whey + leucine = MOAR GAINZ!

So I did a little digging and came across a short review out of the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 2013

to sum it up...

-three studies acknowledge that adding carbohydrates to a protein mix rich in Leucine does not improve MPS
- with that being said, there are still uses of adding carbs pwo, mainly to maximize glycogen restoration

There's a study layne talks about saying that there's a slight increase, but non significant something like 3-5% increase

However may not be statistically significant but it's still higher then protein alone and 5% over a period of time may be significant in the long run

Not for or against either option.

Just saying

These studies have already been conducted. Adding any amount of leucine to ~20g whey isn't going to stimulate MPS any further.

I know you're selling a whey/casein blend, so -although very unlikely- theoretically adding some extra leucine may be of some benefit. In my opinion, it's mostly a gimmick though.

While I appreciate that you have an opinion, citing the studies that you are referring to would be much more beneficial.

makes more sense to just use leucine supplements during lower protein meals or lower quality meals than worrying about adding it to a quality whey shake that already has between 20-30 grams of protein

The problem is he can't say there is a 5% increase because the supposed increase is not statistically significant. There is no way he can know wether it's a genuine difference or one caused by chance.

If you take into account his competing interests and his historical opinions, it's very easy to see why he says these things the way he does.

I think he was talking non biased I believe. He wasn't talking about any product

Sure, here's one from Luc van Loon's group: Invalid Link Removed

And here's another one from Tipton et al.: Invalid Link Removed

Do you have access to the Tipton article? From what I see in the abstract, they had two groups:one got flavored water and the other got protein plus leucine with no protein-only control group and they used the results from some other study to make a leap to their final conclusion. The Koopman article is closer to what I would like to see a group do, but this was in elderly men and their threshold could be much lower than the average member here and signalling can diminish with age as well.

I think I'm good. With AminoIV at 2 scoops intra workout and then Select Protein post workout :).

I understand why using eaa intra workout spikes MPS and actually can aid in muscle building. But why wouldn't it do the same pre workout? I just cannot stomach anything but water intra workout. I try and try and it just makes me sluggish and lethargic... So I've been using 2 scoops amino iv pre workout.. Then getting another scoop 2-3 hours following the pre workout dose. Is this less than ideal?

I know, I was keeding. I never TRULY realized how many cals it's takes to grow. And how hard it is to get them all in a 6 hour feed window lol

Exactly why, IMO, IF sucks.

Growth will only occur in an excess. I think people place to much importance on maximising MPS without ensuring their overall diet is in an excess; i.e. Majoring in the minors

I'm with you on all of that.

Agree 100%. It's really more important on a deficit to have these things lined up properly to ensure u preserve muscle while cutting.

Yeah sure. I also like to make sure my clients lift heavy and focus on peri workout nutrition

I'm with you on all of that.

I tried IF but hated feeling flat all day.
Plus its hard to eat enough in a short space of time.

And pre workout meals are a must for me.

Agreed! I fall into this category at times....not going to lie....

I did too but now i've literally grown a lot since i stopped sweating the small stuff.

Funny how it holds you back more than it does good sometimes

Good thing SNS offers bulk Leucine at a great price; )
