Why did you start lifting?

Curious as to what your reasons were for starting to lift? Was it for aesthetic purposes? To increase overall strength? Perform better at a sport?

As for myself, I started for mostly aesthetic reasons in college, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve increasingly enjoyed the benefits to my physical and mental health.

After suffering from major back pain cause by buldging discs in my upper back I was put on pain killers and a year long physical therapy an chiropractor schedule that honestly made everything worse. The last request from my spinal specialist before surgery was to join the gym and start lifting to strengthen the muscles around my injury. Here I thought that would make my issue worse and aggravate it but after joining the gym and lifting for a few months my pain level and overall health dramatically improved. Within 3 months I was tapered off all pain medication and my quality of life improved drastically. Been going a solid 8 straight years now and still going strong! Can't thank this spinal specialist enough and so happy he was able to avoid putting me under the knife!

I was a fat bastard. Started working out after I quit smoking and got even fatter. I'm nowhere near as strong or as big as others here, but I'm also nowhere near as much a fat bastard as I used to be. I don't do it for anybody but myself.

That’s fantastic that you were able to avoid surgery! My aunt had to have surgery for a herniated disc several months ago, and it’s taken her quite sometime to recover from.

Most definitely brother. I was so thankful my doctor had such a positive impact on my well being. The statistics for folks who have back surgery then have to have corrective or further surgeries in the future is astonishing so avoiding having surgery in the first place was insanely beneficial and I couldn't be more thankful. I truthfully haven't noticed the back pain as bad as it was but maybe 10 times or less for very short periods throughout the last 7 years. Definitely owe it to my doctor and his thinking outside the box.

Started as a way to deal with stress and anxiety in college. Quickly became something I couldn't imagine not doing.

Started exercising due to health getting worse. Quickly noticed mental state improving as well. Now got into lifting.
So the saying that you can exercise the crazy away is basically true.

Just for the ladies, back in the day (1993). Nowadays every workout feels like a psychotherapy session to me.
Working out is deeply embedded in me and as the Mandalorians say: "This is the way".

I have a job that involves lots of sitting, so gym sessions were like a necessary evil. Now it's something I really enjoy doing.

As a teenager I was never into sports but I found I enjoyed lifting weight and was fairly strong, later in life (25) I used it as a way to help lose 85 lbs, now at 61 years old I am fighting Father Time. Over the years it has become a way of life.

Started feeling poorly after a lifetime of never being ill. Hormone imbalance. Dr. recommended weightlifting and it worked.
