Of course we wouldn’t be better off with no police. But if the system allows bad apples to thrive, and not only turns a blind eye to them but actively protects them, it’s a major problem. Some fair points. While I have never been the biggest fan of police in general and agree that some issues should/will be addressed, I can’t help but feel that we are allowing them to be degraded too harshly. We would be much worse off without them. It doesn’t even make sense how these “peaceful“ protests can still be carried on in such a way. It’s over the top, intrusive, disruptive, dangerous, and obnoxious.
Last weekend, we couldn’t even transport patients with life threatening conditions to appropriate medical facilities because they were blocking hospital access due to their sheer numbers in the roads. We had to life flight patients which took significantly longer (literally an entire day) and exponentially more expensive. No to mention an unnecessary use of valuable resources.
Today, a small town in Maine was scheduled to have a “peaceful“ protest of 1,000 people. Yesterday, people found brick and stone piles were intermittently placed throughout the community, which also happens to have a local hospital. Police removed the rock/bricks from the neighborhoods and businesses boarded up their windows. Severe thunderstorms put a damper on things, but people were afraid of what could potentially happen to their homes, pets, and other people’s lives. The national guard was called in. Luckily, the severe weather hit and seemed to deter the group.
This could happen anywhere, in any small town. Nobody is really safe anywhere in this current situation..
That said, that is NOT a justification for looting and interfering with medical transport. It just creates more innocent victims, and gives the bad apple officers justification to use even more force, and say how they were right all along.
