No more HD DVD!

Glad I went Blue-Ray. :D
 
Everyone finally decided that they need to cash in quick on disc-format media. Bandwidth is increasing to the masses, bringing hi-def material over the Internet. BIG competitor, and eventual winner, IMO.
 
sony outbribed toshiba in terms of payoffs to fox + warner bros, because they had to win this round. between the betamax flop, and the fact that it was built in on the PS3, sony could not afford to loose this time around.

Dang!. I guess I found one!. Well I somewhat agree. My parents gave me one of their old PCs, a "Viao" desktop. When I went to look up information online about it it seems they are very tight lipped. I mean with a lot of manufacturers all you have to is go on their site and you can find parts information, maintenence manuals. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING is proprietary on a SONY machine. This is why I build my own, but it seems SONY is the worst in this department. I still have two Sony DVD burners in my pcs though.....I don't really hate Sony though because I never paid for any of their products except for the DVD Burners which haven't given me any problems.
 
they just have a lot of the same business mentality as apple, try to create elitism, the fashion more important than the function, etc. plus they play nasty in terms of business agreements.

They do this to maximize their profits and to allow spending for developing new technologies, like OLED TV's. If Sony wasn't around, the electronics industry would be totally different.

Sony had no hand in developing OLED, in fact Kodak was the major player in that. Sony has very rarely brought new technology to the market, and when they have they try to control the industry of how it will be used (This is why betamax died so hard, they kept porn from being on it). They are a parasite company. They take ideas and make them into their own, making them look fancy and new. I personally wanted to see HD-DVD succeed, for it has a platform that is more open. Not the case with Blu-Ray. When HD is completely off the shelves, I think you will see Blu-Ray disc prices go up, because they hold the industry then.

Sony didn't invent OLED, but when there are 50" models they will be because of their R & D. It is not uncommon for one company to invent something and another to perfect it. And the best format does not always succeed, beta was better than VHS (beta went into the professional side after consumer failure), but VHS killed it.
 
So, with all the hype in Sony now, I can sell my betamax and minidisc players on ebay and not get laughed at?

Kidding, I hate Sony. I wanted HD DVD to win because it seemed to be a more friendly alternative. The HD-DVD discs included on the flip side the regular dvd media, so you could build your library of 'new media' without having to instantly shell out for the new player.

It seemed like a great idea to me. Either way I'm glad I didn't take the dive and get a new player. When new formats come out one will always win over the other...except for the CD-rewritable media. That was an everybody wins situation. +/- R/RW so much compatability it'll make your head spin.

My point was that BioOrganic displays has been in R&D by MANY companys for over a decade now. It isnt Sony's release that is going to tip the market in anyway, and I dont think any body will be thanking sony for that technology in the least. Because they release doesnt make them the leader in anything. I think my point wasn't well stated last. And why did beta fail. IT WAS CLOSED. You needed permission from sony to do ANYTHING with it. Porn was SERIOUSLY the killer in that.

I can't believe HD DVD lost. Adult film industry went HD DVD, you could play old DVDs, some of the HD DVDs coming out could be played in an HD DVD player or a regular DVD player, the discs are more durable than Blu Ray, they're cheaper... By all means it should have won!

I'm pissed, I got an HD DVD player for X-Mas. ****ing awesome, just spectacular... Whatever, everything is going to be downloaded in a few years.
 
I'll stick with original DVD format, but if I end up buying a movie that's in Blue-ray, then I'll be sure to pick it up.

Technology is hard to keep up with nowadays, but it sure keeps on getting even more interesting.
 
I'm just glad it's over and one of the formats was chosen. It was a ridiculous battle as it hurt both sony and toshiba. Consumers didn't know which to buy so I'm sure sales sucked a$$
 
I'm sure the public's going to be thrilled that all their DVDs will be completely worthless in a couple years time. That was one of the great upsides of the HD DVD players is that it would play DVDs and even upconvert them to near HD quality. Now they're worthless as blu ray doesn't play them

Blue-ray plays and upscales regular DVD just fine. Where did you hear it will not play them?

First gen Blue-ray were not very durable until a coating was developed. Now they are just fine.
 
Whether HD was better or not the industry had a huge problem on their hands and the better businessman won. Now I'm just going to let my current DVD player do it's thing then maybe in a year or two pick up a blue ray player. Hopefully price will be down by then.

That and their stuff is junk. It is subpar consumer grade that is touted as 'elite', yet is completely disposable. Use it till it breaks, buy another one.

Give me Onkyo (receivers/dvd/cd player) any day.

I will always take an LG or Toshiba TV(have one) over Sony.

Netflix charges me no more to rent Blue-ray over regular DVD. I rarely buy movies as most are not worth owning. :)

PS3 games cost the same as XBox titles.

Yeah, to netflix the extra $15 to buy a disc is irrelevant given how many times it till be rented during its lifespan. For others who do buy movies tho, the $35 cost of a bluray disc (sony is subsidizing every dics pressed still to lower cost) is so much higher than the price of dvds that i'm not sure it will ever reach real mass market. HD-dvd had the chance, as the cost over regular dvds was miniscule, they could even be pressed on the same line. Sony may be able to get the price down. if not, it looks like download on demand may win the hi def war.
 
I seem to be one of the few people that actually has good performance and reliability from Sony stuff, I am typing this on a VAIO laptop while wathcing my Sony plasma, listening to Infinity speakers driven by a Sony ES receiver. If you get the high end products from any manufacturer it will be good. Everyone makes a cheap line and a high end line, buy the high end and it will be good stuff. If you bought cheap crap and expected miracles, you made a mistake.
 
I have a PS3 and will only buy games, I will rent Blu Ray movies since I rarely watch movies more than once. If I really like a movie, I have seen most Blu Ray movies for $25, similar to DVD when it came out in the late 90's. My first DVD player was about $500 back then, so the prices of machines and discs arfe in line since its 10+ years later.
 
BiTTorrents + high speed connection + HD Resolution on Computer = the consumer war was more or less irrelevant.

Man... if you want to get into computers... oh lord. VAIO is the worst idea in the world to buy. The ability to upgrade is all but lost with Sony's propriatary crap. This is from a completely techie view point though, not the mass consumer view. They are the packard bell of today. Once bought, what you see is what you get.

I completely agree with this. I got a hand-me-down vaio desktop from the parents. It looks like they went out of their way to make things proprietary. I looked on the website for a service manual/any kind of manual. They really don't offer anything. I mean I thought the other manufactures were bad like HP!. Apparently Sony is the worst when it comes to propritary "disposable" pcs!. Hey I'm not complaining though, it was free and it works, I just wouldn't spend my money on one!.

Yeah, that's what I was alluding to, just forgot the burn part! ;)

My 42" Wega LCD has very sharp shadows, vivid colours, and an amazing viewing angle and I stole it out from under the salesman's nose. I payed $1600 when it was retailing for $26-2700. So, I don't hate all Sonys.
 
I think that Blue-ray won because most of the companies that produced the dvds decided to make their copies in Blue-Ray instead of HD-dvd because they knew millions of people with PS3's already had BLue-ray and the only people with HD-Dvd players were ones who actually went out and bought a HD-DVD player by itself. If Xbox 360's all came with an HD-DVD player then I think they would still be fighting which one is the best.

I like my collection of labelled HD DVD discs. Not a big fan of taking up my whole bandwitdth with watching a movie. Plus the idea of the possibility of choppness in the movie. Not my cup of tea.

Definitely inline with those though, locked into 'Sony', can't upgrade, a ***** to support. For a free personal PC, maybe, but I would still choose something else if I had to buy.

No, I don't buy the cheap line of anything. If you are one of the few that has had no issues, congrats, but I have a hard time recommending them for anything except the playstation, even then, I push the XBox. :twisted:

Also easier to incapacitate your entire bandwidth and be SOL when you do not have an internet connection and want to watch movies. :)

You'd rather waste the time using a binary NG than actually possess the HD-DVD (which can be transported, used later, etc.,)?

err i have over 4 terrabytes of storage on my home network. backup my existing purchased discs once, watch whenever and whereever in the house I want to without having to hunt for the disc
 
:D i'm just saying hard drive space is as cheap if not cheaper than buying blank hi capacity discs, and in a networked home, its more convenient ;)
