I am disgusted at some of the turns taken in this thread. It started as a thread about the DEA bust and turned into an outlet for some to spew their ethnocentric, jingoist, and downright uninformed view about other issues and our role as a nation in contributing to both sides of those issues. And before assuming that I am offended because I am of hispanic decent, I will let you know that I am not Mexican nor the product of illegal immigration, in fact I am an American by birth, and proud of it. I do however agree with most that this country seems to be taking a dangerous turn towards extremist alarmist views that will only hinder our progress as a free nation. However, we must make sure not to let apathy get the best of us.
As for the DEA bust, it trully angers me to see this happen. I am a Case manager/Counselor for at risk youth and witness how illegal and legal drugs (alcohol, nicotine) are affecting our youth. I know young women who started shooting heroine long befor having sex and thus sold their virginity in order to get high. I've worked with young people who attempt to overdose on a weekly basis in order to "go out with bang". Thanks to increased production in places like Afghanistan, heroine prices have reached an all time low while the purity increases and the drug becomes more and more accessable to the already depressed and disenfranchised youth.
If the DEA wants to make busts that will trully contribute to improving the lives of 17 year olds in this country, they should stand at the corners of our urban cities and watch the open and public drug sales that my students witness everyday.
