What gets YOU motivated to work out?

I'm just curious as to what motivates most of you guys to hit the gym (or work out in general). I'm not looking for you guys to really come on here and just say "motivation come from within brah - you either got it or you don't!!!" over and over....

Some people (probably most people on here) enjoy working out and would rather do that than just about anything else. And I got that. But the majority of our society needs that extra "boost" to get their ass in gear. Some take preworkouts that get your blood pumping and motivate you to get out and lift or run. Some have a specific song list that motivates them. Some are sick of how they feel and/or look and THAT motivates them to change. That kind of goes hand-in-hand with people who get more motivated by positive results.

As I talk to more people about this I realize that the majority of Americans have let computers, video games, movies and TV shows take a front seat to getting out and being active. Personally, I have a workout partner ("battle buddy" for the other Army Folk) that has been a gym rat since he was 12-13. Not to mention we kinda HAVE to work out, considering we have to pass a PT test. One big motivator there is the fact that we can actually witness our PT Scores going up, and that's a HUGE factor in getting our ass back to the gym over and over.

The fact of the matter is I'm a single dad of 2 young kids and I'm also a SGT in the Army - so I have other soldiers to take care of even after the work day is over. It gets hard to self motivate at times - but I found what works for me. And yes, sometimes taking my Mesomorph is the ONLY thing that helps me change into gym clothes and get my ass in gear.

So what motivates you? If you just love working out, what's your favorite thing about it?

I start my day at 3:00am with my first meal. At 4:00am I show up at the gym. Usually there's only a hand full of people there. I walk in with a plan- Get Bigger. I don't have to wait to use anything and it feels like its "my" gym. When I leave, I know I accomplished my goal, and I start my day in a good mood.

I like being more muscular than most people. When I slack off and shrink I hate it and that motivates me at times.

I think about comments made to me while growing up(I was beyond skinny) and that motivates me. Same thing with old pictures.

My biggest motivation is feeling good about myself.

knowing that my ex is fat now and everytime i push myself to go into better shape makes her look a little more bad

You pretty much wrote my response for me! Thanks!

Hummm...several things.

When I started waaay back my freshman year in high school it was because I was a shrimp. About 100 pounds of wussy... I wasn't that picked on, or anything, but I just wanted to be more athletic and bigger. I always was drawn to Arnie, and the likes and knew I could do that to if I tried hard enough. My first goal was to bench the plates...and it just never stopped.

Part of it is losing the work I have put in. I've been at this for 17+ years now, and have come a long way. Somedays its the thought of losing all the hard work I have put in that keeps me going.

A lot of the time it was my friends, family, and other folks. When I was a senior in high school, and getting some good size I heard "When you get to college you are going to quit and get fat." Well, I didn't so when I was in college I heard "When you graduate and get married you are going to quit and get fat"...well, I didn't. When I was married, and riding a desk job I heard "when you have kids you are going to quit and get fat" well...it still has not happened. I don't want ANYONE to ever tell me they "told me so" about quitting and getting fat.

Lastly, I love to look great for my wife. I know she works hard to look good for me, and I love looking good for her. I like to know she gets turned on looking at me, just I get hot looking at her.

And hey, who doesn't like to look huge? God has deeply blessed me with motivation and good genetics...I feel its my responsibility to use those gifts I have been given. I like to motivate others, and help other guys out.

I think you either have it or you don't... Plain and simple

I know that's not what you wanna hear but I literal dream about lifting weights lol I've been like this since I was a Kid.

Anyway... Sub'd! I like to know how to get my wife motivated to workout. I think it's bull$h!t she's over weight when I keep myself in top shape.

This...really, it is this simple. There are a small percentage of people who can make it to the gym on a consistant basis. There is just a fraction of that small percent who have the mental toughness to actually push it hard enough to make the real gains.

"Everybody wants to be big, but ain't nobody want to lift no heavy arsed weight" I say this to myself probably at least once per session...usually when facing the heavy for that day.

I saw Terry Bradshaw naked in the movie "Failure to Launch".

I got what you guys are saying. Motivation comes from within...I'm not really looking for pointers on how I can get myself to get more motivated! But I figure this could help people that have a weak moment of "Well...instead of going to the gym today I'm gonna buy a whole season of my favorite TV show on DVD and veg out on the couch for the next 6 hours".

And this too. Figure everyone uses different method to motivate.

I am forced to do PT in the Army...BUT I am also an NCO (Non-Commisioned Officer for those of you that don't know what an NCO is). This means it is up to me to not only make sure I attain and set the standard - but I also have to push my soldiers to set the standard. When their PT score goes up noticably and their Body Fat% goes down it's more motivating to me than anything else in the world! Best example: had a Specialist who wanted to go to the promotion board, but couldn't because he was a PT FAILURE! Not to mention he was at 30% body fat. Every day at 1700 (5:00pm) when every0one was going home, I stayed after with him to do cardio (mostly). Month after month he made progress (in the Army if you lose a certain BF% per month you can be taken off of the "Overweight Program") and eventually exceeded the PT standards. Once he hit the point where he was out running most of his peers...his motivation skyrocketed! Success is a great motivator! I'm happy to say that he did go to the board eventually and is now a Sergeant (and watch him pass me!!!)!

Now - I do agree with the sentiment of "I don't wanna be skinny". I've always been the smaller dude. At one point I got sick and tired of it and just started working out. Didn't really know what I was doing or what I should take I just knew that all the huge guys are at the gym and they weren't born like that. Pride and Self-Esteem coupled with some immediate results will motivate anyone!

There really is not much you can say to someone who doesn't want it for themselves. Just like you can't get a drunk to quit drinking just from a pep talk...they have to experience pain to stop and change their habits. You can't get a fatty off the couch unless they are faced with pain. Either the Dr. says they got xxx amount of days left to live, they have a child/grandchild and want to be able to play with them, maybe their spouse leaves them...either way it takes some form of pain motivation to get them up and moving. Today's people aren't motivated to do anything anymore. If it isn't free, or I can't do it perfect the first time, I don't want it...especially if it is hard, takes hard work, or causes pain.

Working out may be genetic, it may be from the way you were raised, it may have started from your own "pain". Any way you cut it, there is something that sets you apart if you have "it" and there is no way you are going to talk someone into having "it" that doesn't. Maybe, just maybe, you can talk to them enough to try it for a while for you, or maybe for them...but they have to have that spark within to stick it out, and truly become more than just a wise arse in a jump suit going through the motions.

That weak moment you speak of...that is the moment of truth whether you have "it" or not. When that alarm goes off at 4:20 am and I so badly want those 2 extra hours of sleep. You know what goes through my mind? Two things...

#1. I know I will hate myself later that day if I don't workout. I would rather deal with the pain now, than the self hate later from being a lazy arse hole.

#2. I think exactly of those lazy people who would have hit snooze...and how much I don't want to be that person. I want to be an elite...more than everybody else. I won't settle for second best. Somewhere, RIGHT NOW, someone out there is getting up and working harder than me, getting stronger than me, and going through more pain than me...am I a pu55y? He!! no, they aren't stronger than me...I'll show them. I'm getting up right now and kicking a55 in this workout...nobody is going to out-work me.

The fact that we are a special breed. We have the motivation, and the drive to get things accomplished. We don't rely on anyone else to get our goals accomplished. Furthermore we don't blame anyone for us not meeting our goals. If we can't get out that last rep, or we didn't bench as much as we did last week..it's not his, or her or anyone else’s fault, but our own. And most people will never be able to obtain the level of obedience and discipline we have.

Knowing that it's on me..is my motivation.

..and hoping that the ex is enjoying her fat-slob-of-a-new-boyfriend.

One of my other big motivators right now is the fact that my wife is in Afghanistan. I wanna see her jaw drop when she sees me for the first time. I've always been fit - whether it was playing sports from 5 years old on...to doing Army PT. But I've thrown it into overdrive now!! And with the results I can actually notice it just motivates me that much more!!!

Just wanting to get bigger. I see bigger guys, and want to get bigger than them. Also, listening to music on the way to the gym helps me get pumped to hit the weights.

I work in a psych hospital and on any given day I have to be able to take down someone who out weights me by 50+ pounds being in shape is live or die where I work.....and it's my time for me, no phone, no talking just my time...

If I dont lift it isnt good. I seriously believe lifting has kept me from a lot of bad things. If I go enough days without lifting I get depressed.

Plus being able to lift heavy ass weight feels pretty damn good. Knowing I can do something "most" people cant puts a smile on my face.

Btw DriveHard how is the deadlift coming along?

X2^^^. I've always said if I did not workout the way I do I would beat people.

I literally have dreams about being at the gym... Don't know what I'd do without it!

HI-JACK (sorry, I will make it quick)
Bah, not the best. After that last competition I tweeked my back a bit and had to go see a chiro for a couple times. I just started getting back heavy in the last couple of weeks. Did 615 for a single at the end of my workout yesterday, and it felt good...so maybe I will get back to making some progress.

I have been lifting weights for 11+ years now and its just second nature for me at this point. Im a student and dont go to school to socialize, so the gym is my time to get out when im not doin homework or studying. I know where your comeing from neofrost83...im an Army veteran and for my whole enlistment I was the only one in my platoon that did anything physical outside of PT time. I would get taped after every PT test by the XO and he would just laugh, because i was "over weight" by the Army standards, but was solid muscle. After the first 3x of being tapped, he yelled at my NCOIC to stop sending my strong a** to the company! I tried to get the rest of my platoon in the gym but they would rather go down range and get drunk, which wasnt my idea of fun. Much respect to you neofrost83 for serving our country and your doing big things for your soldiers, which is what its all about! While everyone else was out getting Article 15's, i was doing myself good instead. Hats off to you neofronst 83! Im sure your a great inspiration to your soldiers and children for sure!

2 things motivate me.....wanting to get stronger than all the other guys in the gym and N.O. xplode.....when i take this it makes me want to lift every weight in the gym

Actually, Tough Chick, I know exactly what you're talking about. First off I'm an MP (military police), so it's a common thing in my field for the soldiers to go to the gym and/or do MMA. Not only are we cops, but the people we arrest are soldiers trained to kill, and many just got back from combat!

Also it really is just good "me time". Throw on the tunes, drown out the world, and release the endorphines!!!

Thanks, man. I actually had a Platoon Sergeant on the All-Army Power Lifting Team!!! AND HE HAD TO BE TAPED!!! The greatest thing was that he had the nutritionist at the hospital on speed dial...because he actually failed a tape test! He then went to the nutritionist, who gave him the buoyancy test that is ultra accurate when measuring body fat%. Get this - he's 5% body fat!!!! Christ! But yea gym time has become squad cohesion time for us. Rank goes out the window - my stripes don't make me stronger! Since we seem to have such a good time at the gym, we have gotten A LOT more participation! It's pretty cool. So generally speaking I do a PT session at the gym in the morning with my squad, and a PT session by myself in the afternoon for some "me time".

Mesomorph makes N.O. Explode look like a pixie stick.

I watch Pumping Iron clips or any videos of Arnold posing from the 70's/80's and listen to Motorhead.

(Sub in Rugby videos for Arnold videos as well)

Then I get to the gym and I see people sitting on benches talking instead of working out and I get more pissed and really hit it hard.

All the everyday bull**** that ****s with you. Currently the break up of what was supposedly a solid 3 and a half year relationship, death in the family of someone who was full of life and way to young to go, being pushed financially into a bad position and having to rent on my own for 6months which meant I was prety much spending everything I had for that time to cover rent bills food etc which made being self employed even more difficult. Have had some of my best most focused lifting in that time though and its only getting better. **** you world!

Heavy loud music in my headphones for inspiration as well as mental videos on youtube by the likes of Kevin Frasard.

Also the fact I know that whilst getting stronger leaner and bigger gradually I am improving and getting closer to where I want to be.

I have a lot of anger. Lifting gets it out!

Slight rant but definitely slightly held back ha.

Also anyone who ****ing says "oh you'll never be big or have muscle because you dont have the genetics for it" **** OFF! I remember my Deadlift being difficult at 40-50kg when I started and now its at 130kg and still going up, same with my squat [used to find 40kg so hard when I started and repped 4 good ones at 110kg today]so who the **** is someone to tell me I can't get bigger or stronger. Some people have such negative defeatist attitudes it drives me insane.

Oh and I know those above weights aren't impressive by anyones standards here but at about 10.5 stone at the moment so thats not terrible [keeps getting stronger!]

how do u shrink? When ur deloading 4 an extended time u should keep ur caloric intake high and same with the protein and u should be good bro!
