Piston, I use the ".........." to denote beats or pauses in sentences, to accentuate my points. That is hardly bad spelling/grammar, and a sign of a true storyteller.

Dude, I agree. I had some Absynthe straight out of the Czech Republic that knocked me drunk like Captain Kirk, but I never had that wormwood fuzzy-clarity that they speak of. I'm not a big fan of the black licorice taste either. Yuppies can have that, I'll take some Bushmills if I want to get bent. :D
 
I don't mind laziness on the internet such as not capitalising or using words like u or ur. But the fact that some are completely oblivious to the fact that they are using your instead of you're is really concerning. I think with the amount of board reading I do, I am scared that I will probably pick it up soon, just like picking up an accent :o
 
Ok....

We all speak different, and that is a good thing! Way of speech is also a way of expressing one's personality. There are sad cases, but I really don't think anyone in here has the right to talk down on anyone. It's a two way street really. I think the people that try to use words that should be in a thesis or something, are missing the point. Great, you can type good on a computer........This is a health and fitness forum, not an English class. Lighten up!

Put it this way, hypothetically I am looking to hire someone. They submit an application or resume with tons of spelling/grammar mistakes. I would immediately assume they are not the brightest person I have to choose from.

I know it's wrong, because a great many people are very intelligent yet can't seem to spell. The fact of the matter is, a red light goes off when I read that.

Asianbabe pointed something that strikes true. The habit can be picked up. People who visit the site are habitually reading posts over and over, and in the end pick up the bad habit. It is a bad habit.

Last I checked this was Anabolic MINDS. This is about bettering yourself, not only physically. People do come here to learn from (hopefully) intelligent peers. :D

I totally see your point Ubi, and hope people don't try to apply to jobs from Internet slang. The point I was trying to make is maybe some people that "might not be scholars" still will ask a question about a serious issue. Then someone attacks them because they didn't spell every word right.

Fitness, and health have no connection to proper speech.
 
I'm not concerned if people spell words correctly, I'm more concerned with the slang used. I read some post here and elsewhere and really scratch my head and wonder what was going through that said persons mind when he/she wrote it. The english language is out the window; "thug-bonics" seems to be a style that I will never graduate with.

It is not just a matter of semantics, but of presentation of self. A certain degree of thought going into a post just so happens to coincide with a certain level of grammar. For example:

Who deserves to be assisted more? In my opinion, the individual who respectfully presents himself as if he was having a real conversation. It takes no more time to use punctuation, proper grammar, and present your ideas in an intelligible manner as it does slather some garbage on the screen.

If one cannot take the time to use basic speech patterns, than their question/comment/concern must not be entirely imperative. I'm not asking for Uni-level dissertations here. Just do not abbreviate words which need not be abbreviated, etc.,
 
I misspelled something once, and then I developed voluptuous gyno and severe hypogonadism. Bad grammar causes more harm than you think. :lol:

that's it right there...its as if some people want to show off, some just dont really give a sh!t. I really dont care at all even if you arent "proper" (i hate proper people) i think we can still tell if someone is just a total idiot, and that is not solely based on their grammar. Read between the lines.

What is anyone gonna do anyway when they see bad grammar? ignore the person? well thats you call. Im not gonna turn the other cheek just because someone either doesnt pick up english well or just doesnt care. And (yes i started a sentence with and) about the picking it up thing....well if you cant use your brain to figure out when proper english/grammar is needed and when it doesnt matter then i say you have other problems. If you want to use the best possible grammar that you can all the time then do it! I use cant dont and whatever else words, whatever they are called but if im writing something that is important to someone whose opinion matters im still able to use proper grammar. If you cant do the same then its really not my problem.
I know how to spell and id say have a good grasp on grammar and a fairly above average vocabulary (even with growing up in hawaii) so i dont think i have anything to prove on an online forum.

Not that the braindead bodybuilder who has larger testicles than brains stereotype is true, but less bodybuilders are PHDs than non PHDs :) common language explainations are better than excessively scientific to the majority of readers here. There is a HUGE difference in writing to a high school graduate level vs a scientific paper level. Granted the scientific explanations are nice, and references to papers are too, but summaries in high school / first few years of college plain english are better :D

right. Communication is the goal, so if the majority of people here are not college level english students and the like... Then why would you use that sort of grammar? It would just make communication that much harder. While a wide vocabulary range is apprieciated and can be learned from, its just easier to communicate on a more "average" level.

I am not advocating collegiate level writing. Just basic elementary skills. You really should know when to use to, too or two or there, their or they're IMO. I didn't even go to high school guys; I am not a scholar and even my 4th grader writes better than half the posts I see.

Well, I couldn't understand the 'big words' paragraph, because Thesauruses do not teach one context. Almost every word in that paragraph was used improperly. Which is ridiculously ironic, because in attempting to appear intelligent to mock a certain group of people, it made you look stupid.

And you guys are taking it to a certain extreme, which is beside the point. Sounding like an idiot and writing University level dissertations are at two extremes, neither of which is being advocated.

It isn't hard to learn how to speak/write. I have an eight year old nephew who holds conversations with more poise than some people on the net. It coincides with a certain 'I don't give a ****' attitude, which coincides with my 'I don't give a **** about your post' attitude.

That affected me just like one particular persons posts when they get deep, I read the first 3 words then skip to next paragraph :D
 
Most definitely, at times I am over-philosophical. However, that is how my brain is programmed. But, that's not why you do not read my posts.

I'll include more references to beer-case hats, "big cars", hot chicks, and ignorant pseudo-bigot remarks so you can relate. Kay, big guy? Kay!

I'm in CE at LSU and I took a surveying course where the instructor made you read from the Louisiana Law book on surveying. You wouldn't believe it but some people couldn't form one complete sentence. The instructor had to keep stopping to help them pronounce words.

Also, I wish the people here would stop saying words wrong::smite:

da isn't the
stow isn't store
batrees isn't batteries
dat lil baw isn't that little boy

and I could keep going but I think you get the point.

I'm far from using perfect grammar all the time but I can at least hold an intelligent conversation with someone or write a report without sounding like a retard.
 
It actually get to hear teenagers talking slang all the time since I teach high school PE and coach football. The way kids speak is far worse then the grammar they use.
