Nice deload day where I had a solid bench groove. I was feeling good after an easier week & wanted to work up more, but I stuck to the plan. Reminded myself that this is the last “break” until prep is done, with 8 weeks of tough road ahead starting this Sunday. I don’t pull too many punches on accessories during deload, but I really try to scale back the big lift and curb the secondary as well. Then just leave out the really hard rep(s) on accessories.

I live in NC and it’s going to be in the low-mid 90’s starting today. Brutal. I can’t imagine working out in a gym that doesn’t at least have a fan. During COVID I worked out at the gym at work that’s located on the bottom parking deck. It was miserably hot in the summer and cold in the winter. We had fans for the summer that was some help but nothing for the cold. Stay hydrated and stay on track. You’ll be on the platform before you know it.

Man that does sound brutal, no fan in the gym. Yeah this heatwave seems to be hitting everywhere. Here in Georgia we are in the low 90s now, but by mid week it’s supposed to hit between 95 - 100 and the humidity is very high. Thankfully our gym has A/C.
Glad you’re taking in plenty of fluids.

Are you still drinking the homemade Intraworkout hydration drink with Countrytime Lemonade?

It’s 10:30 my time and with the heat index it’s 91. Real temp is 86. It’s going to be miserable this week.

No, that’s something MrKleen had been doing, quite possibly at my advice though. I have been doing Karbolyn exclusively for at least the last year. I just digest it exceptionally well, it works very well for me for stable energy, and it’s significantly cheaper than HBCD. But you basically want to use the cheapest fuel source that you digest well & accomplishes the job. So if cheap stuff like sugary bulk lemonade or Gatorade powders work well for someone, they should stick to that (kind of like always using creatine monohydrate over HCL if you tolerate it fine). Where those get into issues is usually for longer sessions and/or doses higher than about 25g carbs.

BUT, on that notion I could probably save some cash adding a little to my summer blend, because it looks like I need more carbs to hydrate with the greater fluid & salt needs. So I might pick some up to bolster things now that you’ve mentioned it.

I really can’t either, not just for working out. This was in the context of training for looming competition, which is a different kind of motivation to realize if I don’t check certain boxes I simply won’t reach my immediate goals. Otherwise, I’d just go to the commercial gym and do something else!

You can keep the rain…..we are getting plenty of rain in the afternoons, but the steam coming off the roads from the heat just makes humidity worse...my tomatoes and peppers love it though.
If I could I would send you some of our heat…. I don’t mind sharing, and we have plenty.😎

we get so little of it I just changed perspective in my adult years and started embracing it like crazy. its basically just July and August here, we will hit triple digits usually 1 day a year in the Seattle area, other than that we run around like a bunch of soaking wet albinos the other 9-10 months of the year. vampire people lol.

They’re a solid formulation, but they are just entirely too expensive. Once you run out, buy yourself a store brand or Morton tub of non-iodized salt and a 1/4 teaspoon and add the same thing for actual pennies. You can also get 99mg potassium capsules anywhere for next to nothing, if you feel the need to down one or two.

I am a big proponent of iodine, but if you’re using large quantities of salt like this you don’t want to consuming excess iodine obviously.

The dextrose and Countrytime lemonade does have sugar. 1:1 dextrose to sugar in the lemonade and pure dextrose in the other. It doesn’t give me any issues at all. I also put at least 500 mgs of salt and a serving of EAA’s in it as well. The LMNT has no sugar. LMNT is pricy but it’s convenient and has good flavors too.

Again, it’s largely a dosage and timing thing. This is similar dosage to half a can of soda, or an apple.

25g carbs total, even if entirely sugar, is easily getting burned up in real training. The big thing is either to not start it too soon, have enough slower-digesting food under it prior, or consume enough total carbohydrate concurrently to sustain elevated blood sugar through the session.

If you are on an empty gut, 25g sugar is going to flash in and out FAST and you will be crash in 30 minutes or so. But in my case I’d have 35g prior in fig bars 10 min before warming up, then 50g Karbolyn (pulverized corn/rice/potato powder) intra along with that 25g sugar, spread over the entire 2-hour session.

It’s the difference between trying to continually sustain a new fire only with twigs, vs adding twigs to a larger established fire.

Caught a little tan this weekend, so with that, today’s pump, and all the sweat from the heatwave I was getting some comments on looking pretty jacked. Generally, my weights for just about everything are going up all over, so things are definitely getting interesting.

That's exactly how I used to do it when I was running 2hr sessions like that. except the fig bar probably was swapped out with something else but otherwise the intra, etc same deal. maintained work capacity for very long periods of time.

I still run this route basically if I'm on a strength cycle, although I might replace the 50g karbolyn with a protein shake containing carbs/sugars intra.

The heat was brutal, but good progress all around. Swissbar work up to 6x6, got the 80s for 25 on low incline, waved weight up/reps back on rolling skulls, and managed pressdowns without cramping at the end despite going through 2 shirts.

There was a couple points with absolutely zero breeze even when I was standing by the back door. I was resting, trying to cool down, but nothing was happening; I just had to say ‘F it’ and plug on.

The big thing is to minimize preparatory work & warmups to the bare minimum, and remember the only way out is through - so keep it moving.

The country time lemonade thing was definitely me, but yes the idea came from @Hyde as well. I found it quite enjoyable and it gave me no gastric issues. Did the trick for what I was trying to accomplish at that point. I have been using True Nutrition's Karboload recently, which is a knockoff of Karbolyn. I picked up 3 bags for pretty cheap on a deal a while back for $45 for 5lbs compared to 50 for 4 lbs of Karbolyn. That was duing prep, where i was trying to nail things down perfectly. Right now it is $20 a bag, so the price is about even. Might be worth looking into for 4rth of July sales if you are interested. Although like @Hyde said, no real reason to switch if the lemonade is working. Unless you have a need for the specificity above and beyond what you have been doing, there might not be anything to fix. I have been doing a lot of little things to make stuff more affordable too. Now sometimes I just drop some carb powder and aminos, or protein into some sugar free coolaid. I take about a gram of Himalayan Sea Salt with my preworkout, then a bit more just before my session to carry through the sweating. I just measure it, drop it on my tongue and wash it down with some water or my peri-workout drink. I would rather do it all at once than drinking a salty beverage throughout my session. I kind of like piece mealing my periworkout nutrition because I can adjust nutrients easily based on what I have had already that day, or haven't had enough of yet.

Did a little recovery/mobility/accessory work at the CrossFit gym while my son did his Saturday class. He learned how to do Mountain Climbers today, and had zero trouble doing Wall Walks thanks to his gymnastics class. He is having a lot of fun with it & keeping up with the older kids well!

Great plan, and that is the way to go for sure, especially if you budgeted for it.

Yeah, I haven't been pushing the sodium as hard lately. I was doing a lot more previously, but to be fair, I have not been sweating as bad as a lot of you all recently either. No direct cardio, and my sessions have not been extremely taxing or long in the heat. Plus the warehouse gym I go to has a massive BIG ASS FAN, that thing has to be 25-30 foot wide, and the gym is well insulated, so it probably doesn't get over 85, in there right now when it is hot. Well, it has been 2 weeks since I lifted there too, so that may be different today. If I were training like I was while working toward the contest I would be drenched but right now what I have to limit myself to avoid aggravating my neck injury is just not enough to push me into that level of extended effort. I do intend to turn up the heat a bit on the volume here pretty soon. So, I need to work out my electrolytes for sure. That way, I am able to run longer and more efficiently with good hydration the whole time.

I don't know how you add that much sodium to your pre. I tried it a long time ago with the pink Himalayan sea salt. Bought a big azz tub from Amazon thinking I'd use it. Many years later, I've barely broken into it even with using it for seasoning food!

I think I tried a 1/4 tsp and it just changed the flavor profile so bad that I gave up, lol.

our heat is nowhere near yours yet, but we are definitely in a drought. nobody will even talk about it, but we've had like 1 day of rain in the last month+. its going to be a crispy summer.

Wow, I know that’s got to be unusual for y’all not to get rain.
every since I was a kid 9 times out of 10, rain until the 4th of July. the reason that sticks with me is cause dad always said we could only have fireworks if it rained before the 4th, and it always did, lol.

I definitely do NOT expect rainy July or August, we are the driest part of the nation during those months I believe, so with the drought starting in april I think its gonna be a crispy season and I'll have a substantial water bill on my lawn lol.
 
Yeah, he is going to be good at most things involving physicality with the current training / play he is getting and he thinks it is a blast which is awesome!

You know what’s crazy, is when I take him to these things it’s not like he’s the only one: there’s always other kids doing the exact same things at the same completely tame entry level in each class. These are just kids dabbling with basic movements: intro to swimming, running, climbing, tumbling, and jumping. It’s stuff they all appear to have fun doing together.

So it’s not that he’s doing anything hardcore, but rather our society is such that a lot of people simply don’t value this stuff. They take their kids to school to begin training their brains, but some totally neglect their bodies. The very things responsible for housing and protecting those young minds!

I don't know how you add that much sodium to your pre. I tried it a long time ago with the pink Himalayan sea salt. Bought a big azz tub from Amazon thinking I'd use it. Many years later, I've barely broken into it even with using it for seasoning food!

I think I tried a 1/4 tsp and it just changed the flavor profile so bad that I gave up, lol.

I usually add 1/4tsp to the pre, and whatever additional amount I use preWO is just dry-scooped & chased. I always chug my preWO, so it doesn’t really matter to me how it tastes, but I actually enjoy some salt in my pre. Zoo got me into that, otherwise I’d just dry-scoop/chase it all. That’s what I recommend most people do; just bypass drinking it entirely.

This is purely for performance enhancement/injury prevention, so it’s more like something that just needs to get done however.

our heat is nowhere near yours yet, but we are definitely in a drought. nobody will even talk about it, but we've had like 1 day of rain in the last month+. its going to be a crispy summer.

We haven’t had rain in a couple weeks, and with it hitting high 80s/low 90s daily I think the grass may go dormant earlier than usual if next week doesn’t deliver. We don’t keep the yards green here; it’s just a wasteful uphill battle - people tend to only water to bridge gaps, but once the rain stops for the summer that’s it for many neighborhoods here.

Humidity yesterday morning after sunrise was absolutely oppressive; there was zero breeze, and all the cars/windshields were cloudy & dripping dew. My wrists were beaded with sweat just driving with my windows down. Found the air inside the club was decidedly drier (and only 78* inside as it had cooled overnight), so I kept it all closed up while I trained. Felt warm enough on arrival, so I just laid right down on the bench & got cracking - this proved to be optimal for the scenario.

I also decided to start benching with the kilo plates. I’ve already been doing so for squat & pull, and realized it will probably make the transition easier starting sooner.

Also, I am Team Dry Scoop! I don't mind some salt in a sweeter drink like a pre-workout, or protein shake which I often add some too, as well as my coffee, but I don't like it in my water. The salt in the coffee while brewing gets rid of so much of the acidic taste. Ps might as well add some sodium to something that can also dehydrate you a little. Help to keep some of it in.

I think a lot of people lie in articles about yard keeping in regards to how often and how much. A major reason why I keep our lawn green in the summer is because the green grass lowers the ambient temp around the house. I know you've seen pics of our view and while its a super big blessing, it gets hammered by the sun until about 2pm so I'd live in the sahara desert if I didn't keep it green. the green healthy grass truly makes a big difference for us.

my water bill dropped substantially when I set up that $39.99 diy watering kit from home depot + a behive timer on the faucet to water the yard for a few minutes every morning before the sun hits it. I keep the grass taller than normall too during the dry period.

its a lot of work and no lie it is still a bump in the water bill but a green grass during a dry period really really makes things more bearable imo

Everything just feels heavy as hell on squats, but I haven’t even squat 500 since I hurt my knee last year, so I guess what did I expect? The bar does move okay; it’s just hell conditioning my body to these weights. Took a couple singles over my work weight to help with exposure somewhat, and overall things are climbing, so it’s going in the right direction at least!

Even though it felt heavy, still some strong squats, especially that 473 x 1.💪

Hey just imagine how much better the weight it’s going to feel like when you’re in the A/C. You’re getting some old school conditioning programmed in. You’re on the right track man. Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll kill it at the meet.
