And I'm back!
Great to see all the chatter in this thread while I was gone. Helps to know that if I ever dissappear, perhaps this will live on! Think I'm also caught up now in everyone's logs...
This will be a vacation update primarily:
First off, Yellowstone is
unreal. If you've ever thought of going, just do it. Particularly for us folks who live in very different parts of the country, just seeing the mountains in the distance even when you land in Montana is beautiful. We were gone for 5 total days, two were travel on either end just because of going essentially coast to coast.
We had 3 full days driving through and hiking in the park. Yellowstone is
massive. Easily could've spent 10 days to two weeks if you really want to explore and find hidden gems. But with such a variety of landscapes - from waterfalls, to grassy valleys, mountain peaks, geysers and other geothermal features, rock formations that literally look cut from the mountainside, deep pine forests - there's more to see in one area than you could ever imagine exists on the planet.
Got in over 20k steps in two of the three days in the park, due to all the walking/hiking. Kids did surprisingly well with a lot of it, even doing the multiple switchback hike down to the brink of the lower falls. A 600 ft drop in elevation in about 0.3-0.4 miles! I will say the mountain air (fresh) and elevation (got winded much faster!) was something.
Now, of course 3 out of the 4 of us were sick during this whole trip. Turns out my kids and wife both had strep and we're on antibiotics the whole time.
There were definitely moments during this trip that tested me. Thankfully, we ended the trip on a high note and everyone genuinely enjoyed the vacation!
Eating was all over the map. Had some great BBQ in West Yellowstone, and an awesome Huckleberry cheeseburger back in Bozeman. Everything in between was sort of whatever we could carry with us on the go, PBJ sandwiches, cheese and crackers, etc. Since it was end of season, and lot of normal services were already closed up. But we made due, and I focused primarily on getting in enough calories to fuel all of the activity.
We honestly had the perfect weather. Cool/cold in the mornings, warm and high 60s by the time we hit mid day. Perfect for us getting out early and shedding layers throughout the day. Not a cloud in the sky!
Also, driving back to Bozeman leaving the park, we saw a ton of ranches and open land. Now I get the appeal of all of you fellas homesteading. I could honestly see moving out into the great wide open, especially having such natural wonder to be able to access at any time. A completely different life than what I live today. A true moment of wanderlust, but what a moment it was!
Here's just one photo from one area for your viewing pleasure!
Back to reality:
Couldn't force myself out of bed at the initial alarms, but did opt to focus on some cardio. Hopped on the bike to get in 31 mins, 173 cals instead. Just some caffeine and yohimbine this AM to fuel up/wake up.
Tomorrow is back to (lifting) business!
