Giving People Advice.

BEAST73

Well-known member
I’am at the Gym working out,and a Guy walked up and start giving Me advice about training. I listen to him,and at the end of his conversation. I turn to him and said, Look at You, and look at Me. This guy was like 275lbs overweight and trying to give Me advice. Please!

It’s a lot of Guys always giving people advice and they are not in shape, nor produce self progression.

Have This every happen to You at the Gym, or here on AM?

If it's a one time thing, I just let it go, although now I train in my garage and no longer have the issue at all. And sure there are plenty of out-of-shape know-it-alls, but there are also dudes who may be overweight because they did something while lifting and it left them unable to train properly and now they may be sincerely trying to keep others from making the same mistake.

True. But this guy was telling me how to train and eat. It’s not happening.

Happens all to often. I see it all the time. There was two chicks the other day one out of shape, and the other looked like an out of work stripper with a beer gut. Yet she was giving the out of shape girl advise. I will just never understand it

Oh boy. Yeah, it's extra annoying when they know absolutely nothing about you. They just assume what your history and goals are.
Right, the trainer at the gym I go to asked one day if he could help me out. I told him when he could bench my bodyweight maybe he could. Then he said he was cutting for a competition.Invalid Link Removed

Once I was deep in my wife and some guy came out the closet and said I was doing it all wrong. He was right, I really was doing it wrong!

Yep a guy was telling me to look up while I deadlift. I keep my head neutral and in line with my spine. This head position makes it so easy to activate my lumbar spine for some reason. I just started doing it and deadlifting has gotten so much easier. Anyway, just one instance of a guy telling me to do something wrong thinking he’s right lol

Someone tried to give you advice? (That's funny)
I'm considering a membership at L.A. Fitness because my gym closed and the idiots that work and go there are going to piss me off. I miss having my own key and going whenever I want.

Nobody has yet tried to give me advice on training. Maybe they don't think I speak English? I had a customer aproach me and asked if I spoke English, so I said in my best fake French/English "Why, yes, are you having issues with the etymology of some words? because I can help you work through the difficulty." it sounded more like:

Way yez, Ah yee-ew aving ees-yoos wid-dee ay-tee-mah-oh-jee uhv thase weirds? bay-cooz-eh ahhh kin elp yee-oo weirk-eh thu-roo-eh thee deef-icultay....

I don't like rude people.

Its so hard when you see people deadlifting and squatting with **** form.

There is a difference in saying, "Hey you're wrong and I am right about everything." and going up to someone with bad form on a major movement that could hurt them and saying, "Hey man, I noticed you were doing X, there's the potential for that to cause some soft-tissue damage, tear something, etc. If you just tweak your form a little bit like this, it would completely alleviate that."

Also, if you are gonna do it, don't make a scene or say it loud enough for the whole gym to hear and embarrass them. I would 100% want someone to come up and correct me politely on something if I was going to hurt myself.

The worst part about my gym is the trainers there are hired through a different company, so they are super annoying and try and talk to you while you are lifting or running. They're always going up to my girlfriend when she is running because she doesn't have headphones in and trying to talk to her and get her to sign up for their personal training. They also all look like ****. I told her to just tell them she's not interested and point at me and say, "If I did want advice, my boyfriend would be more than happy to give it to me. He's told me he also has some pointers for you." If they want to be annoying, I told her to be a bitch.

Sometimes I hang around Sport Clips and tell people what kind of haircut they should get.

Flat top. It's always a Flat top

OP - Bite into his neck. Rip a piece of meat out and swallow - Make a MESS.

Yes, people can be annoying. I like that you were blunt with that fat f***... In my 20's when annoying people w/ training advise would surpass my threshold, I would just look at them and request - "Let's both flex" with eye contact. Fack that idiot - What a goof

I’ve literally only ever had this once. I was training in a hotel gym while away with work. It wasn’t the greatest gym so I didn’t what I normally do in that situation and just drop the weight, focus on form, leave a few in the tank and make it a maintenance session.

Only one other bloke in there, absolutely butching a single arm dB row, looked like he was trying to start a lawnmower, back was like a cat who’s seen a cucumber and he was using a 40lb dB......but I see stuff like this all the time and ignore it so no dramas.

Anyway, I decide to bench on the rubbish fixed stand bench. couple of warm up sets and threw 154lbs to do sets of 10-12 ish, mid set I hear ‘you need to put the clips on the bar mate’ (mid ****ing set this genius starts giving advice), I finish my 12 and just say politely ‘oh it’s fine, I’m not pushing the weight here at all mate’ (I very rarely use clips anyway).

Anyway, before my next set he calls over, ‘you shouldn’t use that bench without a spot, it’s a bit awkward’ (now I’m his defence the way the hooks were lined up wasn’t great and if I’d been using 220 or something he’s got a point as reracking was fiddly, but I’m not using a heavy wait. At this point the I say slight firmer, ‘I’m fine thank you, this is a lightweight for me so I’ll have no problems’

It ended a bit frosty though, the idiot then mutters something about know it all guys just going to get hurt, at which point I highlighted I was s qualified pt and would correct the multiple form errors he’d commuted since I’d been in there.

He didn’t like that to be honest lol

Man I have seen a ton of guys that claim to know so much, but in real life they are only salesman trying to sell a product. No matter how cheap it is

there is no one on this website immune to advice...if having to belittle someone else helps you achieve becoming the next Mr. O, then so be it...otherwise, it is so much more easier to respectfully decline said advice, and/or ignore it all together.

True. Just because somebody doesn't follow their own advice, doesn't automatically make that advice incorrect. To me it's always amazing the confidence that some people give their advice with, but then are simply too lazy to follow up their words with action for themselves.

Exactly!

Exactly. If more detail is needed. What I understood is that OP is annoyed that this Fat F***er interrupted him while he was working out, to tell him how to get in shape.

OP did say that he listened, didn't sound like that fat f*** scored any points with OP tho

now that I think about it. He prolly got hungry, messed up his mood, and got jealous.

people give unsolicited advice countless times a day, referencing endless topics of discussion...the fact that OP had to make a thread on the internet bashing this supposed "overweight" stranger, is far more humorous than this same stranger's inability to follow his own advice.

And you like to give unsolicited comments...if you dont like what is being said on a thread. Dont comment. Just like your comment in the NFL thread saying I was talking sh*t about last year. When all I stated was y'all all where talking sh*t last year, and this year y'all aint got sh*t to say. Sometimes your comments are just not needed. If reading comprehension isn't your strong point you should stay away from replying.

I thought it was about annoyance...

Are you the guy that was trying to give Me advice at the gym?

His literal word for word response to this stranger was, "Look at you, and look at me"...anyone with common sense would consider that a belittling response...but reading comprehension is supposedly my weakness.

Why not defuse a situation with one response, without saying many words.

Well how would you have responded to a obese gentleman giving you advise in the gym....something like this I only assume "Dear sir, I am quietly trying to enjoy my workout, and you are currently invading my space, and hurting my feelings...See I am a millenial, and I get butt hurt very easily, now if you kindly leave I will not cry for my mother, who I still live with"

OMG! KML!!

I already answered this question if you read my very first post...decline said advice, or ignore it all together, which is still better than a low blow response.

and it's always easier for mentally weak people like you to throw insults around on the internet.....it's not like you can hold a candle to a single session of mine in the weight room, even on my worst day.

Yomo, Sorry there is misunderstanding. I don't disagree that knowledge can be obtained from listening. I don't believe anyone did disagree. Your right no one is immune to advise. OP didn't like being interrupted while working out. The guy was freak - sounds off. You know? Beats to a different drum... I bet if this guy approached OP in a manor that was likable, actually said something that would of have been beneficial. Most likely it would of been appreciated.

Key word he got annoyed.
