Hyde’s Strength Odyssey

@Hyde curious since you are now at the body weight you were when you posted your last pump shot, is the knew muscle pretty obvious visually?

I have a hunch most have not!!! My best on one was 5 reps with 6 plates per side.

It’s hard to say for sure just doing singles and the fatigued set of 12 at 4 plates, but if I had to hazard a guess I would expect I’m probably right around that strength currently?

My knees would never take that !

I can appreciate that! I’m sure my 6 days off training coupled with starting Indomethacin & NPP made a big difference. Basically cheat code mode.

You know not a ton - I definitely feel like my legs are better, but most new tissue beyond that is probably in my back and core, not my pressing muscles or arms. My triceps/bench are overall stronger, but I haven’t been able to do curls or any vertical pressing, so that development seems minimal comparably.

I think my anterior pressing muscles were biggest summer of 21, when by back went out right before the June meet and I lifted my butt on a 380 bench I locked out (weighing an actual 245lbs). I was doing the Lilliebridge method, which involved a lot of light raises & flyes as well as incline bench work.

^When you find out low LDL is actually a very bad thing, and red meat was shown to have next to no correlation to cardiac events, all in the same week 🥹

There are probably better ways to break a 28-hour fast, but I can’t think of any!

Saw local surgeon this morning and he impressed on me to NOT start training extension/pressing & curling yet, but to hammer passive stretching until my ROM is complete first. Otherwise I will grow strong in partial range again fast but make it much harder to restore the greatest ROM. Said to definitely see the PT ASAP and see what they have to say to make sure I’m covering my bases, so I have an appointment Friday morning. He cleared me to use my hand to hold whatever, deadlifting, squats, rows.

Made palpable progress on flexion & extension tonight. Tomorrow is lower body for real, but I just did a quick Bulgarian style hi bar work up til the squat slowed down for fun, then pumped up my delts & pecs.

That makes sense, not to train extension, pressing, and curling which would strengthen partial range, but would make ROM harder to restore. And I know it’s hard, especially when you’re feeling good. Hopefully your PT will have good news Friday and you’re closer than they think.

It was a great message overall: the fastest way back to what I want to do is going to be by stretching on my own like crazy.

I already had full mechanical ROM leaving surgery, so the greater frequency & volume I apply now on my own the better.

Basically, it’s just time to pound sand!

Really put a lot of frequency and effort into my PT throughout the day - obvious progress. Felt like pulling heavy tonight, so I did. 535x3 means I was probably good for ~595x1 today, which is a great place to be for me while down 30lbs & only cruising. Used straps so I could go DOH & get the extra traction on my elbow.

Bit of a weight spike from eating about 4,000 calories in my window yesterday (a good amount being simple carbs around training). 17 hour fast today, 8 hour feeding window, ~3,000 calories.

Things are progressing nicely !!

Good to hear your op went smooth mate!

One thing I’ve noticed is, subtle changes to a joint require subtle changes to motor recruitment pattern, and that can actually be tricky. Be mindful!

Some very good advice I hadn’t considered. That when I go to press, I should probably treat it like I’m starting all over again. Let my body feel out the positioning.

Interesting - I never thought of that ??

I can vouch for the validity of this statement with six joint surgeries under my belt. I went about a decade after multiple knee surgeries in a short time until I needed shoulder surgery. Forgetting that everyone’s surgery is at least slightly different, recovery is different (both in time and what you’re capable of after), and how it generally feels after, I looked at the averages of each and went nanners as soon as I thought I could. Completely forgot that things don’t quite work the same after getting cut and muscle recruitment can be significantly changed. Won’t whine about how trashed the shoulder is now, but I wish I took the time to regain full control of muscles before overloading the joint again.

I’ll probably go with a Bill Starr rehab type super high frequency protocol, just start with the barbell & go into the garage every day to steadily increment the loading.

^4-450 calories of olive oil, avocado, leafy greens, pickle, celery, salt, vinegar for today.

Have to take my indomethacin with food daily, so fasting-mimicking diet today & tomorrow to keep insulin down and make a real caloric deficit.

That salad looks delicious !

That salad looks delicious !

It was extremely good. My father always made dressing homemade with 50/50 olive oil & vinegar and just toss some spices onto the salad. I always enjoyed it!

I’m not sure why I have been eating all these processed vegetable seed oils with added sugar & sweeteners for years. They taste good, but they’re all terrible for your arteries. Any premade dressing at the store is based on soybean or canola oil or similarly inflammatory vegetable seed oil - I looked high & low, expensive organics to your store brand ranch, and every shelf is the same: full of vegetable oils.

There are no ranches, thousand island, french made from something like avocado or olive oil. It’s pretty disappointing. I’ll have to look online.

When we were running Paleo hardcore, back when that was the fad of the year, pretty much everything was avocado oil but made at home. Avocado ranch was pretty good.

We are still probably 80% Paleo out of habit but I drop those rules for carbs personally.

I enjoy avocado oil a lot & keep it stocked for the last couple years at least so I’ll search some recipes up - good tip, thanks!

Primal kitchen has a bunch of dressings made with avocado oil. A bit pricey but delicious.

Check out Newman's Own, Paul Newman's line I think they are all made with pure olive oil. Gazebo Room is Soy & Olive Oil (It is my favorite)

Yeah the soy oil is basically the problem. I will check out Newman’s Own.
Is there a specific oil you want. There's brands that are made only with olive oil, there's other ones made with avocado oil, I've even seen ones made from blood orange and chili oils that Im pretty sure have a MCT base

Avocado or olive (MCT would probably be unnecessary given cost).

I enjoy the olive & vinegar I made a lot, but it would also be great to have a ranch or thousand island, or something creamy.

Another fasting-mimicking day.

~110 calories total of ghee & coconut oil in my late afternoon coffee, and the same salad with avocado as yesterday at 6pm.

So a pair of 20-21 hour fasts and only 1,200 calories total over 2 days.

I’ll have a ~16 hour fast until tomorrow before an 8 hour feeding window with a typical 3-4k calories likely. Going to the in-laws for chili, and legs Monday morning early.

I haven’t tried this particular one, but they aren’t that difficult to make your own. I favor homemade blue cheese and vinaigrette, but this ranch looks good - maybe even with a yogurt alternative.

An elbow workout just sounds strange, (but necessary) I'm glad you are making a fast comeback and can't wait to see the results !!

I find it interesting that tofu is sold as this "healthier" alternative while soy oil is killing people.

Glad your elbow is doing well! the IF approach worked well for me before our Chili feed on Saturday too. It all went to hell the next day when my wife made steak and potatoes for just she and I, lol. I don't know why we live in the PNW. I'm happier on a farm and she cooks like it.

Just imagine smashing your arm into every position you can find that it doesn’t want to go into - lean into that and hold it for a couple minutes, & that’s basically the physical therapy I’m doing. The thing that slows it down the most is just mentally recovering between sets. You know it’s going to hurt, and you know it will hurt worse unbending your arm when the hold is done.

This is so true, coming out of the stretch is a mofo!!!! When I am working ROM on my shoulder coming out of the stretches is easily my least favorite part.

Momma got a brand new bag! "Well Son, if you want to have another great workout tomorrow don't forget to bring my baby over for dinner Sunday!"

We have been going over there a lot, probably every other week or third week in recent months, which I think everyone really enjoys a lot & is great for the family. My son really loves going over, running around with the dog and seeing his grandparents & aunt, and we all like watching him play and being together to share a big dinner.

Grandpa has been building fires now that it’s cold, he has football on, Grandma is always orchestrating some kind of good meal. Last week was London broil, potatoes, a veggie-beef stew, rolls, corn on the cob, caramel apple pie (my favorite these days). Yesterday we had homemade chili & Dutch apple pie, cheese & crackers.

I always end up kicked back in the recliner with a full belly sipping a couple cups of coffee across from the fire while my son plays before I drive us back - a zen moment for sure.

I am really fortunate to have the in-laws I do. I truly enjoy spending time with them & am always excited to see them - having such love for them makes our marriage much better, I believe.

Absolutely, a positive relationship with the in-laws has to make the relationship stronger overall. I know not having one definitely adds a scratch and dent quality to the relationship. It can be overcome but having a good strong base for the family is huge! I miss having family around like that. Unfortunately most of my family lives in Florida, and I live in Texas so if anything I am the anchor here in Texas for my Step mother and adopted brother and sister. I try to take on the mantle since Dad is gone, but it isn't easy.

What's scripture say... "for this reason a man shall leave his mother and father... and the two will be joined in one flesh..." along those lines? It seems natural for men to migrate and move on but our wives tend to hold the apron strings much tighter. When you can have a good relationship with the in-laws it's a blessing. Seems like it's more natural for a man to end up marrying his wife's family than the reverse (if that makes sense). of course you want peace and love to go both ways, but most men I've noticed are born to cut the apron strings more easily than their wives.
