Volcom's Anabeta, Adamantium, Division I, Titanium XL, Erase Log

It really does feel good to squat, but I fall in and out of that discipline. I really need to stay with it and see how far I can take it. I've just never fallen in love with legs development like my other muscle groups. Even now, my motivation for lower extremity development is to boost my abilities in the dead lift.

By round 2 of the Frankie Edgar/BJ Penn fight II, I walked out of the place I was watching it at. I knew for certain Frankie had BJ's number again and I couldn't sit through it, but that had more to do with my lack of respect for Frankie Edgar "at the time," (love the guy now), then it had to do with my Penn fanaticism, because I sat through the GSP/Penn II raping, but that trauamtized me for like 6 months, lol.

aha I hear you on the GSP/PENN 2 raping, I was also traumatized, I normally watch fights a couple times, no way I'll ever watch that fight again, it was just too sad, GSP really gassed BJ out, making him use his shoulders defending the takedowns against the cage :(

I went in that fight favoring GSP, because I knew GSP wasn't the same GSP he was when they first fought, but I expected a war, not a "raping of Nanking" situation. That fight definitely sucked to watch. Edgar/Penn 1&2 were the most disappointing though, because I was favoring Penn heavily in those fights.

UFC Fighters Make Cain vs JDS Predictions

This would be demoralizing to watch if you're JDS.

Daniel Cormier, on the rise.

Josh Barnett, kick'n ass.

Daniel Cormier has an Olympic level wrestling background and some fire in his hands vs Josh Barnett, veteran catch wrestling/BJJ MMA'ist. The two meet next, who wins? Intellectually, I say Josh Barnett, myseterious gut-feeling, I'm feeling Daniel Cormier.

Sweet thanks for posting that up, I didn't get to see this yet.

Daniel Cormier shocked the hell out of me the way he beat Silva, I'm a big Fedor fan and it kinda hurts to see someone so new to MMA pull off something like that, what Fedor couldn't do, but I was happy to see him win. I think Josh will take it, but will be interesting.

I believe I read Fedor is fighting the Snowman, which is just sad he is at that point, all I can do is hope he comes back one day :(

I say Barnett wins the GP. I thought he should have been the #2 favorite to win it behind Fedor.

Speaking of Fedor, some may remember that he was scheduled to fight Monson at the BoDog event when he fought Lindland.

I'd have to think MOST people were shocked. I thought Bigfoot had evolved into a beast, based on how he handled the last emporer, so for him to get the pimp hand like that. It was pretty exciting though. As much as we're aware of the mantra that "anything can happen in MMA," I still get shocked when things like this happen.

Fedor showed some great hips in that fight, when Lindland and Fedor were falling to the ground off the ropes, Fedor was falling backwards and he turned Lindlad while they were fallingto land on top. That was fan-fricken-tastic.

After the HW tournament, what happens to the SF HW division? Business as usual? Or the great merger of 2012?

Merger would be my guess. The HWGP is supposed to conclude early next year (Cormier fractured his hand in the Bigfoot fight) and I wouldn't be surprised to see the winner be a fight away from a title shot.

That would be my guess. If Cormier somehow beats Barnett, then Cormier comes over as an undefeated HW and could be one fight away from his teammate Cain Valasquez, right? Also, isn't Hendo asking for an immediate fight if/when he gets transferred to the UFC?

Assuming that Cain is still champ by then; the record for HW title defenses is 2 in the UFC.

Hendo is in a great bargaining position (again), but I'm not sure if he'd get an immediate title shot. The fight I want to see: Machida v Hendo.

¿Por qué? You think Hendo's stand up style matches up well with Machida? Or it's just two names you want to see collide? You think Hendo is quick enough on the feet to catch Machida? or do you tihnk Hendo could actually bring him down? Machida seems like a difficult fight for Hendo, imo.

Who do you have, Cain or JDS?

It's an intriguing matchup to me because, unlike Couture, Hendo has KO power and a freaking titanium chin. It's worthy of a 5-round fight, IMO.

I'm going with JDS.

Very late sub. However, had I known of this thread, I would have been amongst the very first to have subbed thereto.

JDS!!! Wow. I'd love to hear your interpretation and speculation on that when you have the time. You're only the second person I've heard of side with JDS and the other guy I know who sides with JDS, sides with him because he's been a JDS-guy forever.

Hendo does have a titanium chin, I don't see a crane kick knocking him out. Hendo againt any UFC elite sounds fun to me. He looked good against Fedor for sure. How was that fight for you? I know you're a fan of both.

First and foremost is the variety of competition that JDS has faced particularly Carwin, Nelson, and Gonzaga. They each presented a different nuance and he handled all of them accordingly. He KO'd Werdum as well, but I attribute that to him being an unknown at the time and underestimating him. Conversely, Cain's best wins are Brock and Nog and they both present the same challenge, which requires them to get the fight to the ground. Second, the team that JDS trains with is much, much better in the heavier divisions with the Nog's, Andy, Maldanoldo, Machida, Goncalves, and Teixera (potentially). JDS has fantastic boxing and, based on the Kongo fight, Cain is susceptible to straight punches. I know he has improved since then, but he only survived that fight bc Kongo has zero TDD. Finally, the layoff is a concern. A year away from fighting is a long time and he had major shoulder surgery in his right (power) arm.

I'm actually rooting for JDS, so this is a fresh outlook at the situation.

In and good stuff, I haven't followed as much as I would like on the MMA but after reading the past 9 pages I feel "In the loop". Some great workouts to. I am not a fan of the guilloutine press, danger not only because of the brecarious position of the bar but also the bad spot it puts your shoulders in. Do flyes to isolate that part of the chest if anything. Just my opinion.

Lol, you're basically in-the-know if you've read all 9 pages! I agree on the Guillotine Press, on every note you mentioned. They won't stay in the routine very long. They're just very temporary change of pace. Glad to have you here Kleen.

Oly Core Day

Today was a bit spontaneous. It was going to be an off-day, but there are seasons where you love lifting more then others and this is one of those seasons where I can find any reason to get in the gym (sometimes to my detriment), but today was a great unexpected core day. Since I had no muscle groups to train today, "bodybuilding-wise," I thought I'd just hit Oly lifts to work on form and it turned into so much more. I have some exercises I do and have done in the past that I do not know what to call, perhaps Rodja can help since one of them I know is popular in the BJJ world. Apologies to TG and Kleen, I know you guys aren't really into the Oly stuff, but I'm still bodybuilding here 90% of the time

Box, Hang Snatch
95lbs x 5 reps
105lbs x 5 reps
120lbs x 5 reps
135lbs x 1 rep
135lbs x 1 rep
135lbs x 3 reps
135lbs x 3 reps

*It took a couple sets for my core and shoulders to achieve optimal stabilization for the 135lbs it seems, but I was satisfied with my performance*

Hang Snatch into Full Overhead Squat.

*This was the first time I gave the snatch a full hams to calves depth catch, because I'm using L.A. Fitness weights and not Oly weights, so I took a long time to build up the weight to get my core and shoulders at that angle used to the movement. The form takes time to get used to, catching in a full overhead squat is a different beast*

45lbs x 10 reps
45lbs x 5 reps
45lbs x 5 reps
45lbs x 5 reps
55lbs x 5 reps
65lbs x 5 reps
75lbs x 5 reps
85lbs x 5 reps
95lbs x 3 reps
95lbs x 3 reps
95lbs x 3 reps

Squatted, Power Press?
*I don't know what to call these, maybe someone can help give them a name. I start the movement in a full hams to calves back squat and the bar resting across my shoulders, then I jerk ferociously upward with minimal actual movement and send the bar into an overhead (snatch) position, let the bar back down to my upper back and repeat. All done never leaving the hams to calves position and I finish the final rep with an overhead squat. They're like power/core reps, I don't know*

45lbs x 5 reps
45lbs x 5 reps
45lbs x 5 reps
65lbs x 2 reps
65lbs x 2 reps

Abs: Don't know what these are called either. You plank with your legs on a ball and you curl your knees to your chest and back out, my fighter friend Zack, showed me these. x 3 sets

My abs are still sore and not so much from the ball curls abs, more then anything, the Squatted, Power Press did the most to jack my core.

I think those are called squat presses. I read it in some olympic lift training manual. I know how you feel though. Some rest days I just go into my weight room and do some oly lift training....Though I don't even know if i'm doing um right. I think my clean is the most screwed up though lol. I stopped doing it all together... cant get the elbows up... shoulders and wrists are too stiff....

Squat presses does describe the movement. Though I tend to reserve the word press, without the word power in it if I were pressing it with just muscle, because I'm certainly relying on velocity in this lift, but I could be being snooty with the wording.

The cleans are actually harder then the snatch for me. I don't have the shoulder/wrist flexibility to do a good clean, where I place the bar exactly where it needs to be on my delts. I can still do cleans, but I'd get laughed out the Olympic Training Center if they saw where I placed the bar on my cleans.

hahah yea, when I do my lifts I always wonder if there is some strength coach or some expert crying inside somewhere....

This is an old video of me doing the Oly Snatch with questionable form. My upward explosion is legit, but I didn't and still don't have the proper core strength to catch the Snatch at hams to calves, which is what a legit snatch should be, but I'm working on that now. Apologies to the others that this is a re-run for.

It's a real ego check to learn and develop a true snatch, catching at hams to calves. I used the 2.5's today when I was trying them... there's so much going on technique & coordiation-wise, then I'm in a condition where I CANNOT drop the weight. No fails allowed makes it truly baby steps for me on these.

Yea dude I train in my house.... if I drop anything... there goes my whole floor... haha

Thanks for the vid!!! Time to get explosive!

Looking spot-on, brother Sam!!
All that Olympic lifting has blown your traps up to an incredible degree of growth and size.

Imagine if I did some Oly lifting........I'd look downright freaky. I only do an occasional set or 2 of shrugs. lol
Im my avi pose, I'm not leaning over like you see lots of guys do to show more trap size. I'm standing upright.
If I lean over they look stoopid big!!

You and DW both have huge traps even when you guys are upright. If you were as traps focused as I was, you could probably go to Halloween parties as Cerberus and just paint faces on your traps.

I'd enjoy having the ability to train at home. I bougt some equipment in the past, but there's no room where I live. I've always wanted to convert half a garage space into a squats/deads space.

Man if I had a true weight room I'd be in heaven lol.

Dang looks like shoulder and traps are coming along nicely.

And mattrag. Do you ever sleep? Lol seems like your always on here. Ha ha ha

I have a wonderful iPhone app that allows me to check this site which my OCD loves.

I should be sleeping now. It's 130am. But I got up cause I have mean pain in my whole body from judo. Decided to take some bcaas and try to relax. Then this site's app went off...

Ever since I've been on this stack, I've went from a 24hrs DOMS guy, which I've been my entire life, to a 48hrs later DOMS guy. My hams were 100% yesterday, from the legs day two days ago, but today, my hams are in extreme DOMage. Traps aren't sore today either.

I forget you're in a different time zone. There's a 16 hour difference from SoCal and Taiwan, so getting re-adjusted to the new sleep schedule was a PAIN!

Thanks Chevy, I'm getting there. I've always loved big traps and power looking forearms. Back is also my favorite muscle group to work. When I was in highschool, I was all about chest and bi's, now, I'm all about my back.

Same here. I'll tell ya what I think...........back, traps and forearms are functional muscles and to see them highly developed on an individual just screams true strength and power.

I just love the size a large back gives you. It's a beastly look if you're wide and have a pronounced upper back.
