1911

Who makes the best 1911 model pistol? Im looking into a christmas present for myself and there are so many options. I figure you cant go wrong with american made, so I was looking at Smith and Wesson. What other options do I have

SIG P220 for carry, very good .45 out the box, safe to carry.

If you really want a 1911, look into ParaOrdinance(13-14 round double stack mags) STI (spartan basic model $600 only) ugly as hell but works like a charm and you can redo the "paint job".

Kimber, too expensive for nothing, Colt ( alot of complaints), Taurus( A LOT of complaints)......

If I could only have one .45, I'd have a SIG P220(2 weeks) if I could only have 1 1911, I'd go with a higher end Para Ordinance double stack mag.

My vote's for a SIG.............

< but I like revolvers better than D/A's :D

I second Omen and Rugger

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Omen again.

reps to OMEN and Rugger, checked out Para's website and they have some fine weapons. mag capacity for a 45 was 14+ and for a 9mm 18, very good.

You guys ever see Romeo and Juliet, with Leonardo DiCaprio?

Those were some sweet 1911's in that movie.....

RedWolf would be a good person to talk with in regards to weapons. He actually has a website dedicated to gun talk.

H&K USP. /End Thread

Thank you. Agreed. I love my 1911's, but go with an HK, although SIG's are a close followup for me. I would suggest an hk usp, although my fav is my mark23,....but somehow I doubt you'd pay the $$ for one as i sold my left lung to get one, lol. so,... USP all da way!

colt are i believe the originators of it , real good but expensive. it all depends on how much you want to spend. high end you have kimber, colt and sig. then mid range you have smith and wesson(all smiths are good) i wouldn't bother with reuger or taurus... they just flay out blow !!!

1911 style.....para ord.....top of the line....fu@k kimber id go with nighthawk custom......pure carry and shootability.....HK or Springfield XD or XDM series

edit: xdm .45 will not be released for 3 to 5 months

Without a budget, the question can't be answered. If you are not experienced with 1911s, probably best to look elsewhere. For the $$$, S&W makes a solid 1911, but they also differ a little from original design of the 1911, which some 1911 purists don't like. Here's yours truly running my 1911 from the S&W Performance Center, which is hand built gun and in the 2.5k range:

How are the XDs? I want to get one. Aren't the XDs and XDMs pretty much the same except for some minor changes and a nicer box?

Kimber a high end 1911??? LOL, funny.

Kimbers are garbage, pure casting/MIM parts that are slopped together in a production line which is what you don't want in a 1911. The best 1911 out of the box and IMO the best handgun on the planet is anything Les Baer, best steel, hand fitted and your saving 500+ bucks compared to getting a chickenhawk or wilson combat ( which both of there quality has gone downhill....there skimmping on using cheap parts such as on there mainspring housing and hammers...yeah that's what I want In a true-semi/full built custom 1911 for $2300 a pop )

The other option is get a glock, call it...buy a bunch of good ammo and train with it everything else to me is a novelty/range gun I do like Sigs don't like H&K, there too much of a smoke and mirrors company and even though H&K has some of the best steel for the guns, the ergonomics of the USP is just horrendous and not to mention not user friendly IMO but the same could be said the same for a Berreta...especially when you have to go over the top to rack the slide to manipulate any of the phase number malfunction's .....there might a chance due to the safety on the slide that it could be engaged. Alot of guns look cool, looking cool never tops ease of use out in training or in the real scenario.

Handguns never win wars. Get a rifle or a shotgun first as far as I'm concerned.

Have not heard anything about Wilson quality going down. What's your source on that? The main issue for me with NH is not quality of parts, but QC of guns and prices. Lots of complaints with NH QC of builds and guns being sent back.

Ed Brown, Les B, Wilson, S&W CS, SA Pro, and various custom builders (Rogers, et al) would be on the short list for 1911s worth buying for me.

My good friend has a late 90's model CQB, and as well a recently purchased protector model.....let's just say that the CQB still runs like a champ and the protector model wasnt' worth the 2K+ pricetag....I heard a rumor that when the old staff from Wilson went over to Nighthawk that there was some unethical things going on, sorta like the Hatfield and McCoys'....but what do I know there just rumors, I like Baer, Les is a nut and a pure genius when it comes to Machining ( which is his background,he loves building dragsters and rebuilding old muscle cars ) I would like to get my hands on one of the FBI models that Les built when he was at the Sringfield custom shop, or a Valtro from John Jardine.

Best pistol? AR pistol. :) I kinda like Five-Sevens. And 1911s get me hard. Single stack 1911s fit my hand better than a tailor made glove.

I really like my Kimbers, and Colts. Even the SpringField Armory 1911s are great.

But if you low on cash or want a budget 1911 to start of with. Rock Island work.

I don't think there are any pistols out there that are "good" quality for 500 :)

I cringe at the thought of Rock Island. You can find many good handguns for 500 and less, Sig's offering there CPO gun which are used and a majority police trade ins, My best friend got a prior police issued p220 for about 500 and some change and it shoots like a house of fire, Glocks are a good buy as well as the XD's.

Your best bet is to find a good local range that can rent a few models that you are considering. ( I know this is an old thread but I don't care ) There is no point buying a gun that does not fit your person or more importantly your hand.

Being a gym rat and kind of a big guy, most people are surprised the caliper of weapon you can conceal on your person. Big shoulders and a small waist come in handy ;)

Back on topic. I love the 1911 in the colt model!

My duty weapon is a sig p229. The 9mm sucks ass, but Army can only have 9mm pistols, so whatever. I am a HUGE fan of the no safety though. Guns ready to fire when I pull it out every time.
