Effects of a purported aromatase and 5α-reductase inhibitor on hormone profiles in college-age men.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an alleged aromatase and 5-α reductase inhibitor (AI) on strength, body composition, and hormonal profiles in resistance-trained men. Thirty resistance-trained men were randomly assigned in a double-blind manner to ingest 500 mg of either a placebo (PL) or AI once per day for 8 wk. Participants participated in a 4-d/wk resistance-training program for 8 wk. At Weeks 0, 4, and 8, body composition, 1-repetition-maximum (1RM) bench press and leg press, muscle endurance, anaerobic power, and hormonal profiles were assessed. Statistical analyses used a 2-way ANOVA with repeated measures for all criterion variables (p ≤ .05). Significant Group × Time interaction effects occurred over the 8-wk period for percent body fat (AI: -1.77% ± 1.52%, PL: -0.55% ± 1.72%; p = .048), total testosterone (AI: 0.97 ± 2.67 ng/ml, PL: -2.10 ± 3.75 ng/ml; p = .018), and bioavailable testosterone (AI: 1.32 ± 3.45 ng/ml, PL: -1.69 ± 3.94 ng/ml; p = .049). Significant main effects for time (p ≤ .05) were noted for bench- and leg-press 1RM, lean body mass, and estradiol. No significant changes were detected among groups for Wingate peak or mean power, total body weight, dihydrotestosterone, hemodynamic variables, or clinical safety data (p > .05). The authors concluded that 500 mg of dailyAI supplementation significantly affected percent body fat, total testosterone, and bioavailable testosterone compared with a placebo in a double-blind fashion.

Background

Researchers wanted to examine the effects of fenugreek as an 5-a reductase inhibitor. Strength, body composition, and hormonal profiles were measured

Study Design
Randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study.

30 resistance-trained men were assigned to either a placebo control group or a fenugreek group. The experimental group took a capsule containing 500mg of fenugreek once per day in the morning on nontraining days and before their workout on training. Duration of the study was 8 weeks. At Weeks 0, 4, and 8 body composition, upper and lower body 1 RM strength, upper and lower body muscle endurance (80% 1RM), anaerobic sprint power, and fasting clinical blood profiles (substrates, electrolytes, muscle and liver enzymes, red cells, white cells) and anabolic hormones (total testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, estradiol) were all measured. They followed a periodized 4-day/week
resistance-training program, split into two upper and two lower extremity workouts per week.

Notable Results

Testosterone and bioavailable testosterone both increased in the fenugreek group. There was no significant changes in estrogen. The fenugreek group also experienced a decrease in body fat.

Take away

Supplementation with 500mg fenugreek significantly increased total and bioavailable testosterone levels, as well as decreased percent body fat, in conjunction with a resistance-training program.

Is there a link to the journal posting on ncbi so i could see the other relevant info?

If you google the study title you can also find the FT as a pdf from research gate

Interesting how it was labeled an AI yet no estrogen decrease, bug a significant testosterone increase. Time to read.

Wish I could say that analyzed fenu did this for me... In fact body comp has gone to hell since starting 3 weeks ago- all in belly and chest. I seem to not respond well to it. I dropped it today and will hope for positive changes. I was doing 3 caps a day, so 1200mg

Nothing against AS. I love all the other products, fenu itself must just not be for me

If your body composition has "gone to hell" it isn't the fenugreek causing it.

But literally nothing else has changed except adding fenu to my existing stack (anabeta, xgels, elim1nate).... I eat the same foods, I sleep the same amount, I've been training consistently. Something has just caused me to puff up.. Belly and chest only.

I supplement fenugreek in because i know theres studies behind it and its cheap.

So, This is going to sound kinds absurd but every single damn time I take a full week off from the gym, I get leaner and fuller and harder. After one full week of returning to regular training, I am noticeably softer, puffy/swollen looking, and seem to just look beat up.

I understand this is actually quite possible and most likely due to extremely poor recovery- however- i supplement my diet and training pretty heavily. There IS history of low T.

I love training with high volume (not the pre workout lol) and I love doing some form of cardio at most - but not all sessions (3-4x a week) (bike HIIT/ prowler/ stairs/ incline walking/ sprints/ strongman carries)

The issue is largely in the midsection and lower belly... I get noticeably leaner and tighter and flatter when I don't do cardio or direct ab work! But I love doing cardio for the health benefits and overall wellness. I also know core work is important- not taking about 100 crunches here, but actual core work for posture and stability.

I'm at a loss. I love training hard. I love pushing myself, but it's actually hurting my physique. I want health benefits but i also want to look good. What should i do here? I am about to return to training this week so I'm wondering how to approach it given the fact I look pretty damn good after doing NOTHING for 6 days straight and pretty much not changing my diet(maybe 200-300 calories less a day) although I don't and don't want to count macros.

Because it seems you think it is your training style here and water intake in another post. Not to mention you don't count calorie intake making it kinda hard to pinpoint the cause of physique changes when you have caloric intake as an unknown variable.

Not to mention you are also taking 7 supplements

Starting tomorrow;

T alatus
Fenu 400
Elim1nate
Anabeta
Norco as EC stack
Old c20
X gels

Which confounds it even further making it harder to say X caused Y.

Cheap you say, cheap enough to toss into pct? Or do I need to sell Josh my left kidney.
Currently only $13.99 during the Analyzed end of the year closeout sale. - > Invalid Link Removed

Getting a gallon a day, and I stopped using the t alatus a week ago. Ive used everything else on that list countless times In the past w great results.

I've always felt that with fenugreek extracts just saying
and this

So I'm not the only one. Not trying to argue. Just gets kinda old when I come on here and post a result and it's immediately written off as impossible- not entirely directed at you josh

im going to drop so very likely bro science. havent read up on fenu for quite a while. for some reason i swear i read that fenugreek is best tapered up when dosing it. for example with the AA products, youd do 1 pill for 12 days, 2 pills for 12 days, 3 pills for 12...or something along those lines. any merit to that?

Inhibition of 5a reductase can be a double edge sword

Hence people and problems with finisteride

Context my friend. Fenugreek, as an herb, is estrogenic. It keeps T roughly constant and raises E. What Josh is citing and what AS uses is an extract standardized for saponins, which raise T.

Remember, plants are just a bunch of compounds. It's what you extract for that determines whether they work or not.

Hmm damn everything makes you puff up..
First PA , then Fenugreek :D

I bet its not fenugreek

Phosphatidic acid did the same thing?

"I've woken up with my belly so watery/fatter like beyond anything I've noticed in years. Is there any way this could be connected? I've decided not to dose the PA pre workout bc I train fasted and don't want 16g of fat sitting in my belly while I workout"

:)

:)

Says the guy who triple doses everything.

I Stopped taking the fenugreek. Continued the PA. Belly is quickly returning to normal. Look into 5 alpha reductive and dht RE fenugreek and you will see that it is more than possible. Or we could just keep beating a dead horse with bro science
