white and african american

I never understood why in employment stuff they say "white" and "african-american".

why isn't it white and black?

Or european-american and african-american?

the only time people say african-american is when they are trying to be PC. I think it just frustrates equality.

when a white guy does something stupid and i tell a story about it, i say "this white guy was an *******"
when a black guy does something stupid and i tell a story about it, i say "this black guy was an *******"

who even likes the term african american? if you are black and you think it's positive because it affirms your african roots, NEWS FLASH, go back to africa if you dont like the USA!!! and if you're white you're just trying to be nice.

im american, im NOT african-american. no hyphens, i've bled red, white, and blue.

your thoughts?

Who cares? Can't we all just get along?

My best friend hates to be called African American. He was born here, served in the Marines and says he is in no way African, but American. He would rather be called Brown instead of Black though and calls me the "N" word all the time.

The whole Irish/Scottish/African, etc. American thing is extremely amusing to us Europeans. As far as we are concerned:

- 1 parent was born in Ireland/Scotland/Africa then you are 1/2 Irish/Scottish/African
- 1 grandparent was born Ireland/Scotland/Africa then you are 1/4 Irish/Scottish/African (although this would be considered grasping at straws.)

Basically if one of your parents wasn't born outside of the US then you are American. Most Americans seem to be very patriotic so why wouldn't people want to be American and have to try to be Irish/Scottish/African?

I'm Irish-American... I put other as my race lol.

My great-great grandfather was staright up Indian is what i hear, and my closest ancestors, so i'm part indian......WHATSUP.

In reality, the entire idea of something-american is just another wedge used by the government to try and keep us separate, and blaming each other. If you were born here like Omni's friend said, you are American. If you weren't then the something-american makes sense. I'm all mixed eastern european on my mothers side, italian + sicilian on my fathers. My wife is from Puerto Rico, and her family's past a few generations back is from Italy and Spain. Trying to pick a box for my kids on those forms is comical.

awesome pics colo

I'm not a US citizen nor have I ever been to the US, but here in the UK we are pretty diverse and I'm of a pretty mixed background myself (Greek and Armenian from my father's side, and Scots, Irish, English and Welsh from my mother's side).

I've never heard the term African-British, nor Hispanic British or South-East Asian British.

But I have heard the term Greek-American and Armenian-American ALL the time from that side of my family.

I think it has a lot to do with personal feelings of heritage. A lot of minorities seem to prefer the hyphenated terms maybe because they never felt any affinity to the US as a home. I don't immediately see how the could feel such an affinity towards a place/country/continent they 've never been to, but hey... it's just how they feel I guess. I don't understand it, but neither do I understand how some people like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

The only reason I call myself Greek/British is because I actually grew up and lived in both countries, so I do feel that I'm part of both (just in case my dual nationality and two passports weren't confirmation enough for some...), but I would never refer to myself as "Scottish" or "Irish" just because my maternal grandparents were from there. I'll identify my ethnicity as such but not my personal feelings of cultural identity.

That's why i don't bother with ethnic titles, all they do is create more barriers and labels. Nationality is a social construct based entirely on geographical restrictions that will some day be gone. I'm a human being first, a man second and a Caucasian Greek Brit last.

Self entitlement bullshît! All that PC crap went out in the 90s . Ive worked in the service industry most my life, most my coworkers ive known no matter what race can't even stand the "stereotypical" people of their own race and will refer to them or others in the most racist terms at times. Doesn't matter black , white, Arab , Mexican etc. if youre an ass hole your probably gonna get referred to as the nastiest term pertaining to your race at times when tensions are highest. If youre gonna name call to be hurtful you may as well go for the jugular and strike deep if you have that much dislike for someone. I'm in an interracial marriage and have a mixed race child so don't think I'm just some racist dik. I have good close friends of all races and they all pretty much have the same mindset on this. If youre a respectable individual you get respect, but if you walk around with your hat sideways and your pants around your knees acting ignorant or your a toothless meth head/crackhead fuk, or you just constantly play the race card, OR you over use "racist" terms just to be a racist dick without reason, etc. etc. don't expect me to refer to you as a credit to your race. You're an embarrassment and a disgrace to the human race and it just so happens we have nasty names to label you as and they're color coordinated. Im not a racist i just dont like you! (nobody here)That's all from this poor white trash honky cracker ;-).

I'm a mixed dude, with a huge American flag tattooed on my arm...

Phuck what any1 thinks about me, until you either start signing my checks or paying my bills.

I always thought the various forms listed Caucasion- Non Hispanic as the "white" option?

I suppose "negroid" would be too phonetically similar to a certain slang term to be used as a more accurate descriptor along "caucasion" lines though.

OP, your answer is politically correct wording though European American would technically be a better pairing to African American.

If your'e White your'e White, if you're Black, you're Black.

Issue I have is how do I know someone is African American and not Jamaican American or Haitian American, or consider themselves American in the first place?

What about the people that come here from South Africa? Most of them are white and are more rightly considered African-American than others but get in trouble when filing out the paperwork because they aren't black.

the only color that really matters is green...the gov encourages racism, if we fight amongst ourselves it keeps us off their back. the whole pc thing is the gov's way of keeping the masses at odds with each other, if we ever come together the gov would be in trouble and they know this!!!

Well put

Only three anthropological race groups negroid, caucasoid and mongoloid

Forgot Australoid but it doesnt really matter since the concept of racial grouping is merely a reflection of the human mind and not really scientifically founded.

Do you like to be called Jewish American? Lol

I had never considered it, but maybe I should in the interest of PC butthurtness.

Hebrew-American? Chosen-American? :D

My wife refers to me as "nappy Jew-beard". Not PC at all. I should sue her.

I think Bill Hicks said it best in one of his stand up bits
“Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves"
