Well, here we are finally. I have been intrigued with this eating method for a few years now and by circumstance, it begins today. I started a trest blast on Dec 2, stopped 3 days ago due to Morton’s Neuroma in my right foot. Not one to waste precious oils. I have returned to baseline TRT protocol.

I have read many success stories in regards to neuroma inflammation being eliminated via this diet. I am here to try it so as to save myself from surgery or more invasive measures. Doing blood work prior to this endeavor was my aim, but it will be skewed as I still have large esters clearing out and I am not waiting to begin this method. Bloodwork coming in a few months.

Current body weight is 225, my training will be conducive to ability; deadlifts and squats are off the table currently. FML. I have never done anything like this before so it should be interesting. I will post food pornz, thoughts, carb anger, and results within this thread.

All day:

8 slices bacon
5 eggs
1 mug oxtail broth
1 lb ground beef

Nothing magical today. I have a 36 oz tomahawk in the thaw for tomorrow. Night time is when I start feeling carb cravings. Real bad right now. I see how this could be a headache the first week

Subbed!

Carnivore is definitely something I might try one day, be interested to see how you feel on it.

Last night I took a few to get to sleep. Wife was eating spaghetti nest to me and I could smell the carbs. I hate spaghetti. I would have devoured that spaghetti. Pretty crazy how I feel like a carb crackhead this early in, but the cravings have subsided so far this morning and I’m feeling good at 24 hours in. Foot still swollen from neuroma but that has been the case for a little over a week.

Not currently, but thanks for the tip! I’m going to try to tough it out, let’s see how it goes.
If you have never fasted or been keto, you need MASSIVELY more sodium with a lack of carboHYDRATES present to help transport & hold fluid where necessary.

Salt everything, put some salt in your water or drink extra broth, pickle juice, a flavored salt mix like Ketolytes, something.

Oxtail is delicious!

Jamie Lewis’s Apex diet years ago, the big thing was to fast/keep cals low in the day then a very high fat protein eaten until full at night most nights of the week. Basically, you can endure whatever in the day knowing right before bed you’re going to eat ribs, tbone, ribeye or the like til completion before bed. So you always go to bed alright, not tossing with cravings. You have simply eaten too much fat to be hungry at all.

Great advice ^^^^ I did keto for about 8 months and loved it. My energy was through the roof. The “flu” part does suck but as Hyde said, extra salt in everything and pickle juice works!

I tried a lot of electrolyte drinks but the first one I really like is this one. it doesn't taste bad and it's sweetened with stevia (no sucralose).

I'm gonna buy more flavors soon.

That’s no joke. My body had been screaming for sodium. Salt has been going in/on everything, in excess .
I like this late night meal concept, I could see how that could drastically help

Mortons Lite Salt for the win... Don't forget about potassium, and good luck! Keto is actually easy dieting once you get over the initial hump. Once your body is fat adapted energy becomes more consistent, and cravings drop a lot due to less insulin swings.

Too much potassium to sodium. This is ideal for a regular individual not in keto. I would reverse the ratios for keto, speaking extremely generally.
probably explains why it tastes good. i cant stand salt water

While trying to up sodium you might try upgrading cheap chuck steaks to filet type tenderness by covering the top of a steak or roast with kosher salt for 1 hour per inch of thickness then rinse meat and put rest of seasoning on minus anymore salt. It is already in the meat. The meat will be extremely tender, and you will get a nice dose of sodium with it.

Definitely gonna try this on some cheaper cuts and see if I can save myself some doll-hairs.

Yeah it is pretty amazing how much the collagen breaks down from that.

Funny you mention this. I always salt my steaks at least 6 hrs before. Then a few hours before cooking I add other seasonings. Went extra heavy on the initial salt this time around.

what do you do for post workout nutrition? I still did whey with carnivore but I guess that's cheating. could do milk with raw eggs mixed in to be more of a purist

Today I will be finding out. I haven’t trained in a week due to my foot. I typically do whey but with this new eating method I feel like whey would just make me shart myself. I will let you know in a few hours (about the food choice, not the shart).

Anecdotally, how long does it take one to reach ketosis?

I’ve read 3 days, 2 weeks, 297.8 hrs…..

Perhaps also user dependent?
Ive read 3-5days depending on genetics, experience (people who have been keto can often return faster) and liver health.

i was thinking.. zero sugar and its sweet.. might help with the cravings
I’m getting better. Last night when I was cleaning up after cooking I layed eyes on some chocolate covered pretzels. I wanted to stuff them all in my face in one giant handful, but somehow I said no.
Cravings not really present this morning, let’s see how the day goes. I just keep telling myself: “don’t be a pussy”

Interesting. That seems to be the most prevalent number I find when reading about it. I have not got “keto flu” symptoms yet. Slight headache at the end of the first day when I could smell carbs at night, but that’s about it so far. And I have been super strict, as in cold turkey. It’s weird.

duchaine felt the "keto flu" was more about low cals during keto than the actual macro intake. so if you start feeling like crap try taking in some extra meat/fat

Yeah remember the goal right now is low inflammation, not dropping 40lbs, so make sure you eat enough. You’re allowed to eat, just selective about the food lol

I've done keto several times but only got the flu first time. Body chemistry adapts and once adapted seems to be easier to ketosis again.

my understanding is this: ketosis is based on ketone levels in your blood. those are put in your blood when you burn fat for energy. if you don't eat enough fat, you won't have enough ketones to see the benefits.

so you really need to stack on the fat. make sure to put butter on your steak, coffee, etc.

the recent Joe Rogan + Dr. Rhonda Patric podcast was pretty interesting as she talks about her keto experience where she measured ketones a lot

Body weight: 222lbs

Went in to this session fasted, last meal was my 36 oz tomahawk ribeye at 8pm last night (16 hrs ago). I maybe cheated, I used 1ml of Apex Triton pwo .

I didn’t know what to expect performance wise as I have not lifted in a week and completely turned my diet upside down for the past 3 days. Had a quick 10 sec bout of lightheaded-ness (very minor, euphoric even) mid workout but nothing more. I am mildly satisfied so far, my foot is also less inflamed and I am not gimping around like a fool (as much).

Here is today’s session:

Mini band:
Pullaparts x 30
Face pulls x 20
Tri press downs x 50
W holds x 15

45° Incline bench, power bar, TnG:
45x10
135x10
175x10
205x5
225x3x4
245x2

Bench, power bar, comp grip, paused:
135x10
225x6
315x4
335x2
355x1
375x1
385x1 ugly bar path

Reverse hyper:
+45x10
+90x10x4 sets

CG bench w/ fat grips:
135x10x2 sets
175x10x2 sets
