Jakked....

I can't resist commenting on my man joey:icon_lol: This guy is from a town near by mine and I have seen him out a few times, if he was on t.v. his hame would be Al Borland Binford, thats how big of a tool he is, oh but he is a trainer at a Baley's so its ok he is getting huge over there, :toofunny:.

Holy sh1t! You've seen the infamous Joey from the Real World? That's hilarious. Alex and I have been laughing at that guy for a while.

Here the events for NAS nationals on Sept. 13th:

Day One (Saturday): Log C&P for Reps/ (LW 230, HW 280)/ 60 seconds, Clean each rep

Farmer's Walk/ (LW 275, HW 325)/ 60 feet, 60 seconds

Stone Over the Bar for Reps/ (LW 300 over 48", HW 360 over 52")/ 60 seconds

Day Two: (Top 30 LW & top 30 HW overall move on.)

Press Medley/ DB, Keg, Axle, Log/ (LW 100#, 225#, 240#, 260#, HW 120#, 250#, 270#, 300#)/ 60 seconds

Car Deadlift for Reps (Side handle 14" pull. suits and straps allowed)/ (LW 550#, HW 650#)/ 60 seconds

Block Load/ Truck Pull Medley/ 2 blocks 30 feet to 48" platform followed by a 60 foot truck push/ (LW 250 & 275#, HW 275 & 315 #)/ 75 seconds

Here are my plans for training for this. I will move almost exclusively to event training with one gym day.

Tuesday
1. DL from 14'' - work up to 550 for reps

2. Squat or front squat - deep but keep it light

Wed.
1. Log CnP reps in 60s (clean each rep) - 1 set at 230 and 1 lighter set of high reps at 180 or so to build up some endurance (I may increase the weight slowly on this set)

2. Press medley with 220 keg, 240 axle, 260 log. The first week or two I'll work on technique with just the keg because I've never tried it.

3. 1 set of heavy standing military with the log or axle.

Friday
1. Farmer's Walk for 60 ft - work on speed with a few light sets of 160 and 230 or so and then try 2 runs with 280.

2. Car/truck push - whatever is available.

Sunday
1. Yoke Walk for 60 ft - work up to heavier and heavier weights - eventually 700.

2. Tire Flips - maybe 1 60 ft speed run and 1 long cardio run

3. Atlas Stones

Sunday will depend a lot on the availability of equipment...

Thurs.

BW - 222.5

ATG Squats - feet shoulder width and high bar position (belt + knee sleeves)
315-6

One arm DB one clean and strict press reps-
right - 100x2
left - 100x1 close on 2nd

Sunday - Strongman

Got my new log this weekend. It's steel and about 10.75'' in diameter.

Log Clean and Press (each rep):
225-2
225-2
225-3

I'm not used to this large of a log at all and felt very off. I also will be working on cleaning it without using a loop in my belt since I don't think this is allowed a nationals (12'' log at nationals). I'm pretty terrible at it now. This was just a light day and I will move my pressing to Wed. starting this week.

Farmer's Walk-
210 - 60ft moved very fast.

A friend didn't show so I didn't have enough weight to go heavier.

540 Tire Flips - Tire starts standing and must entirely cross a line 60ft away
1st run - untimed but fast
2nd run - 23 s

This requires the initial push over and about 8 flips if the tire bounces a lot and maybe up to 10 if it dies quickly and doesn't bounce forward.

Tuesday

Tried out a suit today. I don't even know what kind it was aside from an Inzer (borrowed it from a friend).

Suited 14'' DL with side handles (rigged up 2 barbells side-by-side)-
450+some barbell weight from maybe 45-70 - 3 reps
500+same barbell weight - 1 rep

I think this was much harder than a car DL from the same height because it was rigged up so weird. Next week I'll just use farmers handles.

Speed Box Squats in suit with straps down-
315-5 sets of 3

The suits are really ridiculous to get on (this was my first time in one), and apparently mine was on the looser side. I can't believe how much they cut you up in through the hips too. I looked like I got groped by Edward Scissorhands afterwards. Damn I'm bombing hard.

Wed.

Official log diameter is 10.86''.

Log clean and press (clean each rep)-
225-5
245-2

My cleans are horrible and very energy wasting I think. I tried getting very low while crouched with the log on my knees and locking the bar high on my chest. Then exploding up and rolling it the last little bit. This doesn't seem to work too well for me because it keeps sliding down my chest as I move up. I either need to lean back more on the way up or lock the log into my hips and use a hip thrust to roll it up my chest. I'm too used to using a belt loop to help with the cleans.

220 keg clean and press-
Press with one hand on top lip of the keg and one on the bottom - got it twice with no failures. This isn't easy but not terrible
Press with both hands on bottom lips - got clean twice then lost it trying to transition hands to bottom lips of keg. Third time, got hands in position but lost it about 6'' shy of lockout.

Log Strict Press-
195-4 fail on 5

I only ever tried a Titan DL'ing suit, but I didn't enjoy it that much. I never got used to the technique. That was along time ago though.

Yeah, I'm not really a huge fan of it and doubt that I will ever do it again unless it's allowed like it is in this one. I guess every little bit helps, but I'm not too sure how properly I'm using it. I know they aren't supposed to help at all really after you get it to your knees. With a 14'' pull, I wonder how much I'm really getting from it.

Friday

BW-224.5

Farmer's Walk for 60 ft runs
160 warmup
250 - just barely made it before my grip gave out
280 - 35 ft before I lost it
280 with straps (to practice speed) - lost it immediately twice
280 no straps - 60 ft in ~15-20s PR :head:

Weird that the straps hurt me more than anything. The handles are unknurled and slick. I think most Farmer's handles would be easier to grip so training hard is good.

Car Push - started with car in a slight dip so it would be harder - weight maybe 3k
run 1 - 80ft good pace
run 2 - 120ft was running with it by the end

I felt pretty wrecked for about 30 minutes after the second run.

Well I have a longer frame - relatively - as well. Classic Ecto with longer appendages, so I pull much longer than I should.

Even though this Titan was the 'tops', at that point at least, I didn't receive much from it. A friend of mine Sean Brown, who used to have (not sure if he still does) a few records in the Masters Class of a PL'ing organization gave it to me as he was sponsored. I used it 2-3 times, maybe.

Ain't they fun getting into?

188. I guess we can't make too much fun of you for being small anymore. Post a pic sometime. Nice sig quotes. You've been making enemies with some powerful people :toofunny:

Oh ****, isn't it amazing man?!

:toofunny:

They have about 5 threads, where they literally talk trash about me all day. I don't even have words to describe how amazing it is! And the best part is my rep has gone up because I put those ridiculous quotes in my signature.

Well, I just ate a whole Little Caesar's Hot N' Ready, so give me about a week to post something up. I've been absolutely hammering myself in the gym, especially my mid/upper-back/delt tie-in.

PM me one of those threads. I'll have to check out the Hiroshima-fest.

That Little Caesars sh1t is good for real cheap. I eat pretty clean, but maybe once every 2-3 weeks get one of those.

Yeah, they're amazing. I'll PM you really quick here.

Sunday

"Stone loads" with 220 keg to 48'' in 60s (start with keg on its side and grab it from the bottom lips) - 8 or 9 reps

540 Tire flips for ~60 to 80ft (tire starts in up position) - 33s

Tire Flip medley - stack a 150 tire on top of 540 and flip, flip the 540 again, flip another ~450, repeat (friend restacks tires in meantime)- 4 reps with "700 tire" and 3 with each of the 540 and 450.

12 540 tire flips - 38s (I think it was actually 13 flips, though)

Tuesday

Suited 14'' DL with farmers handles:
560-6 in about 60s

Speed box squats (14'') in suit with straps down (~45s rest between sets):
315-2 for 5 sets

I think I'm actually getting something out of the suit on these and I can still breath fairly well in this somewhat loose suit. Having the handles on the side like a trap bar DL involves more legs so the suit should help more than on regular DL I would think.

Some bad workouts to report:

Thurs.

10.9'' log clean and press each rep (using loop of belt on clean)
225-4 + clean on 5 and missed press
245 - 0 twice - easy clean but horrible presses
175 -10 in maybe 90s (no loop on cleans)

Log clean once and strict press
195-4

Terrible workout. Hopefully, it was just from packing, moving and lack of sleep over the last 2 days. I seemed to have no leg drive power.

Fri.

BW-225.5

Farmer's Walk for 60 ft runs (weight per hand listed)
230 - very fast
280 - 25 ft
280 - 5 ft (tore hand)

I hope this was just the humidity because this was embarrassing. I've never had problems tearing my hands up, but for some reason these farmers handles rip them to shreds. They are very smooth too which makes no sense.

Sunday

BW - 225

Yoke walk (yoke made of plumbing pipes, elbow joints, and flanges)
450 - 50-60ft for 2 runs
540 - 25-30ft
540 - 25 ft (slipped off back)

- I'm not sure how this compares to a regular yoke. I'd guess it's harder, but who knows. I'm still terrible at it. It held together really well.

540 tire flips
1st set - 20
2nd set - 15

Car push - ~100 ft with 1 speed bump
