It's that time of the year... Let's get SCARY STRONG! + Free Suppzzzzz

An overlooked tip IMO, keep your head neutral and chest up throughout the lift.

My coach is always yelling at me. Head up chest out!

Head placement with deadlifts:

Your body will always follow your head. If you’re looking down, then the bar is going to want to travel forward. At the same time, you don’t want to look at the ceiling. Focus on an area that keeps your head in a straight, up and back position with the eyes focusing on an upper area of the wall.

An overlooked tip IMO, keep your head neutral and chest up throughout the lift.

Got ya back a few pages :)

This is awesome. Lots of solid advice. I always get stoked listening to people excited about training. If anyone has any specific questions hit me up. Ill be checking back all day.

the chest up signal can be tricky as some people will attempt to only push chest up which in some disengages the "connection/stability" to the lats and core.

I putt chest up right up there with shoulder blades together as favorite terms to say but we really don't know what it means but it written about a lot...

I went in last night and went barefoot and it did make a HUGE difference. Got some weird looks as im in a mainly old people and weightloss/zumba type gym but oh well.

If people keep their lats and hamstrings right before they pull most chances their back won't be rounded and head will be neutral

Most forget to pull the slack out of the bar before their actual pull

It is definitely noticeable. It's also different in chucks. I almost feel like I'm doing a slight deficit deadlift compared to barefoot or with vibrams.

There are just so many variables that make each lift great. That's what I love about lifting. There is always something new to learn!

Absolutely! That is huge.

I tend to only attempt break the floor only after I feel the bar bending a bit. It's become kind of an odd habit, but I bend down into position and pull the slack out three times before I lift. Third time is when I actually start the lift.

Another tip that I found out the hard way is to make sure you fill your belly with air and hold it there. Don't "hold it in your face" if that makes sense. I once blew some blood vessels around my eyes doing that, LOL. Also, letting the air out as you ascend can help out here as well.

Same applies to squatting

Protein and How Much
Great article:

The insulin time course in the experiment we performed lasted 3 hours, the same as protein synthesis. Additionally, Wolfe et al. also showed that the timecourse of insulin seemed to track protein synthesis during an essential amino acid infusion5. Perhaps maintaining elevated plasma insulin levels is required to prolong protein synthesis in response to a meal. In either case, it appears that supplementing with an amino acid supplement containing ~2-3g of leucine along with some carbohydrates (~20-30g) is an effective way to maximize muscle protein synthesis.

If you’re standing too close to the bar, it’ll have to come over the knee before you can pull back—thus, going forward before it goes backward. If your shoulders are in front of the bar at the start of the pull, then the bar will want to go forward, not backward. If your back isn’t arched, the bar will also want to drift forward. For some lifters, not being able to pull back can be a muscular thing.

John Meadows interview with Layne norton on protein intake:

"As for being dangerous, there is no evidence that protein intake all the way up to around 1.3g protein/lb of bodyweight is dangerous to healthy organs. As far as I know, no distinguishable side effects or upper limit of tolerable intake of protein has ever been demonstrated. Now that said, intakes of above 1.5g/lb have never really been studied to my knowledge so I would not go so far as to say there is no danger to over consuming protein. Now if you are talking about how much is ‘too much’ in terms of going over what you need to maximize anabolism, then typically with most protein sources 30-40g at a meal will absolutely maximize the anabolic response. Now if you are talking about low quality protein sources like wheat and soy, this value may be a bit higher or if you are talking about an elderly person, or someone who is much higher lean body mass than most people (ie 250 lbs and lean) then it might increase optimal protein intake recommendations per meal a bit."

Ok lets keep the idea rolling! Does anyone utilize smelling salts with their Deadlifts?

I was blindsided by them once and have never gone back

Nothing is worse than a gym that does not allow chalk
sometimes you got to bust out the liquid chalk to get it done

Protein:
It is not all about chicken, steak, fish, and eggs for protein. Get creative with protein powder to find ways to curb your sweet tooth when cutting. Shakes are great and convenient, but baking and cooking with protein has a lot of benefits:

Deadlift Tip:

if you let your shoulders relax and even round forward a little, you’ll see your fingertips are much lower. This is why we teach a rounding of the upper back. First, the bar has to travel a shorter distance. Second, there’s less stress on the shoulder region. It’ll also help keep your shoulder blades behind the bar.

That's good advice from Dave Tate. In fact, it's word for word from this page: Invalid Link Removed

So is this.

Worth watching. Pretty cool how he can deadlift so much but look relatively scrawny.

Update Bob. I have now watched. So you think you can deadlift, squat, and bench series. Such valuable information. Any other hidden jewels?

Hey my friend. When were you planning on logging the Liquid Labs product you won? I have sent you PM's and see you posting on the board but no response.

This one about locking down the lats is pretty solid too. Still don't really know anyone else personally who does his pressure breaths though...

This damn thread is awesome. Exactly what we wanted, and we got it.

So.... The last weeks winners will be up soon.

I have a little ninja monkey running around my compound here... He's saying something about AM.com Beta Testing on a new USPlabs product...

He may be crazy, though.

Is he ticklish? Because if you hold him down, I'll collect the tears for a USP anabolic super stack!

I mean, we could make him cry, but I'm guessing A.) he wouldn't and B.) I don't want to do that to the little fella....
