"Shogun" Rua vs "Iceman" Liddell @ UFC 97 - the AM thread

I ve got a feeling chuck is gonna ko em, but im not basing that on anything other than the fact that he was and still is to some degree my favorite fighter.

Man I hope so for 2 reasons.

1. I like Chuck 1000 times more

2. Another Shogun/Forrest fight? Gag. ...plus just think how great a forrest or Thiago vs Chuck fight would be

i would love to watch thiago fight forrest and see chuck fight the winner both i have waiting for!!!!!!!

hes prolly 6'1 1/2 maybe next time your licking his calve muscle ask him

Don't mention those calves, they make me painfully envious. So well formed, just a joy to look at. Am I the only one to have noticed it? Couture's calves, on the other hand, look far inferior.

I live in the same town as him and have maybeee seen him once or twice at the bars hahahaha. hes awesome and i hope he has a last good run because he definalty in my top 5 favs. too hard to pick a fav

Some say that his belly is part of his built, that he simply cannot get rid of it.

I heard the same thing. You can see his abs through it usually. Hey, when your sleeping on the mat after your ko'ed from a counter punch, the belly doesnt mean a whole lot to you!! Yeah, im a chuck fan too.

I too believe his stomach is just part of his genetic makeup. I don't think he can rid himself of it. It doesn't bother me though. If all the training he does can't get rid of it, I don't think anything will. (His partying could have something to do with it!):trink26:

Can't or won't. At the TUF season 1 rap party it was said that he was enjoying the vegas "snow" along with plenty of drinkys. Also he waxed Willa Ford (the first half of the show's host before Dana just took it over) The guy was a big ol pimp. Point being ol Randy wasn't tying one on like big Chuck and thats probably why Randy looks a bit more like a mid 20s althlete 'body wise not hair wise'

I will probably be betting money on Chuck for this one, hopefully by KO. I will say this if he cant KO him and it goes to decision then you know Chuck is getting old and just cant pull that trigger as fast anymore. Then I bet Chuck fights Forrest like was stated earlier which should be a great fight but I doubt Chuck will win that.

i did a drop in at the pit. chuck was on the bike and that was a year ago i was so bad then they stuck me on the bag then just did tai pads and kicking shield. i got gassed after an hour. that was in my party years right when i turned 21

if you like talk to him you will have 5 people tell you to not bother him and wont be respected hahaha. it was scary and i felt like a feg. out in downtown hes super chill he knows hes the **** down there

I hope your conditioning has changed for the better, bigwhite. Here's another Chuck shot, and yes, the belly strikes me: Invalid Link Removed

I would think Chuck's reaction to the comment would be the real complication haha. But yeah probably not best to bother mr. iceman period. My buddy who was the jib operator on the season said chuck got drunk and told him he could kick his ass right this second and tell the casino it was his fault.

when a superstar is training you dont really wanna be like hey my name is blah blah and i dont have anything to offer you i jsut wanan say hi would be really annoying. he doesnt mind if you talkk to him after or when hes out and about hes amazinfg everyone loves him here but you just use common sence and dont talk to him and try not to look at him and stare in the pit. if i could offer anything i would try but **** i would prolly even hold the pads wrong hahah. and yeah he does have his fun! im sure somedays are very loose training but when i saw him i think he might of been rehabing a little. basically i would have no problem coming up to him on the street saying im a fan and shake his hand but at his training facility someone with my experience at the time 6 months 2-3 times a week for an hour i dont know a damn thing and basically i was scared and wasnt my place to talk to him. thats so cool you were on one of the sets tho. i really dig that show. are you gonig to try to do it again?

If you look closely at the photo I posted, you see that the abs are actually visible despite the belly. It really seems to be an awkward built, rather than Chuck being fat. Looks pretty bad, though.

If I could have I wouldn't be at my current desk job *sob sob*
It was a fluke coming off of a espn2 reality show I'd do anything and everyone in audio dept. went straight to vegas once it finished and I got to go along. I didn't know much about ufc then and certainly didn't know who Iceman or the natural were. After seeing what they do for training I was hooked. Randy was crazy nice. Chuck was still cool but a little distracted. I think he was bangin chicks a few times a week and then we just started seeing him always around Willa. But he had the intimidation factor down pat. I think it had to do with wanting to avenge his loss with Randy pretty bad.
Anyway I think my audio days are over... I wasn't that great at it anyway. LOL

With all the talk about Chuck "banging chicks", let's not forget that he is not what most would consider an attractive man... as opposed to, say, soccer star Ronaldo.

I find the idea weird that he suddenly is a womanizer...

Well it is Vegas. A little fame goes a long way. And he probably had more fame in LV since UFC is out there.

In '04 I'd say for sure. Now is a different story. The guy appeared on almost half an episode of entourage. He's on 22oz bottles of Mickeys. He's gonna come out with his own brand of ketchup pretty soon....jk jk

Just found this very intersting piece on sherdog, it's from today:

Two things stand out: Villefort saying "but if the fight goes past the second round, I believe Liddell will swallow Shogun. His cardio is just unbelievable.

and, if you check out the photo, Liddell's belly seemingly smaller (yes, he wears a t-shirt, but still...)

Ah man thats exciting. He does look smaller. I'd like to see the new and improved Chuck come back and knock around a few more people before he's done.

My thought. He once said he walks around at about 222 lbs (on his 6'1.5'' frame), but certainly doesn't look it on the photo. 210 he might be here.
All muscle, no belly!

Almost there...

Kinda funny that this seems to be the most talked about fight on that card. Doesn't even seem like there's a tittle fight hehe.

This is, as was UFC 79, do or die for Chuck. And even if he wins, he will not have regained the respect he once commanded. For this to happen, he'd need a decisive win over Rampage.

I found this on mmajunkie:

"I've made it very clear to Chuck, very clear," said White to the Canadian Press, "[that] it's not about money. It's not about this or that. Chuck is one of my good friends. Chuck has cemented his legacy in the UFC and in the fight game. I'm not even saying if he wins, unless he looks incredibly impressive – I mean he's going to have to go out there and dazzle me, for me to want Chuck to still fight."

What is interesting is that this Match, as mmajunkie writes correctly, is also similar to Liddell vs Silva as again, years ago, this would have been a dream match with two LHWs at the top of their game battling each other.

I pray Chuck will land a first round knockout.

I do too. You know he looked great against W. Silva. They both did. Whos to say they don't have more fights in them. WSilva looks better in UFC than Shogun by a mile.

Dude on UFC.com there's a video of Dana saying flat out if Chuck doesn't do something amazing in this fight he is out on his ass.

Yeah, Dana is pretty blunt here. Not even winning is enough, it must be a devastating victory over Rua.

It does make sense, though. If Chuck loses, he has to go - the UFC cannot continue to pay 500,000 US$ to a fighter who would then have lost 4 of his last 5 fights.

If it's a very narrow victory, Chuck can save face by saying, "I won my last fight, but decided to leave the game". Because if Chuck delivers a meager performance even after being tuned by ATT, how would he look like against a Machida? Not too good, I'd say.

I keep my fingers crossed for Liddell.

I have always been a huge Shogun fan, so that is the way I am currently leaning. His performances in the UFC have been lower echelon WEC-quality as of yet, though; if his win is anything but dynamic, I will have lost hope.

Shogun needs a huge performance tonight, and based o n his last 2 I just dont see it. I see Chuck ko'ing him in the 2nd rd.

I want him to fight the winner of the griffin thiago fight. he wont get a title shot that fast because say machia wins he will face page if rashad wins page will fight so it will be awhile i think if machia lost he would take time off to train and it would be too long of a wait for lidell because times an issue for his career. i dunno its jsut a thought but maybe since he lost he will have to bounce back fast or something. i just want chuck to win so bad!!!!! ahhh!!!

So now it really is all over for Chuck. Did not expect him to look that bad...
Will he tell the world for the 3rd time "I made a mistake and got caught"...?

As long as it is available: Invalid Link Removed

Indeed. I was very dissapointed. As a mattter of fact, the whole card was pretty flat i would say. Stick a fork in chuck, he is all done. Thanks for the memories.

I think it is time for Chuck to call it a career. Not even a gate keeper IMO

Any videoclips? :o(

That fight sucked the other fights sucked... The only fight that was good was the two 90 pound dudes who were ripping each other up. Dunno who they were but one looked like a terrorist:)

lol, lol, lol no doubt, i think you mean matt wiman and sam stout. that was a decent fight your right. Wow, ive got some alliteration going on in this post huh?

The video was there, as expected, it got taken down quickly by youtube - it's always the same, you gotta catch 'em fast after the event.

Please, Chuck, save face and declare that you retire from this sport. I found this interesting piece on sherdog.com that sums it up well, written in the corresponding thread there:

"I hope this will keep the Chuck nutthuggers at bay now. I like Chuck don't get me wrong I just don't think his approach to being a fighter can get him any more wins. I am surprised he held the belt as long as he did. The dude is a pot belly drunk. I mean if you compare Chuck and Randy check out the difference in physique. Also Chucks other problem is his virtually non existing adaptation of fighting style. The guy never makes changes to his arsenal. He spoke about how he fixed his stance to keep his left hand up and cover himself but from what I saw it was dropped like always and Shogun saw this. That's why Shogun kept trying that right hand. Anyways this my take on that.

Pretty much reflects my feelings.

As a chuck fan, I too, hope that he can do the right thing, and just let it go. Have some dignity about it.

Get it while it's hot.

Shogun looked vastly improved, but: this fight only lasted one round, so I will still need to see his conditioning to claim he is back in form. As well, it seems as if any Top-10 LHW could switch Chuck off at this point, so I will reserve my re-coronation of Shogun until his next fight!
