the past week we went from hot sun, to warm rain for a couple days, which the plants needed. then wind, which blew the plants dry, before we came back to hot direct sun. which means less scorching most likely on the plants. I thought that was really interesting and like a perfectly planned out mother nature event. We're also getting the heat & humidity here in the northeast. 94 yesterday, 93 today and it stormed something crazy last night too. So it's just like walking out into a steam room.
It’s been raining daily here to where you couldn’t mow - everyone’s grass is jungle mode. Today is dry & sunny before more rain this weekend though, so today’s mowing day for sure!the past week we went from hot sun, to warm rain for a couple days, which the plants needed. then wind, which blew the plants dry, before we came back to hot direct sun. which means less scorching most likely on the plants. haha yeah thats the worst, april/may can be a challenging yard time out here...It’s been raining daily here to where you couldn’t mow - everyone’s grass is jungle mode.
Will get some updates and pics of garden and building update. Time seems to be flying this summer!
always a catch 22 when you have a service like that. When our guy comes out occasionally I always think I won't appreciate it as much as doing it myself, but then I get home and the place looks beautiful and I really enjoy it. before the inflation period I had setup a deal with him to do our property every other week (with my son doing the alternating weeks as part of his chores) but we started cutting back a few years ago. now days I typically only have him come out once in the spring and fall to help with a big clean up.Man, we are on the every other week mow plan and this last two weeks with rain, then sun, then rain, then sun, and now rain again my yard is almost a foot tall. They should be out this week but dang it... I kind of miss owning my own mower when it gets long like this.
Always mulch brother; you’re throwing away a perfect combination of everything your grass needs if you bag! Saves you effort and promotes longevity for the inevitable drought times.haha yeah thats the worst, april/may can be a challenging yard time out here...
I've switched over to mulching with a slightly longer yard this year. so it's staying much greener which is nice, and typically its only emptying one bag instead of like 6-8 lol.
its so true. I had a hard time staying on top of it well enough in the past to be able to mulch without giant clumps of grass all over the yard, but with a fresh blade, little bit longer grass, and staying on top of it the grass is definitely greener this year!Always mulch brother; you’re throwing away a perfect combination of everything your grass needs if you bag! We mow our grass within every 10 days, whether it needs it or notits so true. I just found out recently some people give their clippings to their chickens too. even though we are largely anti-chemical I did bite the bullet and do a single weed and feed this year to nip a few dandelions and clover in the bud so I won't be feeding that grass to the chickens I eat lol
I think we're in for a drought again. Temps are mild, but no rain in sight. the rain we did get, was perfectly timed between hot periods so everything grew like crazy. When I first met my wife this yard had no grass and was like the sahara desert lol. Neighbors and kids gave me a hard time for how much work I put into making a green yard, but a green yard does help keep the ambient temp down a bit!Plus we had a long draught last summer, and the feed aspect prior helps nourish it to better handle the inevitable long brown dormant period it will be faced with.
Man I’m just not having enough hours in the day. After work try to get things done or have something to work on and then lift and man it’s 10 already![]()
All weekend I battled this old girl, she been sitting for so long the cylinder seals dry rotted so I need to tear it apart and rebuild them. We had 10 acres of oats that I cut and needed to round bale. Luckily a neighbor is going to swing by and get it for me.
Tractor is a International 1086- baler is a Hesston 5580saw this homesteader on I think youtube talking about how the reality of it is that you never feel caught up, things are always a mess, and you prioritize by which fire needs to be put out first and that feels so relevant to my life lol.
Is that a massey? I've been shopping the subcompacts like the Kubota BX and the Deere 1025s but dad and I both think that a 24hp is going to be way too small for the land I need to clear. I just dont' want to commit to a legit full size... but I think I'm going to have to. or at least a 30 series deer in that 33-48hp region.
Oh yeah I have seen that, my dad actually knew him when we lived in Alaska, pretty sure it was long before he did tv.Dustin & AK…My wife loves this show…the old man, his son, and daughter take a week to help homesteaders. They are really good people and very creative. Neither of you guys would need them, because it’s where people have basically lost control and cry out for help. But it is really amazing the work they get done in a week to help people get back on their feet.

Let me get a picture of the kubota I have to check I can’t remember the size. The thing is a huge life saver! Have not been around deere at all. Always had IH/kubota for farm tractors
I keep seeing that one pop up but haven't watched it yet. I did recently give Clarkson Farm a try though and that one is cracking me up!Dustin & AK…My wife loves this show…the old man, his son, and daughter take a week to help homesteaders. Just from past experience is always better to have to much gun and not need then to have to little and need it.When I was a kid we grew up on the Kubota and I beat the hell out of it. My brother and I were both known to get it stuck in the back fields a time or two lol. My dad later upgraded to a larger deere and somehow the Kubota ended up on my brothers farm down the road??? I'm guessing its one of those borrow it forever deals haha.
I'd really like to go American made and honestly the Kubotas are actually built in the states. I'm just concerned that I need a small tractor long term, but a big tractor short term to clear the land. I'm going to take an acre of our woods and clear it out, leaving 6 or 8 big trees inside the pasture, but limbed way the hell up. it will be a big project though, probably 100+ fence posts and 8ft deer fencing.
i'm not sure a little bx series or 1025 deere can handle that, even though once its done those tractors would be fine for everything else.

How much land you clearing? I’m assuming you be running like a 3 point mower/ brush hog kinda clearing?
Oh yeah you are talking some big clearing. For sure I would probably go that route. Depending on how thick I would say a day would clear it up.Thats true, my concern with the bigger rigs was more about trail work out in the woods and whatnot where a narrower bucket and skidsteer would make ideal cuts. we're only on about 7 acres but its nearly all woods so I've been using onx and google maps to plot out a clean 1 acre clearing. I'm starting to think the right answer might be to bring in a forestry mulcher for the day and have him do the hard clearing work, then I go in there with the lighter tractor rig to maintain it. My main 3 point attachments I think I'd need would be auger (cause fence post pounder likely won't go high enough for deer fencing) grader for the driveway, possibly trencher/backhoe. I know the little 24hp tractors can get beat up with an auger, but I think the bucket strength would be plenty IF the forestry mulcher has already done most of the clearing....
I don't think I'd really need a brush hog cause I don't think the pasture will ever get big enough to warrant it and the initial land clearing I think would need more than a brush hog of that makes sense. we have those big 100ft+ firs, a giant maple, some madronas. we want to limb those way the hell up to clear sunlight, but the under brush is all about 5-8ft tall salmonberry and that kinda stuff. the things that make deer hunting in western washington miserable.
Yeah for sure I would probably go the tire route and foam filled, even though many drawbacks compared to a track, but almost indestructible. They do make metal track kits for the wheel skiddysYeah I'm hoping a 1 day project would knock it out, in that case it might be cheaper for me to have a local dude come out and do that part for me than investing in a mulcher and bigger rig. I'd definitely prefer a skidsteer but I have a fear of throwing a track out in the woods lol.
Are you doing a Sheiko program? Is that why there’s these jumps back and forth between primary patterns? Or are you alternating between some of these movements but not listing it?Evening session

Feels like I’m not going heavy enoughbut I know this is the way and it’s proven, this should work out nicely ramping up and the week I’ll have to travel will be a de load week.
Im running a cast iron strength mark keys spreadsheet it is a 12 week layout. Are you doing a Sheiko program? Is that why there’s these jumps back and forth between primary patterns? Or are you alternating between some of these movements but not listing it?
If you have an adjustable bench, setting it to an incline then placing your forehead on the top end while you bent row will give some extra low back support. Just an idea.Im running a cast iron strength mark keys spreadsheet it is a 12 week layout.
Only mod is i dont have a good chest supported row option so im just doing bent over rows
I’ll give that a shot I have not tried that before with a barbellIf you have an adjustable bench, setting it to an incline then placing your forehead on the top end while you bent row will give some extra low back support. Just an idea.
