Thanks tat, i will definitely keep this in mind. We are in the process of moving shortly, so the wife wants to wait until we are in the new house and settled first. I think it's a good idea too, so we're going to wait for a bit.
I grew up with rottweilers when i was younger and loved them. Fantastic animals. I always wanted a doberman though. I had a buddy that had a few when i was younger and they are great dogs. I just want a big dog at home with my wife when i'm not there.

lol.. see I'm almost the opposite.. I've had dobies, but always wanted a Rottie.. dobes are very high energy, so be prepared to get worn out with walks and playing all the time.

Nice. When trip and i were kids our rottweiler would pull us all around the neighborhood on our sled in the winter. Rotty's are freakin' tanks. The last one i had was a solid 135lbs. You don't walk those dogs, they walk you haha.

sounds like what my kid wants our dobie to do... my male was about 100lbs or so when I had him, and my girl is around 80lbs, she is very very tall too though, most people mistake her for a male the way she is built.. def. better built than the other dobies I see around my area.

Nah....screw the rotties and the dobies. Sure, they're nice and mean looking dogs. But if you want a guard dog who'll be awesome with the family, loyal to the owner, easy to keep, smart as all hell, and has a guard bark like thunder running through the motorhead stage set-up, go for one of these guys:

Ya just can't beat a Dane!! :woohoo: That's Maximus - my boy. When the pic was taken at the end of 2007, he was just over 1 year old and they don't stop growing until after 2 years. Big? Oh yeah...really big... He may not be Crader's English Mastiffs, but he can outrun 'em!
(Side note: Seeing a Dane run beside an Italian Greyhound chasing a quad is hilarious!!!)
Oh, and thanks Mace for pointing me to this thread. I gotta check out RPN more often!! These look like they'd be really good for Max. We already feed him premo food (Eagle Pack Hollistic Natural, 8 cups+ each day), but he has the occasional dander that shows up on his black fuzziness. The added fats would definitely do some good for him.

I do like mean looking dogs haha. Damn, that is one monster of dog you have there tim! One of my neighbors has a dane and it looks like he's walking a horse lol. This product should be very good for him. I'll always be partial to my rotties though.

dobies are great family dogs too.. my son has grown up with mine and loves her to death.. that dog would do anything for him too and would never harm him no matter what he does to her. I've seen her get between my son and other people she doesnt know to keep him safe...almost seems at times she thinks that he is hers.

I had 2 Danes but they both were biters. I love them though, I need to get pics of my Mastiffs up. The dobie and the baby is super cute.

Very awesome pic, Tattooed... I'm amazed at how gentle Max is with kids. He's high strung for a Dane (still very much a puppy), but whenever a kid comes up to pet him, the younger they are, the gentler he is. Awesome how they're like that. Even after we found out that the wife was pregnant, he completely stopped jumping up or being rough with her. It's like magic!! You just have to love a big dog....

At the moment, my gf and I have a small dog, hes about 18lbs.. I want a BIG dog, but I wont do that until I have a house with a yard. I usually hate little dogs, but he is NOT a yapper, and he acts like he is the biggest dog on the block. Ive seen him steal a bone out of a 75lb pit bulls mouth without even thinking twice. Hes the boss.

luckily since hes small.. a homemade diet is pretty easy. he gets 2 meatballs a day with about a 1/8th cup of store bought kibble (good for teeth).
Our recipe is 40% meat / 30% oat or grain / 30% veggies
usually its about 50/50 gound beef/turkey or liver
either whole wheat pasta or brown rice
and sweet potatoes, corn, peas, etc (no tomatoes)
+ garlic
we mix all of that up and make little meatballs out of it...cook them at 350 until cooked and then we freeze whatever we dont need in the next 5 days.
When I get a larger dog, Ill prob continue the same thing.. but instead of meatballs.. you can easily just turn this into a crock pot recipe. The meatballs are just easy because they are proportioned when we make them.

havent seen anything that says this... a lot of people have different ideas of what is good/bad for dog food.... you can tell how a dog reacts to food very easily... especially if you live in an area where you have to pick up the poop :gas:
just keep an eye on him.. watch for extra scratching or loose stool which would indicate a allergy
a lot of breeds are allergic to specific things... so if you do some research you can find what key foods to avoid.

that would happen to any dog who was on a store-bought dog food diet. dogs cannot handle such sudden changes in diet.. so it prob wasnt the chop meat that was the problem, but the fact that he had never had it before (at least in that quantity). plus im sure he got into a lot more that he would eat in a 'normal' meal.
People are the same though. Dont eat meat for a few years and then suddenly eat 1/2 lb of 80/20 ground beef.. youll get the runs.

I had an Akita that I loved to pieces , he would have died for me. But they are one owner dogs for the most part. I had him professionally trained and he still attacked one of my kids friends and put over 100 stitches in the back of her head. I will never own the breed again, especially with kids around. He loved my kids but hated all others.

i just looked those up, those are really cute! we actually almost got a shar-pei lab mix, he was pretty big for the space i have but he had been at the humane society for a long time 
fortunately, he ended up getting adopted before we came to get him! extra fortunate for my girlfriend, as he jumped up and bit her in the boobs the first time we took him outside, lol

I really thought long and hard about a Pyre. They're gorgeous, and VERY big dogs. But, they need a lot of room to roam, and can never ever be trusted off-leash. Being a mountain dog, and a herder/worker, their natural territory is very vast and they're fearless to roam and stand up to anything in their path. Plus, with them, all of my black clothing would have to go bye-bye...they shed a ton.
I still say go for the Dane!!! No yard needed, don't need a big house - just to be around people and a good walk every day. LAZY dogs are awesome - not those high-strung little kickin biznitches!!
Back on topic...showed this to the wife and she's all for it. Looks like Max is gonna have to get some new cookies!! :woohoo:

This is true i just got a puppy (9 weeks)he is the cutiest thing but when he get grown he will look something vicious. When i picked him up the father and mother of this puppy went crazy and i had been around them before and played with them. I was really kinda intemidated by the male. (165 Lbs) of pissed of Mastiff is not something to play with. The mother of my pup weighed 135 Lbs before her pregnancy (she is only 2)

just make sure you transition slowly over a week or 2. dogs dont like sudden diet changes. and the size of the meatballs has to depend on the weight of the dog. my gf wants a dane or a mastiff for our next dog.. I worry about getting something so massive... eventhough im trying to buy a house with a yard.. thats a hell of an animal.
how much food does a 100lb++ dog go through in a month??
all in all... i need a dog who can be submissive to my 18lb male. i figured a well-tempered female should be fine. my moms dog is 50lbs (female lab/shephard mix) and they play all the time without and problems...but she see's him as the alpha male

From my experience and reading, the bigger the dog, the more "lazy" they are. Max is awake and moving around for about 5 hours each day. They sleep light (guard dog mode), but often - especially when growing like he still is. At 1 year and 4.5 months, he's probably around 120, 33-34" at the shoulder. AKC standard is 36" for males, but I talked to a guy at the local PetCo who had 2 38 inchers. Naturally, I asked how Max stacked up. He said he was bigger at his age than any of his dogs were. Yeesh! And Max's dad, "Cadillac Jax", went a solid 180. Big boy eats 8-9 cups of food every day, and goes through 2 30lb bags/month.
As with any dog, termperment has a lot to do with the family lines and the breeding. I'm lucky that my monster is relatively gentle with other dogs. He is VERY dominant, though, but doesn't know how to fight. They can play VERY rough, just because of their size. His paw is as big as my hand, and he's caused bruising just because of a misplaced "shake" command. Crader said that her's were biters, which could be very dangerous. Their mouths are huge and deep, and they are strong as hell for their size. Max can literally drag me across the carpet just by my pantleg if I'm laying on the floor (keep in mind that I go about 300lbs). Proper training is key, of course.
Typically, though, I'd say that unless you get the rare dominant male like I have, they should get along with just about everyone and everything. They're extremely gentle, tolerant, and hardy. They're also very needy for humans - don't EVER tie one outside on its own!! A yard is helpful, but they are definitely inside dogs. Just take 'em for a walk everyday and he'll be just fine.
