Hyde’s Strength Odyssey

What's scripture say... "for this reason a man shall leave his mother and father... and the two will be joined in one flesh..." along those lines? It seems natural for men to migrate and move on but our wives tend to hold the apron strings much tighter. When you can have a good relationship with the in-laws it's a blessing. Seems like it's more natural for a man to end up marrying his wife's family than the reverse (if that makes sense). of course you want peace and love to go both ways, but most men I've noticed are born to cut the apron strings more easily than their wives.
Facts, my upbringing was different, didn't really have apron strings to cut. Mom kicked me out to live with my Dad when I was almost 14 so not much to cut there. My wife's family was pretty toxic and used her a lot and it was very unhealthy. So she had to kind of push them out of her life until recently. In their old age they have come to realize the err of their ways and they have at least created some relationship and closure there. So I definitely know what the value is in a lot of ways by experiencing what a lack of it does. Me and my kids are all close. We don't always get along perfectly but we love each other immensely and are always eager to show it.

Oh I love my mother and father immensely, but I could live in a different country and be fine. The desire to be around family is so strong in my wife (and was in my ex as well) that it took me 40 years to understand the difference in a woman's family oriented wiring vs a mans. not that men don't love and appreciate their families, there is just a different need.

Yes, same here, I love my parents immensely, but being away from them does not crush me. I can even tell as much as I dote over my kids, I was ready to have them move out at 18 originally. However she almost had an emotional breakdown at the mere thought of them leaving. We have a big house though so no one has to leave until they are ready to go live their adult lives away from us. They just have to kick in around the house with reasonable rent, and maintain their chores. No free rides. It makes my wife so happy to come home to family in the house and to be honest, now that I let go of the idea that kids who aren't in college should move out at 18, I don't really look forward to the day they move out and move on. Her on the other hand dreads the idea of that happening.

😂😂😂

I find this very relatable on all accounts! Love my step children but also love the quiet and CLEAN house we have now that they're all moved out 😂

Yeah I love my parents and they only live twice as far away, but over 2 hours means we don’t visit them half as often as my in-laws.

Honestly, I’d be fine moving my son away from my parents and just flying in a couple times a year, but he’s too happy with my wife’s family to do that anytime soon. My wife’s family is more fun honestly.

Had my first official PT session today. They were really surprised by how far along I am - I am still 15* short on flexion, and 22* shy of full extension currently.

I definitely do not feel like me going was nearly as productive as the work I’ve been doing solo, but I’m very happy I got to have them evaluate and lay out recommendations, and pick her brain to make better decisions for when & how I return to certain things.

I am going to try to go back next week to touch base, and from there it will depend on my insurance coverage if I continue into the new year.

I fired my PT when I asked him if I could hit a particular hike or gym (local hike to our region, 1200ft elevation gain over 1.25miles). He said oh no, no probably not for at least another month or two.

What I didn't tell him is I had already done it a few times that week. this was when I tore my left ACL.

After so many years I now view PTs as more of a resource than anything. I’m pretty good at knowing my body, and how I recover, and am able to feel most things out when recovering from a procedure. All though I have found a great Chiropractor that is very knowledgeable and up to speed on most things, and he’s willing to learn some things that he might not know as much about. He definitely helps with this old back and neck.

I asked her a lot, and she told me a lot just based on what she didn’t say, compared to my findings, compared to what the two surgeons have said.

I’m the one running this show, and it’s now apparent that it’s going my responsibility to get my mobility back - nobody is doing this for me. And it’s going to be my responsibility to call my shots, so I feel good knowing I don’t need to wait for help that isn’t coming. Hopefully I can still use them for some progressive evaluation.

She also mentioned it was a truly impressive amount of stuff they took out of my elbow

My ex just had a shoulder surgery and the only thing I stressed to her, since clearly she won't agree with me on much, was to never settle for a PT or surgeon who's goal isn't to make you a BETTER athlete than you were before. And if one says "you don't be doing X anymore", fire them and find a better one.

Don’t you guys hate it when your wife brings home a 172lb fire hydrant “just in case it’s in the odd-object carry medley at the Arnold”?

She’s just prepared….you never know when you might have to carry one, and the Arnold makes sense. My wife used to bring home stray animals….I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t be able to carry a 172lbs fire hydrant, so I never had to worry about that. lol

I'm not sure I could carry that !

We have been going over there a lot, probably every other week or third week in recent months, which I think everyone really enjoys a lot & is great for the family. My son really loves going over, running around with the dog and seeing his grandparents & aunt, and we all like watching him play and being together to share a big dinner.

Grandpa has been building fires now that it’s cold, he has football on, Grandma is always orchestrating some kind of good meal. Last week was London broil, potatoes, a veggie-beef stew, rolls, corn on the cob, caramel apple pie (my favorite these days). Yesterday we had homemade chili & Dutch apple pie, cheese & crackers.

I always end up kicked back in the recliner with a full belly sipping a couple cups of coffee across from the fire while my son plays before I drive us back - a zen moment for sure.

I am really fortunate to have the in-laws I do. I truly enjoy spending time with them & am always excited to see them - having such love for them makes our marriage much better, I believe.
This is golden right here. Our family had a similar relationship with my in-laws. Enjoy the time as much as you can, while you can. Unfortunately, both my wife and I have lost a parent recently and it's not the same for us or our kids. But I'm grateful for those times we did have.

My in-law's were the best, sorry they are both gone.

That is awesome, and the real question is where did she come across what appears to be a fire hydrant from the 50's? It's a great find for sure.

Yeah I’m always ultimately responsible for moving this stuff around most of the time…I gotta keep my strength up just to keep my garage from getting out of control!

90 min trip into the middle of nowhere IL cornfields to get it from an old farming couple.

$50 on FB marketplace. They normally go for $150-300, but I don’t think these people could move it and just wanted it gone.

Oh snap. What happened? Nagging injury repair or something acute?

Fun morning, first time benching now that it’s 2 weeks post op. Kept it incredibly light, super close grip to maximally work flexion & build the weakest spot from the bottom up. Could have obviously just kept adding weight but that’s not the point at all - it’s movement exposure, mobility, bloodflow. Felt really good.

I bet the old couple were shocked she just reached down and snatched it up…..priceless.

Good deal….yep it’s about keeping things moving and that mobility helps build up and speed up the healing process.

Hmmmm, interesting idea. You a believer or think it’s a gimmick or too soon to tell?
Right, if this thing is legit it might have to be my next barbell. I can see the value in it for me if it works as advertised.

How much whip/flex are you getting with it?

How much whip/flex are you getting with it?

Zero whip with just 60 added pounds, but it has a 400lb max rating so I’m sure it will at real loads - I strictly used it because it’s full size, Olympic sleeves to use regular plates/clamps, & only 7.5lbs due to fiberglass construction. I wanted to start super light.

I’d like to use the Earthquake Bar soon when I’m lifting more; that’s the one designed to hang plates/kbs with bands.

Mid day, plenty of coffee:

Bodyweight 231.4 after a 24 hour fast. Finally made it to 105kg! I definitely look leaner, and weak

Bloods looked really good, lots of positives. I’m very happy with lipids, glucose metabolism, kidneys, liver, inflammation markers, prolactin. TSH was elevated for me (3.5) but I’m losing weight & fat so I’m not concerned enough to pull a panel.

Estrogen was at 60 and total test at 860 on ~120mg test e, 80mg mast e, plus 100mg NPP, so I think dropping the NPP and bumping Masteron will inhibit some aromatization and tweak the T:E ratio more favorably. Probably try to be more consistent with carnitine & zinc administration and might add a low dose of boron back in. I just used NPP for 2 weeks post surgery.

One big red flag: even with platelets dropping from 400 to 340 since last blast peak, my hemoglobin, RBC, & therefore hematocrit has continued to slowly creep up (now 18, 6.0, & 53). Iron is at a solid 135 with good ferritin, so for the first time in over 2 years being on I made an appointment to donate next week. I could resume IP6 and try to inhibit iron absorption to reduce blood production, but the fastest answer is to just dump a pint. Then use IP6 again preventatively like I had been.

Sounds like you got a real good handle on this !!

Off Topic, but are you still helping JTMass ?

Hey @Hyde , bro
As we wrap up 2022 almost I just wanted to stop for a second and let you know how much I appreciate your constructive criticism, support and encouragement on these boards. I think you are wise beyond your years and a large part of my PR today I blame on you. Thanks for sharing and supporting the guys around here

I remember your discussion about boron a long time ago. What were your personal findings, why did you stop it, why are you bringing it back, and why at a small dose?

Yes I am. He has been rehabbing a knee injury and just now cleared to resume training it, moved cities, was traveling a lot for work, and getting his health in check. We just wrapped up a little minicut the last ~month, he’s on holiday now & visiting family, then at the new year he’s beginning a big off-season push and we’ll see what he can build getting back to some legs and bumping the gear & food up!

Thank you; I’m glad I was able to help in some way somehow! I’m sure I come off as a douche sometimes - my entire family agrees I’ve always been too blunt, to the point of being rude, but if I am I can only say that it wasn’t what I wanted.

I really love seeing people succeed, so my intention is always to be helpful if possible.

It can lower SHBG and therefore increase free testosterone. It’s safe at the doses necessary and an incredibly cheap mineral.

Taking blast levels of steroids, using DHT compounds like Mast & Primo, or especially using orals (like the 6 weeks of Anavar I finished my last blast with) all will drive SHBG down low, so boron is more for natural guys or those at TRT types of levels looking to optimize.

However, I didn’t check my SHBG, I’m not going to, and I have a bunch of boron laying around, so I’ll toss some in. My sexual function is really great currently so I know SHBG cannot be so low right now that it’s causing any issues there. That’s the main potential issue with having SHBG totally crushed, but it’s got to be extremely low for that to happen AND gear can’t be high for that problem to present itself. If you take enough androgens, it probably doesn’t matter even if SHBG is floored (but I’m not certain on that).

In your case, just take ~10mg daily for several months if you wish to try to get more out of your TRT. You typically see around 6-20mg for various length periods for this purpose.

Snow here, so first Thursday night in the garage in many weeks. -7* with a -30* windchill seemed like the perfect opportunity! 🥶Horse liniment, leggings, neoprene shorts & sleeves, sweatpants, tank top, heavy tshirt, hoody, beanie, and with the heater roaring it was still so cold I could see my entire body steaming as I trained. Still, hit new bests on elbow range of motion and got some great training in the books.

I’m glad if I have been able to with anything!

And yeah he is in a pretty good place I feel. He’s on 1/4 of the gear and no orals compared to his initial off-season before his last show, and even with a knee injury & all the life in the way he’s still set lifetime rep deadlift PRs and really carrying a lot of good muscle.

I am excited to see what he will do if he lines it all up in full swing like he plans to do shortly. Hoping for some good size!

Justin's arms are crazy !!

@Hyde, I will jump on the thank you bandwagon for all of your assistance and knowledge you spread around here.

Regarding your honesty and bluntness, I don’t think you come off as rude at all. I’ve seen some come on the forum and offer advice in a douchy way, and you aren’t one.

Regarding Boron, thanks. I’ve been taking 12g since before TRT and for quite some time, so I’ll start monitoring my SHBG levels more closely for whether I need to adjust it.

Agreed, you always come off as someone with good intentions. I have never taken anything you said as being rude or even that blunt to be honest. However in person you might carry a tone that sounds a little different. :)

Where is this weather? I have to layer up every workout in my garage.

I do long johns, shorts, sweat pants.

A 32 heat base layer, this thing is gold!! They have 32 cool for spring and summer. Made of the cheapest thinnest material and can be found at bjs. A 2 pack is around 19$. The 32 heat long sleeve is all I wear under my flannel during the winter in my day job. The 32 cool I keep in my boxers drawer and literally when I open the drawer its cold.

Anyways 32 heat long sleeve, sweat band belt, zip up sauna jacket, hoodie, stocken cap, and sometimes a sauna suit under sweat pants and hoodie on cardio days.

I love working out in the cold Temps at 3am. I always ask myself, is anyone else even up right now?(except Rocket) and what other fool is doing this in freezing Temps?

Yeah I think I’m less patient in real life, so sometimes people get the first pass instead of something more thought out

Central IL - big cold front blowing through over the Christmas weekend, about 20* colder than usual. Windchill is currently “up” to -27* and blowing strong! I about lost my fingers earlier cleaning off the cars for too long

Thanks, I’ll check them out! Always good to have the right gear for the job.

Also, McTarnahan’s aka Jack’s Blue Heat liniment - that stuff is awesome to rub on knees or anywhere you want to preheat. Not a hot capsaicin cream/analgesic, just gently warms it up some.

I know nothing about Boron but my SHBG numbers are 43-43 so I guess I'm good ?

Na I get it but it's been about 8 years or longer since I had a good coach. I was 100% with him yelling and telling me, nope! Your done, form went to hell, stop. Lol.

I loved coaching the things I knew and was good at, but powerlifting despite my 25 years of being a gym rat I have to admit is in many ways new to me as a focus. And the most rewarding I'm finding.
