Segansational's Motivation Log

Well, some good news and some bad news:

The good news is that we head out on vacation Sunday for a week at the lake! Already have got myself a gym lined up for the week so I can keep up with my fitness routine, just like last time.

Also, it's my birthday coming up this week. Bought myself a Hume Body Pod scale as a present. It's supposed to be about +/-2% from a DEXA, although independent reviews cite closer to 3-5%.

The bad news. Hume told me I'm a fat @$$. 25.1% bodyfat!! Not going to lie, I knew that my renpho scale underestimated, but I thought I'd clock in around 16-17%, max 18% or so, certainly not >20%!

For comparison:

Renpho measurements this morning
Weight 153.4#, BF 13.8%

Hume measurements this morning
Weight 153.7#, BF 25.1%

Difference: 0.3#, 11.3% - holy airball batman!

So, had a minute of wallowing in misery this morning. Obviously this week coming on vacation won't do any good for my body comp, but looks like I'll need to hard cut coming off this trip. I'm legit just an out of shape, average dad bod apparently.

Based on a -1% BF weight loss per week, I need a true 16 week cut to get down to roughly a REAL 14% BF goal.

Anyways, knowledge is power and data is cool, so yeah.

From your last pictures that you had posted I doubt you are 25%…that doesn’t sound accurate to me.What does your waist measure?
Happy Birthday 😎👍

I personally don't think the bodyfat % is even important, personally. but you were not 25% on Apr 9th.

In fact on Apr 9th I'd say you're on the cusp of getting shredded, at that point where probably 3 months with a coach could get you to 10%.

If you can run a mile, squat, deadlift, bench, and OHP then you're probably a healthy functional adult.

I agree with @gphagan1 what is your waist at?

If your pecs stick out further than your stomach and your stomach doesn't flop over your belt and you can still see your dick you aren't fat. yet.

I think most people tend to be a lot higher bodyfat than they think. I know I am too fat to worry about a body fat percentage. My abs start coming in around 18-20%, and everyone guesses I am 15 or less at that point. By the time I hit 10-12 my abdomen looks like I am 8% but my back looks a lot higher. You really can't guess without seeing someone's whole body, and even then it is going to be hard to get close unless they are really lean. Even then you can't really guess without knowing what they look like RIPPED.

@Segansational, who cares what # that app said. You should not be any more or less satisfied with your physique than when you thought you were 14% bf, or found out it might really be 25%. You look the same as you did yesterday when you thought you were 14%. You weren't a Super Average Dad Bod yesterday.... Nothing has changed but your perception of the situation. So don't let it get into your head.

Also, your dismorphia is showing there. Outside of the bodyfat percentage what part of your body looks like you don't lift, or doesn't look better than the average high school athlete for that matter. I see very built arms, good shoulders, lats, and chest, how is this a DadBod?

annnnnnd if we go back a little further!

he was pretty skinny in the old days. women are more into rhinos than abs anyways
Meh, I think we all tend to say what women like but the reality is some women prefer abs, some women prefer rhinos, but they all seem to respond to confidence.

I got my BF measured and was shocked to see how high it was. People were always telling me you don't look big. Yes, I am. I'm too heavy and BF was much higher than expected. I'm working diligently to lower it.

Very well said here!

Whatever the number actually is does not change the mirror, and you have made progress and unequivocally look like you train your body and have consideration for what you are eating. You look fit!

Anyway, I think it’s cool that since you like the data now you have something more specific so you can track changes more accurately hopefully over time. You don’t even need to believe the number, just trust the increments are accurate as you change. This should be a helpful tool.

Good luck getting packed up and everything ready for Sunday - I always find the final 24 hours to be more stressful in our house as we prep to leave for a trip, so that’s a time I try to be extra mindful of my actions & words.

Appreciate you fellas all weighing (semi-pun intended) here!

Good question. I'll have to measure. I have one of those old school myotapes from back in the day. Where do you measure, across the navel?

Yeah, interestingly I was only 4.3# lighter there than I am today. But I definitely have gained fat particularly in the midsection. Flexed though I still see the outline of my top 3 abs. Lower abdomen is still pretty fluffy.

4-5# though on my frame just makes a difference since my overall weight is not a huge number given my height.

Good point on mindset. But it was a little tough to see that I'm basically comparatively average to the common man - given how much emphasis I put into training, supplementation, nutrition, etc.

I think the reality is, that like most over achievers or driven personality types, I have an underlying "fear" of just being average. So these numbers only fed into that anxiety.

Either way, not letting it get me down. Like Seth Feroce says, "I don't have problems, I just have more work to do."

I got my BF measured and was shocked to see how high it was. People were always telling me you don't look big. Yes, I am. I'm too heavy and BF was much higher than expected. I'm working diligently to lower it.

I think a little reality check is always good once in a while to kick us into gear!

I appreciate that. Yeah, I track just about everything and love looking at trends and such. So, if nothing else, this gives me more data to consume - evaluate and then adjust off of.

No workout this morning! Have a bunch of yardwork to do before we leave, and dealing with that crushed fence finally.
