Job responsiblities added to

So here's my question. At my current job, we had our public access coordinator leave and had the local library take over the public access channel. Due to legal stuff with the library, some people who used the public access channel for religious stuff got their panties in a wad now that the public library doesnt allow that to be posted. So, we have to take it back over. They are going to pawn it off on me. I am a LAN Engineer where I work and have a decently full plate as it is, I am fine with taking on the extra responsibility, but they mentioned nothing about giving me more money for doing this. My question is, should I ask before, or after I start doing this for more money. Again, there was a full time person taking care of this before, and it doesnt look like they are going to hire anyone to take this over, but just let me take care of it.

Tell them that it seems as if you should be adequately compensated if you are going to be doing two full-time jobs. Don't wait to end up undercompensated and overworked.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work that way when someone leaves and you cop all of their work. I would not say anything and just get on with it. If you intend on working up the companies ladder then instances like this will not go unnoticed. Just today i was reading "Think and grow rich" by Napoleon Hill and there was a remark about always doing more work then whats required to stand out above the rest. I cant remember it word for word. I'd accept and if it simply becomes to much then mention it to your superior about either a pay rise or hiring an assistant etc.
 
I'm thinking I may just mention it and see what kind of response I get... I've never asked for a raise from them before, so now would be a good time.
I've been at this company for almost 10 years now.

I would absolutely ask tat. There is nothing wrong in doing that. People that work hard and show good work ethic deserve to be compensated for going above and beyond. They try to do this to us in nursing all the time. If you don't ask and pursue it, it may never happen. I encourage you, take the initiative! Good luck man. :)
 
yeah if you've been there for 10 years then they obviously know your a loyal employee. It would be worth mentioning that your not overly happy with the new situation.

I dont want to tell them I'm not happy with it, I dont want to be viewed as negative... I'm OK with this, pending I get a fat ass raise.. Its going to take 10g's to make me happy, seeing as the guy before that did this made 40k, I dont think I would be asking too much.

Thoughts? Should I even put a number out there or see if they offer up anything?

I have done it i the past. In fact i'm in the process of doing it again. There is nothing wrong with putting a number out there for them to consider and negotiate if need be. I've always taken the more aggressive approach which often ends with a great outcome. I say get in there and tell them exactly how you feel about the situation and that you'd be willing to take on the extras for some compensation. They may very well value your initiative and grant your request.
 
well, i plan on talking to my boss tomorrow about it so we'll see... i'll keep things updated.

Provided you are able to keep up, I would phrase it exactly like that. Tell them they will be getting the job done, and SAVING $25000 a year (always shoot high...tell them $15k if you will be happy with $10k).

Weakness here will be viewed just as that...weakness. Know your own worth, and don't be afraid to let THEM know that YOU know what you are worth.
 
This is a double edged sword. If you can take on the responsibilites of a full time worker the question your superiors will, or should, ask is "what have you been doing all along?"

One of the best ways to approach something like this is put together a propopsal that involves added responsibility and $ for you as well as the possibility/probabality of needing a part-time or per diem co-worker.

I know if you came to me saying that you had the time to do another person's work plus yours it would really start the wheels spinning in my head.

I know a lot of companies don't look at it this way, but I pay by accomplishment. If there "x" to do, and you get it all done within 20 hours then more power to you. Missions/tasks are built into cost (cost per unit, etc.) NOT necessarily mandatory 4o hours. If you can keep up with job #1, and still have time for job #2 that will SAVE me money by not having to hire someone else, then you are a stud in my book and someone to hold on to.

Very good point. I guess it depends on the structure of the work place.

I do know if I see too much down time for my employees it means I have to put a little more effort in keeping them busy ;-)
 
alot of this is a sit and wait for the computer to compile the video.., but there is the added stress of dealing with the crazy people that actually put content on the public access channel. Alot of the previous guy's job was dealing with the nutty religious people calling in/showing up at his house/calling his home phone etc...

Sounds like many of the people i see on a daily basis in my job lol. Look at it this way, it makes it interesting.

I already told my buddy at work if someone shows up at my doorstep like they did Mike's, there would be a video of it on public access of me swiftly breaking their ankle.

TP, you're a huge asset to this company ! Don't make it seem as if this is a burden. Tell them that you see this as an "opportunity to grow as a professional" but that you also need adequate compensation for the additional work. They're also saving on retirement/pension by not hirinig another worker. Just don't make it seem as if you're only going to do it for the $$$, tell them why you want this additional responsibility.

P.S. It sounds as if you're gonna have some great stories to share :lol:
 
no raise. also said that they might be changing my work schedule to some weekends, which is BS. I have my son on weekends and will not give up time with him. This just sucks.

Ouch man, at least you know what you can expect for now on. I wish I had some positive advice, but I really don't. Good luck making it through this ordeal. Hopefully, things will improve for you.

Wow :jaw: ! I can't believe they'd offer no raise for the additional work. Even worse, it seems as if they're messing with your schedule. They must be forgetting about the concept that says "good help ain't cheap and cheap help ain't good."

I think it's time to look for greener pastures ASAP. Hopefully you can still see your son, that would be very bothersome to me if I had a kid.

take this as a blessing in disguise. At least you've discovered at 28 that your company doesn't give a sh1t about you rather then being 45 and finding this out. Time to move on i think, this may prompt them to offer you the payrise you deserve.
 
Sorry to hear that tatoo. Australian is right, now you know where you stand with your company, and after 10 years of loyal service it may be time to look for better opportunities.

Sometimes we decide to make sacrifices in order to advance. However I really hate it when sacrifices are imposed without advancement.

I gotta agree with this. Right now they are showing no loyalty to an employee with a long history with the company. And now they are screwing with your schedule.

Im curious, have they had a change in managment or something big change recently?

It's time to test the waters.
Also, it's a priority thing. Family comes first, always.

It looks from here, that instead of being rewarded, you are getting the opposite. Having you take on another full time job, with no additional pay or perks is nonsense. The line "throw me a frickin bone here" from Austin Powers comes to mind.

How's that newly updated resume looking?
 
talked with the GM, I'm going to roll with this for a bit and then go over some heads and talk with the companies CEO. They promised up and down it would make no big change in my work load, (even though he said in the beginning it'd be a big change) and said that it would only be "on call" every once in a while. I am going to hold them to it and if they are lying, I'm talking directly with the CEO.. she loves me so there shouldnt be a problem hopefully.
 
Don't be afraid to put in a resume and get an offer from another company. They might match if they dont wanna lose u
