This is something of a red flag here I discover on my own.

China has only had some 100 flu deaths a year out of half a million globally which I think is ridiculous.

On globaltimes which is the main CCP official news source, on January they posted an article on the influenza statistics suggesting (back in 9/2019) they should up there annual influenza deaths from 100 up to 80,000!!!!!

So all the sudden after all these years they want people to know 10s of thousands are dropping dead from the flu?

The statistical methods used by the Chinese CDC should be revised, as deaths from pneumonia caused by the flu, for example, are not counted, the observer said.

Observers called for an improved statistical approach, and encouraged the public to get an annual flu shot.

For the 35 years from 65-100 the average death rate is around 6-7%. For the 35 years from 20-55 it is about 3.7%. But, as Dixon points out, don't people over 65 presumably die at more than twice the rate of someone 20-55? It looks to me like people between 20-55 actually have a higher relative risk of death than older people based on that data...since they usually don't die at very high rates to begin with and 3.7% loss of that age group would be a huge loss that normally does not occur.

I see what you're saying and it's a fair interpretation. Since that group may have a lower baseline you see that fatality risk as a larger net increase. It's possible for sure.

On a side note, "Naked Statistics" is an amazing book for anyone looking to learn the basics (regression to the mean, interference, regression analysis, etc). Read it a few months ago to brush up since it's been a few years since I took biometry, and I enjoyed it.

I would note though, that there's basically a doubling of risk per group. So another moral of the story is that if you catch it at those older age groups, yes you're likely to have other comorbidities at that age, you still have a much higher likelihood of dying to COVID than those younger.

So you could argue the impact on younger people is as significant but my point stands that the older you are the more likely you are to be killed off by it which is what I think the initial point Dixon was trying to refute by saying they simply die at that age anyway.

Politicians are the lowest forms of life. Every single one of them. If they want to give out 1.5T why aren’t they coming up solutions to pull 1.5T from somewhere else? This endless printing of money is going to be a disaster.

this is just opinion on my part, but i think they are gearing up for a bad winter flu/covid season...in most years many people go to work when sick because they have no choice-no work no money to pay bills/eat...many households live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford lengthy time off work...covid adds a different dimension to this, workplaces are going to enforce time off for sickness, the stimulus package is going to be vital for survival to many families and businesses, imo.

2 weeks living off basic unemployment would be devastating to many families, if they are going to enforce quarantine they will need to at least up unemployment to $200 additional per week---$600 was excessive and uncalled for.

Yes...the Biden plan! Let’s not forget attempting to mandate masks at all times we are outside the house. He fails to understand the chaos (protests) that would cause in itself. American citizens are what they are, and they don’t react well to being told what to do. We are lucky to have the level of compliance we have now when people are indoors. No mask, no entry at businesses, schools (while that lasts), is really all we can shoot for and it’s essentially where we have been for quite some time anyway.

On another note, Biden and the democratic party impressed me by wishing Trump and Melania a speedy recovery, as well as removing negative election ads. It’s the first move I have seen by the party that made sense and wasn’t completely based on their own best interest. They took the high road for once and it’s surely about time!

Haha, as with any political discussion it does get heated in here, but I still respect everyone that participates.

we are in agreement-mostly...the additional $200 i am in favor of would cover those who get commisions/tips and frequent overtime...that additional $600 was over the top, actually it was stupid, imo.

Absolutely. But then again I think a representative of a certain location should be paid no more than the prevailing average wage of their constituents.
